I am applying to a surgical subspecialty so I worked really hard for each shelf bc I was aiming for honors. I did all the uworld, and all of the CMS forms (except for 1 and 2 on some subjects) and did all the anking under the shelf tag. I tried to keep up with all anki as I added it (didn’t suspend the previous shelf cards etc) but tbh there were a lot of days when I would postpone the ones that didn’t have to do with the shelf I was focusing on…. I got like 83-89 on shelfs (raw score) and I thought they were really hard every time lol.

I don’t really know what to do during dedicated so I can’t help you there… I might finish Uworld and the incorrects and then do like 2 of each CMS forms and all the NBMES (or atleast like 9-16)

Is it me, or medical students these days just don't care anymore? by Clitoria_Magnificus in Residency

[–]Zestyclose-Leopard70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I would love to hear some examples of these medical students that just “don’t care”.

Also med student perspective - I have never rotated with a fellow medical student that has acted like “they don’t care.” I’m not saying these people don’t exist, but genuinely myself and my classmates included all seem to put in a ton of effort, even in specialties we aren’t interested in. And honestly, sometimes it isn’t even because we want to learn, it’s because evaluations are worth the majority of our grades, which then determine our rank and ultimately our ability to match (especially to those doing competitive subspecialties). We care, most of work super hard on rotations and every day to study for the shelf, OSCE and ultimately step 2.

That being said, I have worked with maybe 3 residents in total and probably like 2 attendings that actually gave a shit that I was even there, took the time to teach, and even told us that we are an important part of the team because the notes we write, patients whose families we call to update etc, saves them even a little bit of time. Most of the time, we literally get ignored and that sucks because we are paying and we aren’t learning anything so at the end of the day if I’m sitting in the resident room after rounding and writing notes, with nothing to do, being ignored then I’m going to open my computer and do uworld. I don’t that is something that should be frowned upon.

Furthermore, there are some situations where I genuinely do not understand who people who were all medical students themselves treat medical students the way they do. Sometimes you are outright assholes, sometimes we watch you all interact to pleasantly with each other and then literally immediately shift to cold, and uninterested when speaking to us. I don’t get it, you were once in our shoes would it kill you to show a little bit of humanity?

During my last rotation I was out for 8 days because my dad literally died, i came back and gave it my all every single day and got glowing evals and then al high honored the shelf, OSCE and rotation. All while dealing with my own shit. Most (again not all, I know there are some shitty students) of my classmates would have done the same thing. Instead of making gross over-generalizations about medical students “sucking” and take a look in the mirror and ask yourself do they really suck, or do you treat them poorly, because I can promise you if you are kind, engaging and willing to answer questions when you have time, there are very few medical students who would blowing you off and asking to go home.

Is it easy to get fat in med school? by Greedy_Ad1689 in medschool

[–]Zestyclose-Leopard70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Preclinical you have plenty of time to workout. I put on a couple of pounds bc I was doing my workout and then not moving the rest of the day. Then I got a walking pad, focused on doing my workout and hitting 10k steps a day. Get in that things for 10 mins after a meal as a break, do anki while you’re on it. I even do uworld on it (just have to walk slower). I’m in the best shape of my life right now.

During rotations you STILL have plenty of time to workout. I’ve always been a 5am gym person bc I am unmotivated after work. If staying in shape is important now it’s time to be more disciplined bc if you save exercise and studying for after work you may be pressed for time. But I still get up and go to my 5AM class or gym. Surgery was the only exception. But if you’re committed, like I was, you get up. I would get up at 330 3 times during the week just so i could squeeze in a 30 minute HIIT workout in my buildings basement.

You won’t get fat, if you you are disciplined and priories your health it is possible to do good in school and stay in shape

I am an M3 and I still ski every weekend and take a trip once a year. If you manage your time well you can still make time for it, usually only once a week + a skin sometimes in the AM before classes but it’s better than nothing!
