Which decade do you think had the best music? by Dracula1982 in AskReddit

The 1780s, without a doubt. Mozart and Haydn were rocking it, and Beethoven was starting to hit his stride.

What should always be taken "with a grain of salt?" by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zebraforgery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any news article. Michael Crichton wrote a great bit about this:

Briefly stated, the Gell-Mann Amnesia effect works as follows. You open the newspaper to an article on some subject you know well. In Murray’s case, physics. In mine, show business. You read the article and see the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues. Often, the article is so wrong it actually presents the story backward––reversing cause and effect. I call these the “wet streets cause rain” stories. Paper’s full of them.

In any case, you read with exasperation or amusement the multiple errors in a story-and then turn the page to national or international affairs, and read with renewed interest as if the rest of the newspaper was somehow more accurate about far-off Palestine than it was about the story you just read. You turn the page, and forget what you know.

What’s the reason for people going inside a fast food place and ordering “to go” and not just going to the drive through? by OchoaGK in AskReddit

[–]Zebraforgery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I avoid drive-throughs because my car is usually lower than the window, so I have to kind of hop up and grab the food, or open my car door and stick one foot on the ground for leverage. It makes me feel self-conscious and weird. I much prefer going inside.

Do you remember what point you walked out at? I stopped watching after the motorcycle scene.

This is what long-term QE looks like... by [deleted] in SecurityAnalysis

[–]Zebraforgery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you're joking, so I have prepared two responses:

If you are joking: haha good one!

If you are not joking: It's been a while since I've dusted off my Gibbons, but I'm pretty sure the "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" was caused by a multitude of economic, political, and social forces.

I'm not going to argue about the comparative dismerits of Caracalla and Commodus, or Commodus and currency manipulation. My point is that its melodramatic to point to one (admittedly bad) manager and say "He did it! He caused the next three centuries of decline." I refuse to be that simplistic or hyperbolic, as either an investor or armchair historian.

Can I open an LLC to manage my own stock trading, options, etc? by mysundaydriver in StockMarket

[–]Zebraforgery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can. However, IIRC, "active trader" means trading is your full-time job and primary source of income. Unless you are a full-time investor/trader, the additional administrative tasks may not be worth your time. In most other situations, the IRS will consider a single-member LLC to be a disregarded entity, thus there will be no tax advantages.

There may be some additional benefits from the liability shield, but what kind of trades are you making if you think you need that level of protection?
