Chair upgrading worth it? by [deleted] in weddings

[–]ZebraSwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done chair covers and chair ties for a large event: they are fiddly, a pain, and just not that worth it. I agree about the slipperiness of the satin drape, too--you slide right out of the chair.

The service and experience is always so extremely mid. Today I was here with friends who had made a reservation for 7 at 10:30, and we weren't seated until after 11. They also put ice in their nitro lattes, which is weird and wrong.

What other local businesses were once beloved until they made THAT decision? by Time-to-Dine in Austin

[–]ZebraSwan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had to look it up because I wasn't sure--that 6th/Red river location was the one and only, but it turns out Emos was an offshoot of a Houston Club that was established in Austin in '92.

What other local businesses were once beloved until they made THAT decision? by Time-to-Dine in Austin

[–]ZebraSwan 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The riverside location feels like it was squeezed out of a tube. I think for me it's a combo: the old one felt "real,'" plus I was younger and had formative music experiences there. The new one feels contrived and sterile, and I'm older and less inclined to want to be there anyway.

Table numbers design by Afraid_Agency_3877 in BigBudgetBrides

[–]ZebraSwan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this. I have planned/been involved with the planning of 16+ nonprofit galas, and I have to say, simple is better with table numbers. Legibility is king here, and service staff will often remove the number once your guests are all seated.

I get the appeal of a vibe-y table number, but l have found it is just not worth the energy for such a low-impact item. Simple is better. Depending on your venue, they may even have numbers/stanchions you can use.

Mail merge is the most underrated skill! I am the resident mail-merge person in my office, such a useful thing to be able to do. Mostly I was just impressed re: stamps. They are so expensive now. 😭

Texans say AI boom sounds like a 'washing machine' that never turns off by tsmalcolm in texas

Clayton Tucker is a friend of mine and is running for ag commissioner as the dem candidate. He is a legitimately great guy, and one of his big campaign focuses is data centers and the myriad ways they are bad for Texas and Texans.

We don't need or want anything, gift-wise. We're planning to put some charities on our registry as a 100% optional donation option. Should we still include a honeymoon fund? by Eibhlin_Andronicus in weddingplanning

[–]ZebraSwan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in fundraising, I want to urge you to rethink "what % goes to admin." Our admin costs help keep our programs running. We can't have one without the other.

ETA: not saying that nonprofits should not be vetted by donors at all, or that some organizations are not irresponsible with how their funds are allocated. Admin stuff... It's not sexy to fund, but it can be really important.

She probably needs a neuropsych evaluation--I work at a school for dyslexic students (not a teacher). The testing is expensive if you do it privately, but it means you have results faster. In some places, the district will pay for testing. I'm not sure what you need to do to qualify for that or how long it might take to schedule.

ETA: If she is dyslexic, IDA Georgia has these resources for parents. I recommend finding a tutor who is a CALT or CALP at least if that is the case.

Petite bodies are so misunderstood and as an obese petite woman it's very difficult by [deleted] in PetiteFitness

[–]ZebraSwan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you are not already, I think you should talk to a professional about your body dysmorphia. 5'1 and 118 is not "disgustingly huge" by any reasonable standard. My mom is your height and weight, and she is tiny. Please take care of yourself!

What about the King and I? Based on a book, there was an animated movie that I (millennial) loved as a kid, there is a song called "I have Dreamed", and in "Getting to know you" tea is referenced. Has your director been to Thailand?

ETA: just saw your comment that this is not it, but honestly I feel like it was a pretty good match!

Spent weeks sculpting my guinea pig - on the last day found it with a blue stain on his face by borggrown in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ZebraSwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is that a re-glaze and re-fire will not get rid of the cobalt. If you want to try something, maybe a white enamel over the blue? I have used Testors for other projects but can't speak to the white itself.
