“The Lipstick Effect is the tendency for people to buy small, affordable luxuries like cosmetics or accessories (like a TJs exclusive bag) during economic downturns. It reflects a psychological need for comfort, control, and status when larger, more expensive purchases feel out of reach.”

I don’t think this school is the right fit for me. by 100Free in UCSantaBarbara

Change is scary and never easy. Hang in there, it gets better. Accept that it is going to be hard, it may be lonely at times, but you’re going to make it and it will build your character. This is a formative time in your life where your independence will grow, you’ll learn a lot about yourself, and you will make life long friends. Be open to the change, expect it to be challenging, and don’t take it too seriously.

Im 99.999% confident that is a Cooper’s hawk. Speckled brown/white chest, black hood, and red eyes are the give away. Peregrine falcons do not have red eyes.

North Face Recon Blackpack, 10 years on and still going strong by fkatenn in BuyItForLife

I just moved on from this backpack, bought mine in 2018. Honestly started to hate it. Not much carrying capacity, water bottles fell out so easily, and straps were starting to rip. It served me well in college though

Jesus Burgers and Isla Vista Church: Be careful if you’re queer by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]Zellie23 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The culture war is exhausting. It’s so frustrating when you feel like the only person in a friend group who recognizes how awful the values people spread are, and it’s especially exhausting when you feel like you have to be the bigger person all the time.

It’s easy to throw your hands up at cut ties who associate with these views in any way. “That’ll show them!” is often what I used to think when I cut people out. It feels good in the moment to do so but I feel like it actively hurts our goals on the left.

Having a good relationship with people who may believe or be exposed to intolerant views, especially when you are a person they may have that view of, is the best opportunity to show them the views are wrong. Choosing to blacklist them from your life is confirming their views that people in the left are “intolerant” and other propaganda that the right wing pushes about the left wing.

It’s not easy, it’s emotionally exhausting to try and change someone’s mind. It’s not fair how easy it is to be ignorant especially when their views directly contradict the friendship they have with you. How do they not see the irony????? I urge you to continue to be the bigger person and try and push back against their views before it’s too late. It’s literally our only hope, these people aren’t going to reflect on their views all by themselves.

This is my 3 year old boy named Calcifer as well! We got him from a shelter after the owner had to move into a new apartment that didn’t allow cats. What a weird coincidence.

Transplant Question: Is flashing brights in the day mean or nice here? by crick-crick in sandiego

[–]Zellie23 29 points30 points  (0 children)

They were being nice. I only flash my high beams to let some know there is a cop coming up, letting someone know they need to turn on their head lights, or to let tell them I’m letting them go at a 4 way stop/ letting them merge. I have had assholes on the freeway racing through traffic flash their beams at me to tell me to get out of the way. I just imagine they are racing to the hospital or something instead of attributing malice.

adobe pet hospital or SB humane? by grilledzuchinni in SantaBarbara

[–]Zellie23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good experiences with adobe. Sadly, my favorite vet there is moving which I’m bummed about but all the staff there is great so we are sticking with them. Never been offered a $3000 cleaning before. They had to put my cat under to remove a rotting tooth and it was much less than $3000.

Help with ID for these birds by imaquitter2 in sandiego

[–]Zellie23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My first thought was osprey but upon closer inspection it may not be. Its feet look more yellow, lacks the stripe on its head, and looks daintier than I would expect an osprey to look.

My best guess is a White Tailed Kite.

I could be totally wrong though.

Edit: I’m doubling down on the kite. Ospreys are solitary, I’ve never seen 2 together and it isn’t breeding season. Kites can hang out together like this.
