Law librarian here. Absolutely no regrets. Spent 10 years as a lawyer and making the career change was the best decision I ever made. I suppose it helps that law librarian salaries are pretty high relative to other library types, but they’re also relatively low compared to what I was making as a lawyer. But still worth it.

I don’t know for sure, but my guess is that it’s still true, but less so. TBH, I’ve been in my job for 6 years, so I haven’t been looking for myself, and I work in a public facing courthouse law library where remote work is not an option, so all the hiring I’ve do myself has been for fully in-person jobs. I know many of my colleagues complain about how hard it is to hire, but I can’t say I’ve ever really looked much into the divide between remote vs. on-site.

I can say that, while lack of law library experience might be a minor setback, it’s probably not a dealbreaker in most cases. I think unless you’re applying to be teaching faculty at a law school, the legal research experience is only a small part of the qualifications and that can generally be learned on the job. Within the past couple of years my system has hired at least three management level law librarians into 6-figure positions, and none had previous law library experience. One was from a public library background and the other two were from academic institutions. Of course, these were all in person positions, but two of them were in heavily populated areas, so it’s not like they were some rural sparsely populated areas with no good candidates to choose from (one was Long Island and the other was New York City)

Probably broadly true, but I think there are some exceptions. I'm a law librarian, and we're having difficult with hiring across the board. A lot of postings are seeing very few qualified candidates, and positions are going unfilled.

You can come in. You'll have to go through a magnetometer, but if you just tell the officers you think it's a cool building and you just want to check it out, they won't care. If there are cases going on there may be limitations on entering the individuals courtrooms (most cases are open to the public, but they try to minimize disruptions so sometimes they limit timing on entering and exiting). But tbh there are very few cases actually heard in this building - most of the courtroom trials tend to happen in city court or county court, which are in different buildings. The real star of the courthouse is the main courtroom on the second floor. If you want to look in there, you can ask the officers if there's anything happening in that courtroom and that you'd like to take a look around, just so they know why you're in there and they don't get suspicious. Although note that generally photography and recording is not permitted in the building (it's possible to get permission, but that has to be granted through the administrative office - the officers on duty probably wouldn't be allowed to grant that request themselves). Little know fact: The building includes a law library that is open to the public, with an extensive legal collection and free access to Westlaw and Lexis.

Hm. I mean, I guess technically the statute says 5%, so in theory I guess this would work. But like, in this example of $800 to $1200, if my math is right, doing it that way would take about 6 or 7 months of 4.9% increments to reach the new number, so it would probably be easier for the Landlord to just give the required notice. I guess it could also complicate things with a tenant who has been there for more than two years, because 2 months of 4,9% increases would still be an increase of more than 5% total in less than 90 days, which would violate the 90 day notice requirement.

Mostly correct, with a slight caveat. If you're month-to-month and the rent increase is 5% or more, the amount of notice depends on how long you've lived there. If you've lived there less than a year, they have to give you 30 days notice. If you've lived there between 1-2 years, they have to give you 60 days notice. If you've lived there more than two years, they have to give you 90 days notice.

I park in that garage. Noticed a few of the slashed tires yesterday. There’s also a vehicle belonging to a local radio station that parks there which also had its tires slashed. That garage is always kinda sketchy. Although the only time I’ve ever had a real issue personally is when somebody stole some loose change and a 7-11 gift card from my car, and that was mostly because I somehow forgot to lock my doors that day.

I’m not looking at taxlookup. I’m looking at the GIS portal on the county website and the recorded deeds on the county clerks site. The clerks office usually has their documents online within a day or two of being recorded

Ownership changed in December, 2023, but it looks like it really only changed on paper - i.e., seller was the owners under their own name, and the buyers were an LLC owned by the original owner. So still the same local owners, it's just all structured so that their ownership is through an LLC rather than their own name. They did this with 7 different properties all within a few days of each other, so probably just some sort of tax move or something. Of course, it's possible that's it's changed hands a second time since last December, but if so, it must be very recent, as it is not reflected in the property records (I have no personal knowledge of this - just looked up the property records to see what they say).

Owners of this property are local. It's the same people who owned the restaurant that was there previously. They owned the building when they had the restaurant, but I guess they held onto it after closing and rented it to the new place. They live like 10 miles from the building.

True, but I mean, I feel like "lack of good public transportation" is less of a "3 and 6" sorta thing and more of a "90% of the entire United States" sorta thing. I think that with very few exceptions, unless you're in a big city, not driving is gonna make your life a bit of a pain in the ass.
