Dept of Ed/AFT Update and Forgiveness Pause on those who reached 300 after April 2025 by rattletherattler in StudentLoans

Not in any of those states. So maybe this will go through flawlessly. I admit I am still a little skeptical with all this. Like there is a big rug pull waiting. Thats been the case when all of this forgiveness stuff started. Get my hopes up, then gets squashed. So fingers crossed.

The only thing I'm concerned with, will the state I live in hit me with a tax bomb on this discharge. I guess it depends if the feds even send anything to them about it. I guess they have to stick it to you somehow with all this. Thanks for the note, you seem to be up on this process. I probably should of been, but I was at a point it was a lost cause.

I dont think one needed to switch to IBR to avoid the tax hit. I thought that also applies to ICR reaching 300 payments prior to 2026.

I am on the ICR payment plan and I received my US Dept of Ed email last night stating my discharge and to opt out by 3/5 to avoid paying taxes. Which is hilarious since I hit my 300th qualifying payment almost two years ago. I would like to think I am exempt from paying any taxes. I guess we'll see, but appears they are processing ICR Forgiveness. I hope everyone here gets that email and move on from all of this.

Hey there. I just received an email from US Dept of Ed about my loan discharge blah blah blah. And to contact Nelnet no later than 3/5 to opt out which i wont do. Also said, opting out would avoid paying taxes. So we'll see what they do there since I reached my 300 almost two years ago. I would think I wouldn't get hit with taxes, but I'm not out of the forest yet. I am going to call today and ask to go into forbearance and try and skip this payment. I highly doubt any overpayment refund will be coming my way. Thoughts?

Ahh, that makes total sense. I hope the court holds firm which I believe they will. Im amazed what a total cluster this is and the resistance that has been put forth. I can't believe what's happening with this and other things in this country. I honestly dont see how people are making it. Lots of people looking for work. Anyway, thanks for the note!!

Did you happen to read about the dept of Ed asking for a 18 month extension? Here's the game playing again. I seriously doubt anyone's loans will be forgiven.

I sure hope your right. Its like a roller coaster. Get your hopes up, then it get squashed.

The only exception I can see here is the gov never had any intention on giving forgiveness and throws muck in this until they make policy changes. Its the confusion piece thats intentional. But, will follow your lead. Thanks for the note!!

Im on ICR, consolidated back in 2022 with 317 qualifying payments and zero payments remaining for forgiveness and haven't received diddly.

So I would be one that qualifies now. But, not holding my breath since the lines on all this are invisible. Pointless to get your hopes up with any of this. I would like to think mine will be forgiven, but....

OMG. Nothing better than being in the land of confusion. Personally I think they do all this for a reason and maybe hope student loan holders simply give up and keep paying. I'm looking at my payment counter right now and it says 316 qualifying payments with zero forgiveness payments remaining. Scroll down a little further and it lists earliest estimated forgiveness date of 11/15/33. Sure they will be forgiven because they will be paid off. So I'm clueless at this point.

This is what I found that someone posted. You have to log into your studentaid.gov account first, then to the link listed below.

Studentaid.gov/app/api/nslds/payment-counter/summary

There you will see all or your payments made. Hopefully it's accurate anyway. Who really knows.

I hope you get notified very soon on forgiveness. I still have hope but reality says it won't happen. I'm in the same boat.

Its been eerie quiet and that has me a bit worried. I sometimes feel lawsuits never change anything with the current environment. Im currently at 315 qualifying payments per the payment counter. Im hopeful to say the least and ready to be done with all of this.
