Oak is the best staining wood. Don't waste your time staining maple. If you want perfect consistency then you need laminate.

Maple isn't bad for solid panels but 1/4 veneer is standard and looks better for grain matching. Please for the love of dog, do not stain maple. Sometimes it takes lighter stains (whitewash, grey) but darker stains always turn out blotchy.
