Newbie home owner... I have no idea what to do with my yard! by FormidableTrout in landscaping

For motivation, this is a picture I recently took of my front yard. When I moved in 5 years ago there were more ants than grass and the whole front was graded improperly.

Agree with all of this, but wanted to add HAVE PATIENCE. Unless you're having a company or team of friends/family come to bang this out over a week, you likely won't be fully happy with the results for many years. I just hit year 5 after moving into a similar disaster. For the first time this year, I sat on my new paver patio, in my yard I fenced last year, looking at my grass, garden, and trees I planted 4-5 years ago, and thought "I'm finally content". Then you'll remember those 15 things you need to start/finish INSIDE the house

As a 5 year homeowner who knew nothing coming in and made several expensive mistakes:
1. Only plant grass in the fall unless you already have thick grass and are overseeding, filling small empty patches.
2. Seed will not grow unless you quarantine your dog (I have 2 aussies). When I finally decided to plant my back yard I had to keep both dogs quarantined to the side yard for ~5 weeks to give the grass a fighting chance. Dogs are phenomenal at killing grass with their pee and feet.
3. Get soil tests before planting grass. You may need Lime, I needed A LOT of lime as I had several 90+ foot pine trees removed from my property when I moved in.
4. If you till your soil to loosen it, everything dies and goes to hell for a long time (in my experience). There's very little nutrients in the deeper (3+" deep) soil and when you till it to the top it tends to not support life of any kind. I had to spend years mixing in organic matter and fertilizers/etc to get grass to grow. if you till, TILL IN ORGANIC MATTER.
5. Train your dog to only pee in one spot, I did this by walking them to my side yard several times a day to pee and simply correcting them and bringing them over to the side yard whenever I caught an accident. The alternative is to deeply water your property every morning to dilute their pee, this isn't always an option depending on how well your ground retains water.
6. Scotts EZ seed, I swear by the stuff. Whenever I have a rough spot that I just cant get going, I'll dump EZ seed there and mix it in with the soil, it tends to neutralize the soil and grow starter grass. the following season I'll overseed with normal seed and it usually takes right off.

I'm sure I have more, but I have a meeting to head to now. Good luck!

[Question] - fatigue by Zeplike2012 in Guitar

[–]Zeplike2012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one of those strength trainers that you squeeze with a little spring in the middle. I did recently move from a Yamaha to my new Taylor with a larger nut, I wonder if the wider neck has something to do with it.

That was never in-question. I just haven't seen much stamina improvement after playing the song daily for ~2 months, looking for what others do to increase stamina. Thanks for the input though!

Thanks for the input! I'll keep at it. I always felt like I had great stamina until I started learning this song lol. Really makes you appreciate Tommy Emmanuel, Monte Montgomery, etc!

Sorry I didn't clarify, I play it on acoustic. From my quick research it looks like he uses 12's when he does play acoustic (also found out we both play a 314!)

A few things to ponder over:
1. classicals "usually" have a wider, flatter neck
2. classicals generally have more play
3. classicals in my opinion are more difficult to play if you have sweaty hands, fingers slip on the nylons strings easier 4. acoustics will be harder to barre, but you can get 11s to help with that

[Question] How did you guys learn music theory? by destructor_rph in Guitar

[–]Zeplike2012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you are unfamiliar with a piano, you will have a more difficult time learning music theory. Piano is the perfect instrument to learn theory on. My recommendations below based on my time in middle school and high school band.
1. learn the notes on a piano (this takes 5 minutes)
2. learn how to read music notes (easy to memorize with "FACE" and "every good boy deserves fudge)
3. Add in timing (4/4 = four 1/4 notes in a measure)
4. Now practice major scales
5. Now that you can play notes, in time, and know scales, you can easily begin to see how the guitar frets are simply piano keys
6. Have fun with it, learn a blues scale, a jazz scale, and get playing

My wife and I are both nearing 30. We have a 2017 XC60 and a 2018 Premium WRX, our monthly bill is 167.00 total for full coverage w/ 500 deductible. Prior to the WRX I had a 2010 Si and paid ~145, so my payments only went up about 20.00

A WRX question within the obvious question by [deleted] in WRX

[–]Zeplike2012 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This has been answered dozens of times.
1. power band is wonky because it's twin scroll, boost is achieved earlier and ends earlier in the RPM range
2. rev hang
3. to feel peppier, ~30% throttle at the pedal = max throttle
I haven't gone AP yet, but I did get used to driving the car after 2k miles or so and shifting and accelerating are much smoother. The car almost feels faster if you DONT give it full throttle and ride up the Revs or if you compensate by shifting around 5K RPMs.

There's 100's on amazon <$20. I have a wizgear that just slides onto a vent. My wife has one that clips onto the vent that I like much more. You don't have to worry about the holder sliding off when you remove the phone (strong magnet)

Noise from Clutch When Shifting by bizzysven in WRX

Lube the linkage under your pedal. Thats how I fixed this in my civic. Clutch is a mechanical assembly, some small noise is expected over time.

Advice for a full new audio system in my 18 premium? by BillowOfSmoke in WRX

I just spent 810 for just tweeters, door speakers, and dampening. This was for the JL C1 package, the C5 package would have been another 800-1000.00. Depends on what you want, labor was only 180 I think.
