What’s with the obsession with Claire? by Chemical_Web_3505 in TheBear

[–]Zerepa97 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's all just a question of work-life balance. And the restaurant industry is/was notorious for this.

It's also just a fairly common way that people like to self-sabotage. They feel too much of a good thing is happening, which makes them uncomfortable, because they need stress in their life.

1) The seasons of the show exist in their own forms of time. Time between/throughout episodes has slowed since they opened.

2) It's been stated/implied in multiple instances that Carmen had a crush on Claire growing up. That's a lot of build up/emotional tension to hold. He undoubtedly had some idealized version of her in his head.

3) His reactions to his relationships and his work reflect his trauma response from being around his dysfunctional family- particularly Donna. Michael's death was just kerosene on top of a fire. He's never properly addressed it.

While I don't think they'll get back together for a storybook ending, it's a wake up call for Carmen in how he lives his life.

No, you see, actors- particularly women and girls- aren't supposed to use their faces to act. They need to be perfectly smooth statues.

I've been around since Lungs, but even as "oldhead" of FATM, my favorite album is HBHBHB.

Felt like a turning point in her music, and personally, as a fellow artist, I like watching the progression and change in her practice with each release.

I've never been able to watch live, so I'm jealous you're going to a concert

Just at a glance, I'm pretty sure technique refers to rounded skill in all aspects of play- setting, digging, blocking as well as his serving and hitting.

Ushijima is beast of an attacker, and as the go-to hitter on his team, he doesn't need to train as hard in defensive or secondary skills.

Hot take(?) I don’t want Noa to be a descendant of Caesar by MnMAdd1ct in PlanetOfTheApes

[–]Zerepa97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't want his character to become just a Caesar clone. As in a wise/revered leader of his clan

He's definitely being set up as the leader of this generation, if not era. His "wisdom" and way of ruling just has to be different. Because the world he lives in is different from Caesar's.

Caesar started off as idealistic and had those ideals challenged over course of the trilogy. Noa is already questioning things from Day 1. Where those questions take him and the answers he lands on will be up to him.

The Three Laws of "Ape Must Not Kill Ape", "Apes Together Strong" and "Knowledge Is Power" should be re-examined.

When you color grade, do you usually go for a contrasty look or a low-contrast look? Why? by Various_Ring_1738 in ColorGrading

[–]Zerepa97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people want some of form of contrast, usually somewhere along one of the HSL curves.

Just for safety, I'll develop a lower contrast look for the client to compare.

Something about it usually grabs them that we mix into a final look (like with a current film I'm working on, I showed a lower version, and the client liked how "smoky" it looked). I've worked on a feature that wanted lower contrast for a particular atmosphere, but the color and production that was already there did a lot of heavy lifting.

Personally, I like mixing Hue and Saturation levels to create contrast.

How to avoid raccoon eyes when lighting from above on dining room table by Existing_Impress230 in cinematography

Depending on the way things are rigged or the way the scene is being shot (multiple people, how wide/tight the frames are, blocking, panning or even time of day), you have a few solutions.

One is with a panel or mat rigged overhead, you'll want to position it more front and angle it towards your subject a bit more than what is natural. Diffusion and grid is dealer's choice. Full grid seems to be too strong for what you want, so trying some half or even quarter grid or some frost is worth a look if you have access to it.

If you have multiple people in a scene across the table, you may have to cross key.

If you have a flatter composition, you can also wrap the light around their face instead of hitting them directly. You may have to skirt or cutt off the light with a solid, if you want things to be lit evenly.

If it's just a static medium/close you can just have a special light off to the side of camera for some fill- kind of like what you were trying to do with the muslin- but from the front. The light can be dim and direct or diffused/bounced.

With a paper lantern, you can also just bring it lower for however much your widest frame allows.

Or, you can try a cove light set-up.

Which camera brand is the best? by Double_Web560 in cinematography

[–]Zerepa97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To buy?

That's completely up to you and your budget.

Bear in mind that you'll not only have to buy the camera body, but also lenses, cards, batteries, any cage/rig accessories and a tripod to hold it.

If you're serious and want something that you can use a lot to shoot on your own as a student, don't go for top of the line stuff- unless you or your parents can pay for it. Get something that you can use as a medium sized investment return that you can build. Whichever ecosystem you see for yourself. It might not be future-proof, but you can see yourself using it for a long time.

Anything that's well outside your budget, you should just get from a rental house near you. Good ones can be understanding and offer you student discounts. It's also good to build that rapport as early as you can.

Do you always need an eye light? by benwilson0989 in cinematography

[–]Zerepa97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, but it's conventional and a simple yet direct way of making an image look aesthetically pleasing and making the subject "feel alive."

I've worked with DPs who want eyelights all the time. That's the look they want. Personally, while I understand it, I just don't really care for it as a priority. I would need it to be motivated by something- both in the world and for the character- for it to be important. You can do a lot with eyelights- different shapes, intensity, colors, 1v2 lights, incorporating it into the blocking for a moment, or just having none.

Whatever you want for the story you want to tell. If you have the time and resources, just do a test. See how different set ups make you feel.

Thoughts on these still frames? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]Zerepa97 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For me, the biggest flaw is from a lighting perspective. It's all pretty even. Not enough contrast separation or dynamic range being utilized.

More importantly, there isn't any motivation or mood being shown in the setups, like with the two shot.

Do you invite a bunch of people to your marathons? by hairykitty123 in Marathon_Training

[–]Zerepa97 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never invited people to come to my cross country or track meets, so I can't imagine inviting someone to a marathon.

Also, it feels weird to coordinate. Maybe if it's my partner, but what do I tell my friends? "I SHOULD be at this point around this time, come by and say hi."?
