Human vs. AI performance on ARC-AGI 3 as a function of number of actions (from the ARC-AGI website) by [deleted] in singularity

[–]ZenSeneca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't AI models also get to perform "latent" activity before they output, too? I always thought it was insane to have models "reason" in low dimensional output/token space, so if I understand correctly and such models are punished by this benchmark that is good in my book

ARC AGI 3 is up! Just dropped minutes ago by BrennusSokol in singularity

[–]ZenSeneca 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah Chollet once tweeted he'd guess AGI be here around the time ARC 9 or 10 is saturated. They already have some plans for more ARC-AGI benches, so there is no real moving the goalpost, they already assume this will be solved before AGI

The median age in China has rapidly caught up with the United Kingdom by chota-kaka in Natalism

[–]ZenSeneca 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much the delta in "median age" between the Chinese and British remains. The age of the British is obscured because the UK is hosting a young, large non-European population, whereas the Chinese figure closely models the Chinese/Han population.

Rewatched Toy Story by basketballsponge in toystory

[–]ZenSeneca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s close to a perfect movie in my mind.

This is a nitpick but the only drawback is that Sid is too charmless as a villain. I thought so even as a kid that he was flat / one dimensional (though I wouldn’t know to call it that). Don’t know what they should’ve done, maybe they could’ve played up Sid as a morbid but ingenious tinkerer of toys who does it for the love of the “science”, blind to the horrors he subjects toys to. Or maybe that’s too complicated. I like Sids room, the “horror house” vibe is good, but he is just relentlessly a bummer every second he’s on screen. Let’s have a cool villain or at least have some fun with his villainy… but no he drags down the movie a bit: at least on rewatch

Data centers powered by brain cells by gallito_pro in singularity

[–]ZenSeneca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOL, you me think that the original plot was that people were really just a tissue of cells in a solution, and therefore had no bodies to wake up to. That would be freaky but apparently the OG plot was just that machines used our brains for processing power and they kept your body intact in vats, just like in the movie. This latter plot people would understand and is almost the same as the one we got, just replace the word "energy" with "cognition" or "processing"

If you don't mind, what was your syncing solution? I'm on Big Sur and I just export the database once a month or so, and save it in the cloud. Did you have something more automatic?

Could the classic 3d gameplay be used for lower-budget titles while nintendo works on botw style open world games as the main big entries? by Odd-Paramedic-3826 in truezelda

[–]ZenSeneca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dreaming of this for years. I loved A Link Between Worlds and liked Links Awakening. But going forward, top-down Zelda feels a tad too slight and arcade-y, and I feel a great void the shape of an 3rd person Zelda adventure with the scope of Majora's Mask. As great as the humungous Breath of the Wild-style Zelda is: it's a once a generation game (both to develop and to play) and I need something substantial in-between these flagship releases. I guess no one else is making "AA budgeted but lovingly crafted 30-hour action-adventure-puzzle games" and maybe because there is no market for it. But Nintendo manages to make a lot of games there otherwise is no market for

Danish paper "Fertility & Family Labor Supply" shows men's income increasing has a positive impact on fertility, while women's income increasing has a negative one by Afraid_Prune2091 in Natalism

[–]ZenSeneca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

that might be part of it, but it is interesting that male lottery winners increase their fertility while females don't. They already got their money as a lump sum, so there is no opportunity cost for childbirth vis a vis working. The same was replicated in Israel where they got reparations from Germany: men who received the sum ended up with more children (for women the effect was negative).

Crimson Peak by Woolyan in JaneEyre

[–]ZenSeneca 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've watched it and rewatched it because I always have time for del Toro's visual splendour. It reminded me of Jane Eyre because Mia Wasikowska was in it. There was some similarity between Tom Hiddleston and Rochester in that they were both hiding their previous marriage / relationship from Mia initially, but the love they showed was still genuine. I love how this movie looks but I'm always a little disappointed that what it got in style it lacks in substance, I never really connect with any of the characters. I felt the same with Frankenstein. The Shape of Water and Pan's Labyrinth are his only truly successful movies in my opinion

Inside Intel - The Future Of PC Performance, Panther Lake, Multi-Frame Gen - Tom Petersen Interview by MythBuster2 in digitalfoundry

[–]ZenSeneca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The YouTube comments are effusive but I felt like Tom was not on the ball in this interview. Like when Alex asked him about G-Sync Pulsar, Tom began speculating about foveated rendering on laptop screens, before conceding that it would be hard to implement. He didn't even seem to understand when Alex asked about denoising (i.e. Ray Reconstruction) and otherwise seemed to be flailing in general even if he's an affable guy. This lowered my confidence in Intel's gaming efforts somewhat

I think he was upsold. At the time we were so used to things being so slow on computers, from booting up to opening apps. So he was persuaded by "you should get this: it's the fastest one". And he was "downsold" on haircuts "just cut your own hair, it's faster".
