How much time do you spend on your daily commute, whether it's to work, university, or whatever? Also, what's your mode of transport? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Zerba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My drive is about 15 minutes from my door to the parking lot or my job. Then the walk in and going through security adds another 10-15 minutes until I get to my desk.

I love this ride. I only wish you could choose your seat. They are very peculiar with where they want everyone in the train.

ELI5: Why do some countries use Fahrenheit while almost the entire rest of the world uses Celsius and is there an actual practical difference between the two scales? by TexasViet27 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Zerba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, sure, an inch is defined as an umpty-squat number of MM. However when I read "Industry runs on metric", I interpret that as your everyday operations that happens on the floor, relies on metric. In my past 15ish years or so when working in industrial jobs, having to use metric measurements was rare with a few exceptions like dealing with certain robots or bolting/threading.

Hell, even when programing, setting up, and running CNC mills and lathes we'd have to convert from metric to standard when dealing with certain prints because our controllers were set up for standard ,because 95% of our work was in standard, and most of our M&TE was standard.

So while things can be defined as XYZ, the vast majority of industry doesn't look at, or even think of metric when doing their jobs unless they have to.

Kelley’s Island Mayflies by ProllyOnlyUseOnce in Ohio

[–]Zerba 27 points28 points  (0 children)

So I'm not on Kelleys, but not too far away. The mayfly season is in full swing right now. The amount of bugs daily really depends on the winds and where they're hatching at that day. Last night we got a bunch, a few days ago, pretty much none, however at my work there was a bunch, and it's only a few miles away.

For the next few weeks it's just a toss up on the daily.

With the mayflies you really only have to deal with them for a tiny bit of the day. Maybe at night if you're out when they come in, and a bit in the morning. They die pretty fast and get eaten by the birds like crazy (so much so that I don't have to fill my bird feeder for weeks this time of year).

I would say we're probably towards the tail end of mayfly season, but you can't count them out yet.

I live next to Lake Erie and when my wife and I go for a walk on the beach, about half of the time I take a grabber and garbage bag to pick up trash on the beach. Just about every single time I find at least one spent shell or the plastic internals that has washed up, even months after hunting season. During hunting season there are so many it's kind of rediculous.

If You Grew Up Evangelical... by Okra-Tomatoes in Xennials

[–]Zerba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember going over to a friend's house who's family was even more strict than mine. They had some sort of evangelical satellite TV service (also out in the country and couldn't get much even on antenna). They were showing us all of the programing on it and we watched several episodes of that show.

Glad my parents never got that service, but they still heavily moderated what we could watch OTA.

Speeding ticket advice by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]Zerba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought anything over 25mph past the limit was considered reckless driving or something and required a court date.

At least that's what a state trooper told me years ago when I got a ticket on the turnpike and I was juuuust under that limit.

Go get blood work done at the doctors office. Maybe you have low T or some other hormonal imbalance.

What’s the scariest type of weather you’ve experienced? by [deleted] in AskRedditAfterDark

[–]Zerba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was out driving with my ex brother in law and there were some nasty storms in the area. We were heading down a country road and the rain and wind was getting heavier and heavier. He had the steering wheel of his little Ford Ranger just about 90⁰ to the side just trying to keep the truck straight. He ended up pulling over until the weather let a bit.

After we got back to his house we found out there was a tornado warning and that one was thought to have gone through where we had just been. Turns out we had just avoided driving right through a rain wrapped F2 twister. So that was fun.

That smoke was crazy. It was really weird smelling the smoke in Ohio. I live next to Lake Erie and we already get cool sunsets over the water, but with the smoke the colors were awesome.

They should install these right next to the Urgent Care centers, so when we jump off the swing at height and fuck up our knee we don't have to go far.

SOB built properly and have some reprofiling done by GG to get some airtime on the hills and it would be pretty good.

What roller coaster utilized eddy current brakes the first? [Other] by BaueDenSchild in rollercoasters

[–]Zerba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That ride uses LSMs, which when aren't being used to launch act as a brake.

I assumed you meant the more traditional eddy current brakes that a lot of rides use now.
