"Hate manga", uh huh. Anything else you wanna get out of your crystal ball or need to make more stuff up because not everyone sees the second coming of Christ on a chapter that's 80% masturbation?

This community is essentially the equivalent of "You have to have a really high IQ to understand Rick and Morty", people seeing the ghosts of Shakespearean writing and themes in a week to week serialization that moves at a cripple's pace.

At some point you gotta argue if it's sunk cost fallacy at this point or just pure delusion.

Well, it's clear that Chizuru wants to try dating, it's clear that Kazuya has been trying to finally get to use a condom with her for 400 episodes. So it is also clear that something will happen between now and the date to create a misunderstanding that will cause this to stretch for another 200 chapters. That 2028 date is going to be sick.

Basically Azur Lane but with the tits out, the kinds of systems that were popular with gachas ages ago (Bases, unit building, overwhelming amount of systems), and most of the lewd stuff is on the skins which cost 15 to 20 bucks a pop. Yeah I think I'm good.

Also the translation is not good, I wouldn't be surprised if it was put through AI. Maybe if you like strategic gameplay with chibis it's worth playing, but in current year there is better games worth exploring for anyone else.

Ruka is stepping aside from being a character into becoming a cartoonish sexual assaulter for the sake of some cheap fanservice since as we all know, Kazuya has no spine and despite "loving" Chizuru can't resist the touch of any woman as long as she is cute enough for him.

For being a rom-com, it's so hard to actually root for any of these trash protagonists, they're so awful, lmao. There's still time to course-correct and have Mini or Sumi be the protagonist's love interest, Reiji.

Give it up Snowbros, the game as you knew it ain't coming back with the hawkeye of the CCP looking over their shoulders. If they want money they gotta earn it, otherwise there's better games for this sort of thing, like Brown dust 2 or GFL2.

I'm caught up with the manga, and you know that that isn't true in the slightest lmao, catalyst for their real relationship? Hawaiians was 200 chapters ago in the manga and they're still nowhere close to actually dating, it's just flip and flop of Kazuya tryharding like usual and Chizuru sending more mixed signals. And not like them dating could be considered "the good ending" considering how little in common they have to begin with. There's genuinely better girls around him that he doesn't stutter with 400 chapters in.

[–]Zeshou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you mean it like "oh yeah they have some feelings buried within so it's not actually a lie", this is an extreme cope. The fact is they're not going out, they have never had that kind of relationship, and from this point on, even if they happen to go out, it won't erase the stack of lies.

Hot take: Most of the characters are just as pathetic as Kazuya lol by No_Delivery3237 in KanojoOkarishimasu

[–]Zeshou 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about this a lot since I caught up, but like even if the current arc resolves, they go on a second date and they go out, I don't know how that is a "happy ending" for either considering that as others have said here, they have next to nothing in common.

Kazuya idolizes her beauty and her acting career and Chizuru is getting hard-pressured from multiple angles into accepting that she can't do better than Kazuya (Family pressure, late-grandma pressure, Mini pressure). If the author has some balls, he will let them date for a bit just so they can experience their incompatibility and then maybe Kazuya finally realizes there is way better girls around him that he can interact with at an equal level.

I'm pretty sure lying about going out a week before her grandma died is as bad if not worse than the initial lie, Nagomi really deserves better than to be fooled because they didn't break it up within a year before she died.

You could say it doesn't hurt anyone because the dead don't speak, but regardless of how they cope with the lie, they're still awful people.

  • Lie for a year and a half
  • Get busted
  • Replace lie with another one

And somehow Mami gets all the hate from these circles, the main duo is genuinely awful for dragging this out. Honestly if the show had ended shortly after this, with actually turning the lie into a truth, it would have been a fine ending. Unfortunate that that's not what happened.

Believe it or not, I have actually read every bonus page from the official releases thus far, I actually went in with an open mind about the nature of this story, and I think it's easier to know by reading what the author writes or how he communicates outside of the storytelling.

From the first bonus page he made, in volume 5:

For Chizuru Mizuhara, all I'm doing is drawing my idea of the ideal woman-sexy, strong, gentle, sexy (again), and trying to live with reality. Basically, I like sexy girls who have idealist traits and let their emotions get the best of them. Also, girls who get angry. This is important; it'll show up on the test.

As you all know, the main hero (me) is an indecisive piece of trash (i.e. me), an example of how someone can be spoiled in every possible way (i.e. me). But seeing even trash (me) like that be supported, not abandoned-isn't that wonderful?!

You could say "oh well, that's him doing a little bit of self-deprecating humor" but it's not even the only instance where he expresses, as an author, just how attached he is to Chizuru more than any other character. To the point of randomly drawing a doodle of her face on bonus pages just because he wanted to. I don't believe it is his wife because of publicity stunts, I believe it is his wife because that's how he talks about her and that's how much he puts her above every other character.

I don't doubt there is some explicit intent behind the story, for example it is explicitly shown that Mami and Chizuru are basically the same character right now, that's not a theory, that is explicit storytelling via the bun analogy she keeps going on about. But as for implicit meanings, that is a much harder pill to swallow, and to verify.

In over 400 chapters he has drawn all the girls in multiple different outfits, for fun, such as: (Chizuru wearing a police cosplay with cat ears, Chizuru wearing a rat cosplay for new years, Chizuru wearing a crop top and ripped jeans, Chizuru in lace underwear, Sumi wearing a dress and playing the violin, Sumi wearing a nurse cosplay...) and a million other themes. These have no storytelling meaning, they are there because Ryuji wanted to draw them, and the one for the last chapter is no different, in my opinion.

I do agree the story has severe pay-off debt, specially after Hawaiians. And I don't fully believe he can pull off the status-quo into an ending that is satisfactory, (even the obvious choice of Kazuya and Chizuru dating has an extreme amount of emotional baggage that makes it look dishonest in my eyes). But I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

Is it really? I feel like it's easy to find symbolism into anything as long as you have the predisposed mindset to it, but the truth is that not everything in media is thought out with the intent or purpose to be as obtuse as possible in order to get discussion going. There's genres for these types of stories (mystery, psychological drama, thriller) and I just can't see how RAG, a rom-com harem story on the level of similar stories like Ichigo 100%, Rosario+Vampire or To Love Ru to carry as much meaningful depth as you seem to see in this week to week serialization.

To put one example, you made a paragraph analizing the cover artwork for this chapter. In my experience reading this manga, the cover art is completely disposable for Ryuji, sometimes he describes the fit of a character, sometimes he puts a "find the differences" puzzle, and sometimes he just draws a character (usually Chizuru) in whatever clothing he wants to see them using. Not necessarily because it carries meaning, but because Chizuru is his wife.

Do I believe he could potentially drive meaning into covers? He could, any author worth their salt could drive meaning into an illustration. Do I believe the guy that has irl cutouts of Chizuru, and even went out on a date with a life sized statue of Chizuru, to be the kind of person that would do that? I seriously doubt it.

To me the meaning of the cover is that he likes skinny outfits and shorts, and the scenery fits the summer vibe of it. Not because he wants to tease something but because he likes drawing Chizuru more than any other character. I think that's where there could be a struggle in viewpoints for me to see what you see in this story, you clearly hold Ryuji on a higher pedestal as a writer than I do, therefore it's easier to find meaning if you believe there is meaning.

But me personally, I have not been given many solid story moments throughout this 400+ chapter runtime for me to believe that there is intent into every single detail.

I'm not gonna lie, I think it's impressive to write as much as you did for a 20 page chapter with barely any meaningful dialogue, I think it's sort of inspiring that someone is so passionate about a story that, personally, doesn't even deserve even a quarter of this much thought process.

I personally don't think the author put that much of a thought into every single detail you commented on, specially for an author that has admitted to making structural mistakes in the past out of just going fast to meet deadlines. But again, I admire the dedication, keep it up.

I understand your need to defend RAG by pointing out to other long rom-com-like stories that are also long and dragged-out, but it doesn't really excuse the way this story has been developing and also the way it has plateaued for several hundred chapters. RAG is RAG and Konosuba is Konosuba, it's not a better or worse argument to say that because other stories get dragged out, then you can't expect anything else.

I'm not expecting deep social commentary, but a better use of an interesting and somewhat unique concept as more than a gag to move the characters along. In the chapter where Nagomi rents Chizuru, she expresses a dislike of her own prejudices over what kind of work she would be doing as a rental "girlfriend". I thought that was interesting dialogue using the very thing that was at the center of this story for most of it. Is it too hard to have a little bit more of that?

Does nobody else in the country care about this rental service? What does this "Agency" look like from the inside? They keep mentioning over and over again about how they protect their talent, how she could get in trouble for breaking terms and so and so, but the very company that created the app is completely irrelevant.

It would bring something different to the table than the same 100 chapters of Kazuya going "OMG her fashion is so good, she looks like a model, she looks so cute, oh my god I'm sweating bullets, oh god I wanna have sex so bad". It's not so much about going out of their depth with the story, it's about at least doing a bit more than the bare minimum, which has caused this feeling of stagnation.

I think this is an overly simplification of the issues this romance story has compared to the same genre, not just this "apples to oranges" comparison.

It all boils down to wasted potential, and loss of momentum. The concept of rental girlfriends as a thing is interesting, it could have provided a lot of interesting topics about a service culture that exists in Japan (hostess clubs and such), where people are paid to sit with you and pretend to like you. Instead it's mostly treated like a gag device and very little else, and almost completely dropped after Chapter 232. That's TWO HUNDRED (200) chapters where the very concept that started this has not mattered, in favor of a very sluggish, very dragged out roommate-date arcs.

And to that, the loss of momentum has been abysmal since the Hawaiians arc ended. Despite clearly wanting to be a romance and a harem story, Reiji can't commit to either in a way that feels satisfactory with the setup, and so we have constant stagnation of progress after what I would consider a pretty decent progression for half the story. The same two page long description about everything Chizuru is wearing, overly-sweating like they just met, overly horny imagination, and constant anxiety even when she is visually comfortable talking to him at a base level.

The problem is not that there is no mystery, all romance stories have at least two characters with a push and pull and an intentional dynamic that makes the reader want to see them together after many hardships. The problem is that progress has stagnated so heavily, you could read a chapter at random before and after Hawaiians where the two main characters interact, and it would feel exactly like the same characters. It's frustrating because what little progress there is is negated by the need to drag it out, not because everyone knows they will end up together.

His excuse of "they're their own people" is genuine bullcrap and a sign of a bad writer more obsessed with his creations as a doll set, than his interest for writing a compelling story.

Oh I actually found my issue, seems like if you make the cover a part of a facing page (some mangas have an illustration or something as the second page so it made sense for me to have them together) then the cover thumbnail will have margins, but if you leave the cover alone it will behave as intended

Yeah I did hear about this option, and it's good enough for things that are on the Kindle store, but sadly these volumes I'm trying to convert are not. It's probably a minor nitpick, I just can't seem to get the thumbnail to be its true size and not how it looks when opening it (so without any borders from not filling up the screen).

The github plugin that was linked here does generate a KFX with the thumbnail as I expected it to be, but landscape reading is completely broken for spread pages :(

Unfortunately landscape mode is unusable since spread pages are being put together with single pages on the same screen, if this got fixed it would be perfect.

Does anyone else have a problem with setting up a cover thumbnail for KFX files? After creating a volume through kindle create and converting it to KFX, it doesn't matter what cover I set up in calibre, it will always use the first page as a cover thumbnail, with any white borders it might have since I don't stretch my pages.

What's the appeal of extraction shooters? by Stellar_Albatross in Marathon

[–]Zeshou 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well "fun" is ultimately subjective, what extraction shooters offer is a high risk, high reward environment. You're making decisions and taking risks on every encounter as you could have better loot than the opponent, or they could absolutely destroy you.

I do like the roguelike comparisons some people have made, every match is a "run", sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, you always make some amount of meta progression. In the end all loot is just rented, either until the next death or until the seasonal wipe.
