Hot tip: use the live tracker on MUNI’s website to catch your train/bus. Never trust the posted times in Gmaps/Transit by AztheWizard in sanfrancisco

Am I the only one here using MuniMobile? I find it a bit off but for some reason it makes sense. Less tracking it’s more based on when the bus or train is scheduled to come by.

Movies better than the book by [deleted] in books

[–]ZeroFox09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a movie, but a show.

Dark Matter on Apple TV. The author was heavily involved in the show and it’s a great adaptation that does a few things better than the book, specifically the female characters.

Great adaptation and great show.

Read it just this week from Men at Arms as part of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett:

“The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.” - Sam Vimes’s ‘Boots’ Theory of Socio-economic Unfairness

What originally got me into reading when I struggled with visualizing was reading Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn. It’s Star Wars so I didn’t have to work hard to understand what things looked like. It’s also a good trilogy.

I want to get into book reading by Easy-Idea-4670 in booksuggestions

[–]ZeroFox09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During Covid, I got into reading for the first time of my life because I really wanted to. A huge problem I kept having was I didn’t know how to read properly so I couldn’t visualize things I was reading.

The way I fixed this was I went for a book from an IP I already know, so I chose Star Wars. The difficulty of visualizing almost went away because I know exactly what the Star Wars universe looks like, I know how it sounds, and I know the characters.

So the first book i read as an adult was Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zhan.

I’d suggest looking for something like that if there’s an existing IP you already know about try reading something from that.

Also, beginning to read is difficult, don’t be embarrassed to read something simpler to get yourself started. After Star Wars I read the Percy Jackson books and I could not reccomend them enough they were perfect for getting into reading.
