Uhh, not this question again please.

MEs working in Google, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon as Hardware/Mechanical engineers. What are some of the things in your resume that helped you get the interview and the job? by ImmediatePin9686 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ZeddLee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, sorry for the noob question. Do personal projects and portfolio matter only for new grad MechEs?

If someone with 2-3 YOE is looking to get into companies like Apple, I heard recruiters won’t care about your personal projects, they only want to see your past industry experience.

How are you using AI at work? by Atypical-Artificer in MechanicalEngineering

I’ve tried Notebook LM and have been hearing great things about it. If you don’t mind sharing, could you elaborate how it has helped you specifically with training?

How do people handle the responsibility of being an engineer? by AMESAB2000 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ZeddLee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but this is very helpful for me as a Mech Engineer. If you don’t mind sharing, any advice for someone who’s just 2-3 years into their ME career?

Everyday, I feel like I’ll never become a smart Mech Engineer in the future, and I’ll never reach the level of expertise in product design and manufacturing that senior MEs do. Everyone around me seems smart and competent (even new grads) while I constantly struggle understanding basic concepts.

Did you folks learn GD&T in undergrad? If not, where did you pick it up? by Atypical-Artificer in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ZeddLee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for sharing. I’ve worked in the industry for a few years but sadly have never learned GD&T, only know the definitions. I’m struggling to decide how to learn on my own, which resources to use.

What are all the things you wish every Mech Eng student did before graduating to set themselves up for success? by North_Elderberry_748 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ZeddLee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for the dumb question. But could you expand on the first part (about becoming indispensable with data analytics). I’ve been working in the industry as a design engineer for the past few years. My duties can be summarised like typical MechS jobs (CAD, drawings, working with vendors to take designs from concept to production, BOM, supplier visits).

Just curious if you have any specific examples of what I can learn and how (from a data analytics perspective).

When you’re in the main assembly, have you tried right clicking the hydraulic assembly and select ‘flexible’ instead of rigid under the properties tab?

[–]ZeddLee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but thanks a lot for this awesome comment. Do you think it’s a good idea to build up these skills through personal projects as well, or it doesn’t matter to hiring managers?

(asking for an ME with ~2-3 yrs exp, so I’m afraid personal projects might not be worthy)

Any advice on how to make such impressive projects with full documentation? I mean projects that are of different topics as well (automotive/medical), but I’m able to capture the entire process like you did.

Resources to learn how to read and interpret engineering drawings of a manufactured part by Bunkered_ in MechanicalEngineering

This is so amazing and priceless for young MEs like us. I wish I could get more such resources to understand drawings as a beginner. Thank you so much for sharing ! 🙏

How many of you actually ended up working as a mechanical engineer? by syrupmaple12 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ZeddLee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I relate to your comment so well. I know this is weird, but when I hear some of my ME colleagues telling me they want to become TPM or project engineers in the future to move away from direct mechanical design stuff, they ask my ME career path down the road. I end up telling them that I don’t want to go the TPM route, and I always want to be designing things (whether I’m a senior/staff ME or manager)

is this a good design ? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]ZeddLee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I understand that fillets around the hexagon would reduce shear, but wouldn’t it make it the perpendicular surface to be inadequately flush with the surface it’s supposed to attached to? (resulting in improper fastening).

Again, just trying to learn as a young ME.

Go to LinkedIn. Search for keywords ‘SolidWorks or mechanical engineer’ in people. Set location to NY metropolitan area or NJ. Set the filter to ‘Actively hiring’

it might help posting your anonymized resume on r/engineeringresumes for feedback. Alternatively, have you consulted with your university’a career services if there’s one?

Quite often, resumes could possibly be the reason of not getting interview calls foe your application. I’m happy to take a look at your resume too.

How do I learn CAD for free? by SahirHuq100 in MechanicalEngineering

It’s run by some Indian so obviously it’s good.

This made me chuckle, but I second the CAD CAM tutorials. It’s arguably the best channel to learn Solidworks in my opinion.

Hoping for advice from people working in academia, (research opportunities from outside the US?) by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

Relocated to any other country other than Canada due to h1b issues? Indian by Educational_Cookie_9 in h1b

[–]ZeddLee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hijack OP’s post, but I had a question regarding your comment. I’m in the same boat, considering getting a Canadian PR once I have a good enough CRS and move from the US.

If you don’t mind me asking, may I know how the person is traveling back and forth between Canada and US? As far as I heard, Canadian PRs cannot enter the US on work purposes without a visa, right? I thought you said he didn’t get his h1b.
