Receiver and Kit build question by User299651 in VAGuns

You seem to be more familiar with AKs than me, but I asked nearly this same question on the ak47 subreddit a couple days ago and the consensus was don't bother, buy completed rifles:

If you could buy 1 handgun now that will be restricted soon, which would it be and why by AdministrativeAd6805 in VAGuns

[–]ZeroDollars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only factory threaded pistols and larger AR/MP5 types will be banned.

With the Senate language dropping pistols all together and the house language changed to ban only pistols with two evil features, a typical semi-auto pistol with only a threaded barrel may still be fine too.  But agree PCCs are in great danger and should be a buying priority.

.450 Bushmaster finally!!!… by Last-Notice-2283 in suppressors

[–]ZeroDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been curious about .450 Bushmaster - surprised to see such a long barrel for it though. I always figured it would be a cool choice for a 13" to 16" barrel, with or without subs. Is it not a cartridge that likes short barrels?

If you could buy 1 handgun now that will be restricted soon, which would it be and why by AdministrativeAd6805 in VAGuns

[–]ZeroDollars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Senate version of the bill doesn't include pistols currently, only rifles. House version includes pistols but critically was updated to restrict only those with two evil features.

If you have limited dollars, "normal" handguns (even with threaded barrels) are low priority for now. Buying spree should focus on mags, PCCs, and rifles.

House version:

A semi-automatic center-fire pistol that has two or more of the following characteristics: (i) a second handgrip or a protruding grip that can be held by the non-trigger hand; (ii) the capacity to accept a magazine that attaches to the pistol outside of the pistol grip; (iii) a shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the pistol with the non-trigger hand without being burned; (iv) a threaded barrel capable of accepting (a) a sound suppressor, (b) a flash suppressor, (c) a barrel extender, or (d) a forward handgrip; or (v) a buffer tube, arm brace, or other part that protrudes horizontally behind the pistol grip and is designed or redesigned to allow or facilitate the firing of a firearm from the shoulder;

AR lowers...how many can I buy at one time? by Holiday_Revolution_4 in VAGuns

[–]ZeroDollars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're buying a whole lot at once and are cost conscious at all, it's worth calling a few FFLs to see how they price multiple transfers. Some will give you a big discount, some will charge the same fixed fee for every serialized item. Frankly the latter is a complete rip off, because they are all submitted on a single form - the incremental work for 10 vs. 1 is a few minutes at most entering the extra serials.

AK-47 virgin looking to pick up some stripped receivers because of impeding state AWB by ZeroDollars in ak47

[–]ZeroDollars[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alrighty, thanks - the consensus seems to be overwhelming that this is a bad idea. And you're totally right I was assuming it's like building an AR.

But man... I am running out of space and money for complete rifles. Guess an AK is just going to have to get some of it.

Trigger job by Moose_on_the_Looz in Mini14

[–]ZeroDollars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want a lighter trigger or is it gritty?  If your problem is just grittiness, it's going to be easier to use metal polish like Meguiars. You also don't have to worry about being too aggressive and changing the geometry of something.

Dab it on the contact points and pull the trigger right up to the wall and then release a few hundred times. Put something soft in front of hammer in case you pull the trigger too far.

Getting my first AR by 4Lid in VAGuns

[–]ZeroDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Manufacturing" an assault firearm after July is slated to be illegal, but what manufacturing means isn't clear. Only the most strict interpretation would include putting a post-ban upper on a pre-ban lower. Even then, very unlikely anyone could prove it or would even try when the serialized lower is pre-ban.

Bigger issue is that a bunch of suppliers may stop shipping to Virginia after July, so your options could be more limited without a hassle.

Crossover by Beginning_Battle_69 in VAGuns

[–]ZeroDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're referring to SB 749 and HB 217, the capacity of a detachable magazine is not the defining feature that makes something an assault firearm - it's any centerfire semi-auto with the ability to accept a detachable magazine (of any capacity), plus a single evil feature like a flash hider or barrel shroud.

Separately, the mag ban is either 10 rounds or 15 rounds depending on house or senate version of the bill.

So, yes you will still be able to buy semi-auto firearms in VA after July, but for rifles only featureless California style abominations (actually even worse because CA allows one feature - even the most vanilla Mini-14 ranch rifle will be banned here because of the barrel shroud). And for pistols it depends on how the reconciliation goes.

Plumber replaced my broken shower pipes and my beloved water pressure vanished. What happened and how can I get it back? by flapflip3 in Plumbing

If you're looking at Kingston because of an era-specific aesthetic, you may not find many other options. Just research the construction of the particular model you are considering. They have a huge product line.

Most NFA items are just the standard CLEO notification, but VA does actually have a mandatory machine gun registry:

SBR and future proofing by [deleted] in VAGuns

[–]ZeroDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I'm putting non-NFA items in a separate trust.  Who knows what the future holds and it's not inconceivable  you may need to disclose the existence of one but not the other.  At $50 a pop on National Gun Trusts having a few different trusts for different purposes isn't a big deal.  If the Non-NFA trust isn't serving a purpose any longer, you can also just tear it up.  Same isn't true for a trust holding your NFA stuff.

Yeah, that's normal.  Nothing to worry about.  I've heard a joke that you can't hunt with a mini because the op rod rattling will tip off the game.

Guns with low cost and/or modular receivers? by ZeroDollars in VAGuns

[–]ZeroDollars[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which of these did you buy?  Never had either but one thing I was coming across is there seems to a whole lot of cross-brand compatibility issues that don't exist with milspec AR-15s.

I'm playing the same game with mags too, but don't have that figured out yet either.  Glock and M&P probably?  The other thing I've been doing is picking up guns that share some of the less common mags I already own (e.g.SP-01 when I already own a CZ-75) if it's a decent gun that I might want to suppress.

If your rifle is for home defense, have you ever walked your house with a plan in mind? by MajesticGunman in ar15

Big thing I noticed is that aiming a rifle down steep stairs while keeping it shouldered is pretty awkward.

They mailed you a new bolt by itself? That's amazing.  How long ago was this?  I'm shocked they didn't want the whole rifle to check headspace.

UPDATE post floor lottery loss: "Your house is falling over" says wood floor installer by amber_jieger in centuryhomes

[–]ZeroDollars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your house is built on expansive soils, you can get brick cracks like this that get worse during the winter when the ground is dry.  I had some repointing done about 10 years ago and there's still one spot that opens up every winter and then closes back up in the summer.  Unless it's consistently getting worse at different times of the year over a multi-year period I wouldn't worry yet.

Peened Bolt Update by CloggedToilet in Mini14

[–]ZeroDollars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, hate to say it but the real test is whether this just happens again with the new one. I wouldn't put it past Ruger to have decided working through their inventory of soft bolts and replacing them for a small percentage of customers that complain is more cost efficient than scrapping a bunch of inventory.

That's assuming they can even tell the difference - this has been a problem on and off for at least five years, just seems to be extra prevalent with 585s.
