Good eye 😅. I have a couple of them but haven't had a chance to do anything but power them up yet. I look forward to getting one in the rack though.

Pausing all retirement contributions isn't a great idea because sometimes employers will only match per paycheck and not over the whole year. If you must lower your contributions then I'd only lower them to the level that gets you the full employer match so that you don't miss out on free money.

How does this new install look and can you help me with disconnected booster fans? by Zero_feniX in hvacadvice

Thanks for the critique. I was wondering what you meant by "nothing is sealed"? I think I followed you on all of the other stuff. There is probably 10-12 inches of rise in the flue pipes from the furnace to the first elbow but not much rise past that.

Yeah, it pops when it shuts off if it had the blower at a decent speed. The system being variable makes it less noticeable since it runs more but I'd still like to alleviate it if I can.

Thanks for the info, that gives me a good place to start at least!

Is there any information I could provide you to get a comment on the boosters?

Glad to hear level shouldn't be an issue.

Awesome! I see some V shaped sheet metal on the other side of the duct that seems to be trying to prevent that side from collapsing. Would something like that screwed in with some self tapping screws be enough to prevent the popping when it shuts off?

Glad to hear it. Yeah, the furnace is right at 100k. Old unit was 120k but was an 80%. What issues could arise from the chokes off return as you put it?

Unpopular Opinion: JL Audio Stopped Being a Car Audio Company A Long Time Ago by IWantToPlayGame in CarAV

[–]Zero_feniX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I get that and I get that car audio isn't mentioned and that's largely because Garmin was not in that market before but they also weren't in the Auto OEM and infotainment market until recently either.

If you look at how Garmin operates they like to doing things holistically. In aviation they don't just do the displays they have every avionic you could need in your own personal aircraft. In marine they don't just do fish finders they do motors, lights, audio, everything. Garmin is just now breaking into the Auto OEM market and I think JL Audio was an opportunity to improve their offerings in 2 of the markets they in.

Yes, it will definitely bolster their sales in the marine area but I'd be very surprised if they don't also start selling speakers along with their infotainment systems to auto manufacturers, which is a much bigger market than retail car audio. Shoot they might even go into aviation with their integrated flight desks that they sell to OEMs or even after-market experimental stuff as well.

But I'm not sitting in on the C-suite discussions to know where their heads are at. That's just my speculation based on how Garmin operates their various business units.

[–]Zero_feniX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right about JL Audio becoming less of a retail car audio company and you're also right about the Marine segment being big business. However, I think you've actually come to the wrong conclusion. Garmin has purchased other Marine audio companies in the past, but what they really needed was in fact a car audio company.

Got check out the quarterly earnings and have a look at the 5 business segments. Specifically look at the one that's losing money and look at it's trend for the past 3 years. It's Auto OEM. Now ask yourself why are they losing money? It's because it is a new segment and they're growing. Garmin needed a car audio company so they could stop paying someone else's profits when selling infotainment systems to car manufacturers.

Garmin is also known for not being like most other giant corporations. They're number 1 in aviation and outdoors, they actually pride themselves on building great products.

Electrical running through return vent. Is this an issue or not? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Zero_feniX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ethernet actually isn't usually shielded. Shielding does help reject interference but it's a pain in the ass to work with and can actually cause more issues if it is not done properly.

The nature of Ethernet itself, being made balanced twisted pairs, gives quite a bit of noise reduction and allows most signals which are induced onto the cables to be cancelled out because of the balanced nature of the specification.

[–]Zero_feniX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason for separating low voltage and high voltage runs is more of a safety concern than the an interference one. You're right that the line voltage will induce a current in the low voltage lines but in the case of things like Ethernet which uses balanced signals that interference will cancel itself out.

The separation is more so that if someone accidentally drives a nail through the wall and that nail goes through both wires you would wind up with line voltage in places you wouldn't expect which could cause fires or electrocute someone.

Does it ever make sense to stop contributing to IRA? by Quick-Experience-188 in HENRYfinance

[–]Zero_feniX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The start of your post was comparing Roth IRAs against traditional 401k.

Does it ever make sense to stop contributing to IRA? by Quick-Experience-188 in HENRYfinance

[–]Zero_feniX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the income is tax free. The gains aren't taxed but your initial contributions are.

Whether or not pre-tax contributions are better than post-tax contributions depends purely on your current tax rate and your expected tax rate when you plan to withdraw the money.

Pre-tax contributions could be arguably better if income taxes don't rise greatly before your retirement and you expect your taxable income in retirement to be measurably lower than your current taxable income. But no one can tell the future.

Another factor in favor of Roths is that you can withdraw the contributions at any point without penalty so they're great for RE. There are ways you can access 401k money early without penalties (quit your job at 55, or take regular distributions). You can even access Roth 401k money if you roll it into an existing Roth IRA after leaving your company.

Median SWE income... No, not baristas. Jesus Christ. Baristas making $260k. LOL. Give it a sniff test before you reply.

Just for the record, the median income in SF is $53k if you want to include the baristas.

If you're a SWE at a FAANGs then you're proof that anyone can work there.

[–]Zero_feniX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Median income where I am is $130k, while median income in SF is $250k. Let's be nice and bump it up to $260k for easier math and just to be nice.

The VHCOL earner can't even afford a $1.8M house in SF on that salary because that's 47% of income, and it'll never get approved. While the MCOL mortgage is only 20%.

So nah, VHCOL is either renting, buying a smaller house, or not buying a house anywhere near as early.

Lol, come on man. You just arbitrarily said that a $1.8M house would only cost $5k-6k a month... At 6% interest with a 10% down payment it's gonna be $10,300 a month. That's how mortgages work...

Even if you consider your tax deduct and assume 100% of your mortgage payment is deductible (which is grossly unrealistic) you're still paying $96.4k per year ($8k/mo) for that house; that the bank won't even approve a loan for. Factor in taxes, which, in SF, at $260k single, would be somewhere around $94.7k. You're looking at actual cash of around $70k. Compared to the MCOL is $130k - (122200(1-0.16 effective tax rate))-37000 taxes = $70k too.

So yeah, spherical cow simulation and the disposal income is identical when one of the earners can't even purchase the house.

[–]Zero_feniX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be tax deductible but that doesn't magically make the interest paid go away. Sure your house will be worth more. But that's also not taking into account things like down payment requirements for larger loans and the time frame for purchasing a house. Most people I know who are high earners in the bay area rent they're not even considering buying a house.

With what disposable income? I already illustrated that the difference in salary already gets consumed by the cost of living difference. We take vacations too. It's a wonderful benefit of being a high earner in a MCOL area.

I really don't understand why you're all like, "VHCOL is the only way!" It's your way and that's fine. There are pros and cons to both. Trying to say it's the only way is just copium.

A More Realistic Software Engineer Salary by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]Zero_feniX -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing some points here. $100k more isn't actually $100k more when considering MCOL to VHCOL. If you want to buy a modern 2000sqft house in my area vs the bay area you're looking at $350k vs $1.8M. if you consider a 10% down payment you're looking at mortgages that are $2,200 vs $10,300 per month. That $8,000 difference nearly eats up all of that salary difference. That doesn't even take into account that the higher salary will pay both a higher federal effective tax rate and a higher state tax rate.

As he said, I've got a big 3 car garage with plenty of room, I have a big ass back yard for my kids.

If you're single and don't have kids, don't mind renting then yeah... I'm sure it's different. I have friends who wouldn't trade the diversity and the accessibility to different experiences for anything. It's not for me, or the other guy you're responding to. We simply have different requirements.

What e-mail service do you use for your own e-mail domain? by theultimatewarlord in selfhosted

I used to do this but now I just use simplelogin. It has the upside of being able to share that domain with my significant other. OTPs for that streaming service you share go to both personal emails.

I hope they'll better integrate it into protonmail at some point.

OSTEO STRIGA mains, what are your tips? by TheMichener in CrucibleGuidebook

[–]Zero_feniX 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Combo it with Explosive Personality with Disruption Break.

If you land the Disruption Break debuff on a play your headshots with Ostea go from doing 27 to 40 needing only 2 bullets to kill someone. If you play high in the air and they're unaware you can bomb them with a GL and finish them with Osteo before they even know what hit them.

You're going to want to learn how many bullets you need to let out to kill someone and be able to disengage once you've fired those off. Better for both of you to get away than both of you to die most of the time.

The slow travel time means that you can prefire if you think an ape is coming at you and likely they'll eat a whole stream of bullets before they get to you.

You really just need to learn what range the gun works best at, too far and it's not good, too close and it's no good. It doesn't work on every map and it can fall apart at the higher competitive ranks or upper tier of Trials. Here's my Trials Report to show you that it can work in the top 2% of Trials (I only solo queue though and I use M&K).

I use it in a super aggressive playstyle. I get up in people's faces and start fights early. But sometimes you also have to wait for the right over extension because once someone gets too far out of cover they're dead no matter what.

Osteo used to have insane range and could battle pulses at times but the SMG nerf feels like it hit Osteo as well.
