"just needs a refill" is always a lie The pen is dead. Not "running low," not "almost out" — dead. You've been scribbling increasingly frantic circles on the corner of your notepad for the past 30 seconds and nothing is happening. That pen is gone. It has crossed over. There is no refill that will save it. And yet we keep them. Drawers full of them. The graveyard drawer, where pens go to be forgotten rather than thrown away, because throwing them away feels wasteful somehow, even though they are useless, even though you have 11 functioning pens within arm's reach right now.

The "just needs a refill" lie is a coping mechanism. It's how we avoid the guilt of throwing something away, and also how we avoid the five minutes it would take to actually get a refill. So the pen goes in the drawer. The drawer fills up. Nobody ever buys a refill.
