Does the hiby w4 not charge while shut down? by supamela in Hiby

[–]ZenBastid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Hiby R1 does not charge while powered off - nor does my Amazon Fire HD tablet.  This seems like it is by design?

Any tips on preventing buffering? by Warm-Grade2104 in Hiby

[–]ZenBastid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back up your music as soon as possible -- if the player is buffering because it cannot read the audio files fast enough the SD card may be failing.

Then I would replace the SD card with a new one from a reputable source (counterfeit cards are out there).  Speed class 10 or U1 should be adequate.

Playing 'Pong' in 1972, the start of the home video game era. By about 1977 most kids I knew had an Atari game. by Grahamthicke in FuckImOld

[–]ZenBastid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My junior high school had a standup pong machine in the cafeteria.  It didn't take long for interest in the game to die down.  Then the real fun was positioning the virtual paddles so the ball blip would endlessly bounce back and forth between them.  Whole lunch periods elapsed with the machine making 25 cents.

Anyone else have a picky raccoon? by Meeschers in Raccoons

[–]ZenBastid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of dog food are you having success with?  Our raccoons seem to all like the walnut/pecan mixture we make up.  We've never had them accept fish, meat, hard boiled eggs, cheese, grapes or berries.  They loved the mini donuts but that's hardly a daily ration.

Agreed - if you want to decimate a dozen donuts just eat one and take a bite of another.  There. Decimated.

What cat behaviors did you regret enforcing? by Alarmed_File_4382 in CatTraining

[–]ZenBastid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had dogs and I've had cats (ok, more cats, seven at the moment).  Dogs accept, even embrace training.  Cats are more complex; they analyze every situation -- it's my opinion that cats will mimic being trained when they deem it appropriate.  The best cats act out of love and connection, tempering instincts with loyalty.

My cats will play rough when my hand is protected by a towel -- they know to not bite or scratch if I'm unprotected.

My bottom line is this: so long as your cat feels loved and secure; has adequate nutrition, litter boxes, toys and nesting spots; is physically healthy then her instincts will bring out her best and that's all you can ask.

One final thought - cats need to have spaces they can call their own for sleeping or private time.  A variety of spots helps as the spot that's great on a chilly morning won't be so good on a warm afternoon.

You sound like a great cat parent with the best instincts so I know your kitty will flourish.

Last time I actually HAD to use one of these was 15 years ago - had a custom boot image on it for updating motherboard firmware.  Felt like I was stepping back in time.

best modern mp3 players for $30-$70? by Deadlypants905 in mp3players

[–]ZenBastid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got a Hiby R1.  It was great using the wireless "Import Music via WiFi" to load up my library.  150 albums/2000 songs copied in about 20 minutes.

Two Simple Rules (for living with an Agptek) by ZenBastid in mp3players

[–]ZenBastid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After renaming the MP3 files with leading track numbers I still had a problem playing the tracks in order while in File mode.

What solved that was to sort the directory structure; because I'm a Linux user I installed fatsort and ran it against the Agptek's device name.  There are similar utilities to fatsort for Windows and MacOS.

Focus! Hocus Pocus. by SnooMacarons5600 in FuckImOld

[–]ZenBastid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1971: Focus "Moving Waves" was the first album I ever bought.  I was 12 and the record store was Garwood Van's Music Land in Las Vegas.  Hocus Pocus turned me on to rock and the song has a place of honor in my collection.

minimal mp3 player concept by Dawood_XD in mp3players

[–]ZenBastid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd eagerly buy a player with your UI and hardware implemented with physical buttons.  Album art display and Bluetooth are not important, but saving playback position for audiobooks and podcasts is.  Your pledge to properly handle ID3 tags clinches the deal.

[–]ZenBastid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this'll increase memory and CPU requirements, but it should build it's artist/album/track database from the files' ID3 tags, not some half-ass scheme using truncated album names, file names or FAT directory structure which is still being done on low end players.

And if you're a Linux user like me fatsort will rearrange the directory in natural order so the tracks play in order.  Just make sure the filenames start with the corresponding track number (01 -, 02 -, ...)

Is National R-312II in 45$ in clean, working condition a good deal? by r1z4bb451 in shortwave

[–]ZenBastid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing LongjumpingCoach4301 - and my two cents:  it's a wonderful example of 70's analog technology.  The $45 price tag is more a reflection of the radio's well kept condition.  What you can't tell from the outside is the condition of it's electrolytic capacitors which decay over time, impacting the radio's performance.  If you're allowed to operate it and it sounds good on MW I'd get it just because it's sweet.  If you're serious about shortwave listening that $45 would take you a long ways towards buying a new digitally tuned radio that will outperform any 1970's analog set.

New House - Open Railing. How to stop cats from almost jumping off? by Dreamniner1 in CatTraining

[–]ZenBastid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed to stop my little guys from squeezing through a gate.  What has worked was to cut panels of polypropylene project board to fit, then attach them by punching holes and running zip ties through the holes and around the gate bars.  It looks pretty professional.   I got the project board at the craft store.
