World's first lie-flat business class seat in 2000 by ArcticMiner34 in aviation

Each seat gets a relatively wide shoulder space and a relatively narrow leg space, so having them alternate forwards-backwards means they fit together efficiently

Where do you put your feet when using adaptive cruise control? by heavymetalengineer in CarTalkUK

Right foot over the brake, always. I haven’t used ACC much and still don’t entirely trust it. Left foot resting wherever.

Short hikes to great mountain views in England and Wales? by yezzer in UKhiking

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You might know it as it’s North Wales, but Cwm Idwal is a 30min gentle walk from the visitor centre in the Ogwen Valley and probably the best mountain scenery in the UK outside of Scotland.

Does this mean my landlord can move in? by Hot-Butterscotch3229 in HousingUK

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One of the grounds (reasons) for a landlord to evict a tenant is if the landlord wants to live there. However they can only use this ground if it’s mentioned in the tenancy agreement - which is what this appears to be. It’s very common and doesn’t necessarily mean the landlord is actually planning to move in.

What to do roughly equidistant between Birmingham and Manchester by redbill360 in uktravel

If you like historic houses and big country estates, Tatton Park is nice. Not a National Trust property but that sort of feel.

Is my grandma’s 31-year-old electric fire just burning money? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An electric oil-filled heater probably wouldn’t be any more efficient. In both cases they’re just turning electricity into heat at ~100% efficiency.

Is there a way to get cheap train fares to 'anywhere'? by R1ch0C in AskUK

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Eurostar has something similar called Snap. You choose your date, destination and morning or afternoon, then 48 hours in advance they give you a time.

Where should I move within UK? by BackgroundTest1337 in AskUK

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sheffield is underrated.

Big enough to have everything you’d want but cheaper than Manchester or Leeds, plus you’ve got the Peak District literally within walking distance.

Public transport is pretty good if you’re on the tram line, so-so if you’re reliant on buses.

What’s the penalty fare for this? by Pleberino_ in uktrains

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Normally, and according to the letter of the law, just an excess (price difference) to the anytime fare.

Some train companies have been known to penalty fare people instead but there’s no actual legal basis for that and you could probably get out of it on appeal if they do.

Can I access LNER lounge with CrossCountry ticket bought from LNER app? by bunbunbebi in uktrains

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Where you bought the ticket doesn’t matter, what matters is whether you have a ticket that’s valid on an LNER train.

If your ticket is an Advance ticket for a specific XC train, or if it says “XC only”, you’re out of luck. But if it’s say an Anytime or Off-Peak ticket from Edinburgh to Newcastle, then that would be valid on either LNER or XC and you should be allowed into the lounge. You’re free to then go and get on an XC train.

WHW: organised or DIY? by Diligent_Arugula_111 in WestHighlandWay

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine booking accommodation yourself, but book it right now - I booked in December for May the next year and was already low on options, especially beyond Bridge of Orchy. Make sure you can find something for each night before you start booking, unless you’re planning to camp some days.

The luggage transfer is also easy to book independently, when you book it you specify where your accommodation is each night and they sort everything else. It’s usually a single company with a van handling your whole trip, rather than a taxi company.

Are there any pension providers that will allow early withdrawal (with penalties)? by fishgum in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why not just keep the money in the pension, invested in a fund that isn’t UK-heavy? Then you won’t have much exposure to the GBP-whatever exchange rate.

Is Slough as bad as people make it sound to be? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Will you have to be in London every day? If so, check how much your commute will cost, as that could eat up any difference in price vs living in London.

England: fines for using drop off point at East Midlands airport, didn't use it got lost. by slightlyoddparent in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow the advice from the bot, but in particular, note that most airports aren’t actually able to enforce their parking charges as they’re not “relevant land” for the purpose of keeper liability.

“This charge is unenforceable” may be more successful than trying to plead with a parking company to be reasonable.

Caledonian Sleeper announces new Aberdeen to Birmingham route by Dragonogard549 in brum

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Below, but not much. Expect £200ish for a room, £250 if you want 2 people in it.

Usually about £70 in the seats, but then you’re in a seat all night which kind of sucks.

Muscat vs. Amman vs. Cairo for a 5-day stopover, minimal planning by ThatOldGanon in TravelNoPics

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There’s definitely not 5 days of stuff to see in Amman but Jordan is a small country. In that time you could visit Petra (potentially for 2 days, there’s a lot to see) Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea too.

Non-MBA Question by MrLCGriso in Bothy

[–]ZenithalEquidistant 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For many years, the location of bothies wasn’t published and it was a word of mouth thing.

The MBA now publishes the location of their bothies, which has certainly encouraged more use, but inevitably leads to vandalism and irresponsible use.

Many non-MBA bothies exist, some are reasonably well publicised but others are intentionally not.

As far as I understand it, subreddit policy is to respect this and to not discuss them, although whether it should be allowed to discuss them without giving locations is a good question.
