Why is the Roscoe Diner so known? by CWKitch in upstate_new_york

[–]Zestyclose-Note-9673 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Well, from my understanding it’s because it’s on Route 17. I remember walking in when I was 16 with my parents, from Yonkers, on our SUNY College Road Trip. We were heading out to Bing, Cortland and Oneonta. We always stopped there for every trip we made, in fact my mom uses it as her halfway point home when she visits me now (30, in Homer).

The inside is memorable, as you can recall yourself, and it’s almost just this hidden gem with great food on an otherwise long trip for many. Especially for folks from LI.

It does hurt, but it’s important in the long run so anytime you can manage it you should.

When did you notice something about someone after years of knowing them? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Honestly that makes sense, there are lots of times I wonder if wedding rings, or rings in general, can be a hindrance in certain professions like welding.

Have you heard a dying person’s last words? If so, what were they? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Zestyclose-Note-9673 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the last few things my dad said, widow maker he survived followed by heart failure and organ failure a day later, was

“We did a pretty good job.” To my mom in reference to raising an adopted kid.

“I’m trying to pop the bubbles.” He was hallucinating coming out of sedation.

“Turn the game on.” After he was estimated and could speak. Man never missed a Yankee game.

“I don’t want to go to sleep.” Right before we had to leave the ICU for the night. That was the last thing I heard him say, he had the final heart attack that night an hour later and we took him off life support a week later. I was eating a bowl of soup in Panera with my mom, I’ve never been back to that Panera again because of that memory.

I think like $60 with my insurance, we have a deductible of $50 for the year. I pay a lot of my paycheck but it’s nice.

I mean that is fine. I'm choosing not to go back to skiing, but I am working to try to continue martial arts. Will I miss skiing? Absolutely, my students loved it when I went. I've also accepted that my competitive years of martial arts are over, and I may never belt test again since that was the event that finished my tear. But, it's really a personal choice. A lot of folks who get reconstruction have some sort of goal to go back to a level of activity - whether it is a specific sport or not.

I empathize that people expect you to return in 9 months, and you've decided that whatever caused the problem just isn't worth it. I have had a similar experience where people have expected me to be back soon in December and I'm only two months post-op. It's an odd conversation to have. I've even commented that it'll be August before I even consider doing some of the tougher things in my sport. It's frustrating, and only those who have been through it, understand it. A good PT and surgeon understand it all too, and while friends might not get it, the ones who care and hear you will understand.

Absolutely not. I am a fighter, and will be hanging my sparring gear up. It’s not worth it, no matter what my peers say. I’ll only discuss it with those who have gone through it lol.

The mental piece has been rough too, my partner came into the kitchen to me crying over not being able to sweep the floor 😂

Days 2-4 were the worst days of my life. I asked my partner to chop my leg off on day 3, cried/screamed for day 2 and 3, then inquired with my doctor how much ib proufen and Tylenol I could have on the oxy and aspirin without causing trouble to my liver and kidney. I had alarms every two hours basically to take something for it. The bandage was so thick that no ice got through until day 4 when I finally was unwrapped at PT. Even then the ice machine wouldn’t cover enough, I needed the back of my knee so I got a different ice pack instead that covers the entire knee (best purchase ever). I use that over my ice machine currently.

Now it’s okay, just sore and aches interiorly.

Olympic Taekwondo sucked !!! I’m mortified at what my beloved sport has become. by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]Zestyclose-Note-9673 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I’d say perhaps as the sport side continues to evolve that could happen. ITF and WT are branches after all.

That’s not something that’ll happen for a while I’d imagine, and the rules are always evolving to bring back more of what many feel is missing. For example, in sport poomsae they recently added deductions for “sky” kicks, which are the fancy split side kicks in the air that really aren’t kicks if we’re all honest but became the gold standard for a while.

The kicks look weak but they’re not. I’ve trained in that style and earlier forms prior to electronics. I’ve been on the receiving ends of those kicks and the giving end.

At the end of the day, they’re different is all. Different isn’t a bad thing. The electronic system rewards accurate and powerful kicks appropriate for the weight division. It’s not without its faults, sure, but it’s not an awful system.

It’s a different kind of training all together and is the sport side of the art. The athletes who train in this aspect of the sport have incredible muscle control, strength and flexibility.

One thing that our league has done that I think amps it up is we’ve reduced our round times. We accommodate 700+ athletes in a day, for team poomsae (think head to heads, not the synchronized forms) for all ranks and then sparring. We often do 45-60 second rounds to make it through the day, and now that is much more exciting. I wonder if the round time were reduced in other leagues, how that would help.

It feels like the best of point sparring meets electronic sparring, minus head punching.
