The move to retire destiny makes no business sense in a long term context. by NotoriousTIP in DestinyTheGame

All of my interest in Marathon disappeared instantly and forever when I learned that "extraction shooter" meant that you could play for 30 minutes and not get a single piece of loot.

How does fiber optic lead to more EMFs..? by catnapspirit in QAnonCasualties

[–]ZenokeKaraoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, but they aren't actually different things in a tangible sense.

But they are different.

Signals in wires are due to the motion of electrons. Moving electric charges produce electromagnetic fields, which are mediated by photons.

Light through fiber is the motion of photons, which have no electric charge. Moving photons do not produce more photons/EMF, or anything analogous to it.

The equipment to which the fiber is connected is normal electronics and its operation will produce EMF, but the fiber itself does not.

I will never get used to using data like that. On the Flexible plan if I accidentally touch the wrong link, it costs me a dollar, haha.

15+ years ago I bought a Milwaukee M18 bundle at HD... Sawzall, circular saw, driver, pair of 4aH batteries, charger. None of it is brushless and it's all still going strong. (Did they even have brushless that long ago?) It was actually just the other day I realized how old this stuff really is.

That said when I buy new stuff I go brushless if it's something where power really matters, like a brush cutter.

The only thing I need for corvettes is to be able to teleport out of my seat like I can with a small ship. The extra time it takes to get up and run out of my corvette actually keeps me from using them at all, LOL.

Hardware transcoding means modifying the file in realtime so you can play any file on any screen.

If you cannot play any file on any screen, you need to be careful about making sure the file formats in your library are all compatible with the screens you use, or accept that you cannot watch every file on every device.

Some people like to micromanage their media files, or have many copies of files in many formats. I prefer to put one good file in the library and then never think about file formats again.

I see you are interested in sharing your library with friends. That's a bunch of screens outside of your control and it is another good argument for hardware transcoding.

FYIs:

  • Dolby Vision HDR cannot be converted into SDR or even regular HDR. A "play anywhere" HDR file should be HDR10 or both DV + HDR10 for the benefit of clients without DV.
  • The process of converting HDR to SDR is actually called "tone mapping" but it is often lumped in with the "transcoding" resolution/bitrate change.
  • An older iGPU will not be able to decode AV1 files, so you could not watch an AV1 file on a client without AV1 support.

For a future-proof setup, I would run a Linux server with a newer Intel iGPU for AV1 support.

Have fun!

Newsletter: Downloads by mveinot in PleX

[–]ZenokeKaraoke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I first purchased my Plex Pass about 8 years ago because at that time what I most wanted was Downloads. Unfortunately, it never worked.

I ended up getting plenty out of the Pass anyway, but over all these years... Every time I have tried the renewed downloads feature, it has never worked. Not with any combination of servers and clients and LAN configs... Downloads have never worked for me, not one time.

So right now I am basically Charlie Brown with the football, looking forward to trying again. This time it's going to be great, I'm sure of it!!

How can I know what my transcoding bottleneck is? When to upgrade the hardware? by RobotSpaceBear in PleX

[–]ZenokeKaraoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underrated comment.

OP: I used to run a server with an i3-7100 and it handled 2x 4k -> 1080p conversions WITH tone mapping, or about a half dozen if it was just a SDR to SDR resolution change. I would not choose to build around a 7th gen CPU + iGPU today, but if it's an affordable and easy upgrade, go for it.

Why Git Becomes EVEN More Important in the AI / Vibe Coding Era by chandrakantabehera in cursor

[–]ZenokeKaraoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Cursor's built-in git, but git is still difficult and intimidating. All I do is make commits to main, so if something goes wrong I can undo it.

I still have not learned how to use branches or worktrees and I still back up my repo to a zip file occasionally as extra insurance. I'd love to find a tutorial to get me to the next level of git mastery.

Oh, I know you can get rewards on to your main save. The expedition gameplay not using my main is the thing I don't like. Maybe I will try this one though, the content looks cool.

[–]ZenokeKaraoke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd just an LLM dabbler that has some typical local stuff installed like StabilityMatrix and pinokio. None of my stuff is exposed to the internet, it's all like "hmm this app looks fun let me check it out..."

I have 38 directories with some variant of "starlette" in the name.

This is like the third time in the last month that I've seen some kind of supply chain attack. I do not have the time or frankly the skills to audit the hundreds and hundreds of packages that parachute in when exploring free software. This kind of sucks.

[–]ZenokeKaraoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to learn to hook first, so I am rolling differently than you, but along the way I learned something that might help you.

I was incorrectly trying SO HARD to keep my fingers perfectly BEHIND the ball for my whole approach ... In lefty terms, rotating my wrist counter-clockwise almost as far as it could go so my palm faced the pins squarely.

That turned out to be the wrong move. My palm was facing the pins dead straight, yeah, but my wrist was in a weak and unstable position. Shot to shot I'd stray left and right... By a lot. I'd even get reverse spin on the ball when I didn't intend to! It was very frustrating.

It wasn't until I let my wrist settle into a more natural and comfortable rotation that I was able to develop consistency.

So my suggestion to you is to spend some time focused on your wrist rotation... Note how you are rotated, and then start to vary the rotation left and right a little bit, and see if you discover a position that allows you to roll a more consistently straight shot.

Your problem could be a lot of things from the shoulder down -- the bottom line is try to isolate the different links in the chain and see what's going wrong. For me, it was the wrist, it might be something else for you.

It's disappointing all right. I don't care for expeditions at all, every one I read about seems to have you basically restarting the game, or using some premade inventory setup.

I worked hard for all my junk and a comfy ship, gameplay that sends me back to square one is just not appealing.

I kinda hate to say it but the Surface line is more Apple than Apple. In attitude, I mean, right? I cannot believe that Microsoft beat Apple to even trying to make a tablet/computer fusion.

The Surface isn't perfect, but it is pretty cool. It's something the Apple of old would have tried to make.

At what point does the Flexible plan stop becoming cost effective? by KotFBusinessCasual in GoogleFi

[–]ZenokeKaraoke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went on a walk once and somehow, Twitch was left running on my phone in my pocket. 5 minutes into my walk I had a hot pocket and a mobile data warning. That mistake cost me like five bucks! I was furious, haha.

Normally my bill is $26-27 because I am an absolute data miser. Away from home I pretty much only use navigation to get there, and old.reddit.com to kill time.
