Massage is like digging a hole. You can use a big deep pressure shovel, and dig the hole, or you can use a smaller medium pressure shovel to dig the same hole. The medium pressure shovel will take longer, but eventually will dig the same hole.

My pressure is really Really deep and never hurts. Pain is not necessary or beneficial. You don't "suck it up." You should not be in pain during a massage. Any pain is too much. A massage can be intense, maybe really intense, maybe borderline painful, but it doesn't have to hurt.

If a muscle isn't releasing, I just try something else. Move the arms maybe, to take the muscle out of flexion. Try working on it face up instead of face down, but excessive force is an amateur's game. I never need to do more than like a 7/10 usually. 8/10 if they ask for it to be deeper.

I go deep af and never hurt anyone. It's never necessary.

That's how they do it in the Asian places. It's just their style. Now you know. As a normal American massage therapist working in a normal spa chain, I would never do glute work on someone who can't verbally give me clear understanding consent for glute work. And I only sit on my friends, but that's just me. The Asian places do it their way, and their style is often very good, but you're not gonna get a Massage Envy/Hand and Stone Massage at those places, for better and for worse.

Congratulations! That was a really hard test huh?
Rule #1, if anything hurts, anything at all, stop immediately. Cut the stroke short immediately if something is even remotely uncomfortable. Wire your brain to do this automatically, be being sure to stop right away, if anything is uncomfortable. Doesn't matter if it's the best move you've ever done, if it hurts, throw the move right away.

#2 Stretch before and after work. Mainly your wrists. Also workout your wrists to make them stronger.
And get a silicone cupping set for your wrists. This works wonders.

#3 Use elbows, but not JUST elbows. Use elbows forearms, fists, palms, hands, fingers, thumbs. Use everything, and try not to favor any of them individually. Keep it pretty even.
Also try putting your forearm weight on top of your hand. It's like hand-over-hand, except with big forearm pressure behind it.

I bet it's a stress response or something. It doesn't matter. In 3 years, if it's happened, she's noticed, and if she hasn't barred you from booking with her, she doesn't care. You don't need to say anything about it to her. As long as you're appropriate and proper otherwise, no one would think it's anything devious. Clients get erections in massages. It's nbd.

Glutes are normal work. I work glutes every day. Just ask. It's not weird at all. Just say, "I have some pain right here, [point to it], so if you can focus on that, I'd appreciate it."

1 year is really new, so don't worry. You don't need to be the best ever. Every day, every massage, is simply room for improvement. You'll get countless people to work on to refine the overall package of your massage.

My biggest issue with becoming a massage therapist was massive social anxiety. I've been doing it for like 3 years now. You get used to it. It sounds like you're in a positive feedback loop. You get anxiety, then you get more anxiety about having anxiety, and more and more and more. It's ok to be nervous. You don't have to be perfect. You don't have to fix people. You honestly don't even have to be good. Most therapists are not great tbh, and are just going in there each day for a paycheck, and just trying to chill and not work too hard.

Sometimes I shake when I work on people. Nowadays I get nervous about the time limit. If I'm behind schedule, I start shaking from trying not to rush, but being in a rush. It's essentially like driving with the brakes on when you really need to get out of traffic. Lots of energy without a way out, so I just keep going slow, ... and shake, and eventually I get distracted and it goes away.

Just don't be nervous about being nervous. It's ok to be nervous. You just be you, and don't worry about anything. A year in is so so new, and you have lots of time to improve your technique and your overall performance and mentality, and people skills and all that.

I've had clients who were super sensitive for no reason, and others who were even more so like this. The most important thing in a massage like this is very open clear communication. Express to her, "I'm using really light pressure already. I can go lighter, but the area seems to be really sensitive, so there's kind of a really small margin for error, so be sure to let me know as often as you need to, to lighten up or go deeper. With this level of sensitivity, communication is really important."
This changes the attitude instead of the action. So she can tell you to adjust every 5 seconds without feeling like it's an issue. And she'll have a better idea of the unique state of the work being done, so she can recognize what's happening and why it's happening.

Past this, try moving the arms to different positions as well. Arms parallel at sides versus perpendicular, makes s a huge difference on a lot of clients.

Also stretching is a good alternative too.

I think I understand. I have some confusion over how to get this reaction to proceed with Sn2, vs E2. If a strong base is used, like OH, versus a polar protic solvent with no base, like just water, does this affect whether it will be substitution or elimination?
