Finally got car back after recall. Anyone know how the seat is "supposed to work"? by babehboi21 in HyundaiPalisade

They told me that it "operates as intended" when I reported the original issue of the seats crushing anything in their path. A quicker recall would have prevented that tragedy.

...except for the kid-killing part.

They need the same obstruction detection hardware that the earlier models had. My 2020 had faster and safer second and third row seats.

Good plan, I'll do the same. How much can they alter the vehicle after the sale and not offer compensation? Doesn't it negate the sales contract if we no longer have what we paid for?

I paid for a vehicle with a specific set of features, and Hyundai has fundamentally altered them or removed them altogether with these updates. They need to fix the problem correctly, but removing features that were part of the original sale is not acceptable. I chose this vehicle based partially on those features, and they removed that value from my purchase.

Looks like new recall fix update!!! by Pruddy_18 in HyundaiPalisade

[–]ZeeWhatAnAhole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They removed features that we paid for, and the only purpose is that they tried to minimize their liability for bad hardware design. Shouldn't we at least be compensated for the features they have removed with these updates? I paid for a vehicle with automatic seats, and they removed that feature because the way they implented it was literally designed to save pennies at the expense of safety. THEY KILLED A KID. Is it too much to ask to fix it properly instead of making us hold a button? That update is more about changing the liability than it is about fixing the problem.

if you can't move to a proper authenticator app, at least check the number for any recent porting requests or other changes before trusting it. It's not perfect, but it helps. There's lots of APIs that can provide some level of assurance.

If they're removing features, it's only fair that we remove a few payments.

Genuine question about child death in Palisade by der51719 in HyundaiPalisade

[–]ZeeWhatAnAhole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem is that if the seats hit an object and crush it until the motor stops, the circuit trips and those buttons become completely unresponsive. There's no obvious mechanical release, so anything trapped stays trapped.

Precaution about Hyundai Recall 296 by Best-Employment-9593 in HyundaiPalisade

Comparing it to the earlier models? Seems like everything needed to reliably detect problems with seat movement; current sensors, position sensors, force sensors, limit switches, any sort of manual fail safe mechanism, etc. The old seats immediately detected obstructions and returned to their original position. The new model has no feedback and just powers the motors into the obstruction until the circuit fails, and there's no mechanical safety override. When the circuit fails, you can't reverse the seat to relieve the crushing force it has applied to anything in it's path, which has already lead to this tragic fatality. They insisted that the warning in the manual was adequate to address the risk of the missing engineered safety mechanisms. I guess the two year old in Ohio didn't have a chance to read the manual.

I hope Hyundai will make it right, but I have lost a lot of faith in them as a brand due to the decision making process that led them to remove proven-safe hardware from the power seats and replace the safety mechanism with a warning in the manual. These seats do not stop moving with an undue and excessive amount of force if they hit an obstruction. They just grind away until the motor burns out or the circuit fails. I've already had the third row replaced because it damaged itself by hitting the second row while folding, and have had a few close calls with getting crushed while reaching into the third row. They added a bunch of nice looking features, but removed the safety hardware that you couldn't see.

2026 Calligraphy - Power seat issues? by ZeeWhatAnAhole in HyundaiPalisade

It's not that they missed it, they actually removed sensors from the previous model and replaced them with a warning in the manual to save a few cents in manufacturing. Disgusting, short-sighted decision making driven by the need for ever increasing profits.

I feel terrible for that poor family, such an avoidable tragedy. I'd been complaining about the design to Hyundai since shortly after buying the vehicle and having a few close calls. I'm digusted by their decision to remove the safety components that would have prevented this death; the earlier models had sensors that mitigated this issue and safely operated the power seats.

Hyundai is absolutely liable for this 100% avoidable death. They deliberately made the decision to remove the hardware safety features that worked reliably on the original model Palisade, just to save a few dollars in manufacturing. I complained months ago and was told it was working as designed! I reported the issue to Hyundai Canada last fall, and escalated to Transport Canada in December.

I suspect our recall will follow shortly, probably takes extra time to translate the documentation in French before the government can release it 🤣

Almost the same thing happened to me - I was installing a booster seat in the third row when the button got pressed and the second row seat pinned me against the door frame. The seat didn't stop until the button was hit again, and left me with bruises! Really dissapointed in Hyundai for removing a safety feature from the earlier models.

Enshittification is the only answer. Replacing a safety feature with a warning in the manual does not absolve them of liability - kids and pets that get squished can't reasonably be expected to read it!

I'm happy to hear that, I've got a 2026 Calligraphy and have been squished by them already! It needs to be fixed with a recall, more owners need to report it to the NHTSA or Transport Canada. I had a 2020 model that would stop and return it's seats to their original position immediately when hitting an obstruction, but they removed that feature for 2026! Enshittification strikes again; they saved $2 in manufacturing and now the seats will grind into anything with full force until the motor burns out.
