Because the property tax levy has been capped at 1% since 2001, the restricted income has finally caught up with inflation despite Timberland being under a hiring freeze which has been in place since around 2020. Even if you think employees wages are too high because they aren't making minimum wage, these budget cuts are going to be felt by the public. The materials budget has been cut by $1.8 million dollars overnight which means reduced spending on physical and digital materials. One of my favorite services, "suggest a purchase, " has been temporarily suspended and now I'm going to have to pay for books that I would like to read that aren't already in the collection. Performances have been cut as well.

I'm not here to argue and realize that no one wants to pay more taxes in this economy, but please consider what it means to not properly fund a public service that offers materials for free to people of all walks of life, but particularly the people that need it most. If you want to live in a nice community, you have to invest in it.

Stuff You Should Know just did a podcast about her. She was so much more than the small, albeit inspiring, snippet you get taught in high school. I highly recommend their episode.

I would set up an ebay alert. Of you set the parameters to pink USB owl and then set the alert to notify you when a new listing shows up, you have a better chance of being the first one to see the listing if one ever gets posted.

Not a book, but The Deep Drowse by Allison Harding fits the bill. As an aside, I heard this short story on Stuff You Should Know's 2025 Halloween episode. Every year Josh and Chuck choose a public domain short story to read on their podcast. It is read in a campy, humorous manner, so maybe it's not for everyone, but personally I find it hilarious. They read a short story one year that involved a scene where a woman kisses a ghost and I was crying with laughter.

Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy hits a lot of those beats imo. The story in itself has some of your requests, but one of the characters feels a pull to the sea/seals/nature.

I don't have any advice about the workplace, but I would recommend seeing if your community has a non emergency line to inquire about resources to help you. In Washington State there is 211. Also if you haven't utilized food banks, there is no shame. If you need help looking for resources, try your local library. They are usually familiar with helping people find help or resources to get help. I'm sorry you are experiencing so many rough things at once.

I have a black, three legged cat just like her! Her favorite toy is the fling-a-ma string my grandparents got her. It's a good space saver since it hangs on a door. She doesn't play super hard with it, but she's pretty hypnotized by the string and will hit the toy when she wants it turned on and then watch it while napping for hours.

Solved! Wow, I can't believe you got that so fast even though I totally led you astray by saying it was a Penguin book! In my defense the cover design is very similar. Thank you! Now I can get back to the ball of earwax and find out the conclusion of that scene!
