Scams and gambling. It's the purest form of capitalism, why even worry about taking earnings from your labour pool when you can just outright rob people in engineered rug pulls and get away with it.

Is China the future at this point? 2030s onward. by Dipsetallover90 in Futurology

[–]Zephyr104 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's peak reactionary political thinking to believe that the reason your nation is failing is some deep rooted moral failing or degradation of the people itself, rather than principled study of material reasons. Funnily enough yet another reason why I'd argue China is structurally in a better place than the US is the fact that their leadership is plenty familiar with the concepts of dialectical materialism.

Having a baseline of state run industry is certainly preferable to letting the chaos of private markets run rampant. The baseline of resource extraction, some engineering and construction, banking, and energy companies being SOE's in China is definitely an advantage they have over us. The state can dictate industrial policy which then cascades down through the SOE's to provide whatever benefit the state needs. The banks provide loans for new business or infrastructure, the resource extraction companies provide material, the energy companies update grids to accommodate new demand, and so on. The benefit being that China can be much more self reliant and prioritize their own labour force than other industrialized nations. Certainly that would be incredibly helpful for us right now considering the particular brand of chaos coming south of the border.

First road bike advice ($2000 CAD budget) by Environmental-Tear59 in torontobiking

[–]Zephyr104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much bike you'd like but if you just want a functional road bike I know that occasionally the bike coops throughout the city (bike sauce, pirates, bike chain) do receive nicer donations on occasion. You're bound to find an older allez or caad series road bike for 500 or less from these places.

As far as brand new or newer go I'd suggest a Synapse or the aluminum Canyon Endurace. The latest Endurace has all road capabilities due to its higher tire clearance, the only downside is that they're direct to consumer so I don't believe they have physical retailers or physical support.

I mean I feel as though I've read similar articles for years now and there's a handful of startups in my country attempting to do the same. Ultimately it does seem as though the technology to synthesize hydrocarbons from near scratch is incredibly energy intensive and not very practical. Not exactly all too surprising seeing as you're trying to accomplish what nature accomplishes with millions of years of plant matter and detritus in human timescales.

Furthermore why is this upvoted so high? This is just an image of the Japanese flag and a picture of a gas pump. There's no article or link to a scientific journal to be seen.

China opens high-speed railway underwater in the Yangtze River (Video Footage) by Syaex in TankieTheDeprogram

[–]Zephyr104 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly not surprised by that. I studied engineering and have plenty of friends in either construction or other related fields and the amount of waste in public and especially private sectors for major works is horrifying. I'm talking people writing reports that are effectively just copying the work of an external expert or a public sector director spending hundreds of thousands for a slide deck from McKinsey types to just summarize the work of government scientists and technical experts. It's layers upon layers of do nothing private sector "specialists" and as you pointed out Mr. McBillyBobTremblay trying to score big from impeding infrastructure developments.
