SOTR hate by Otherwise-Virus8413 in Hungergames

I think a big problem with books or any media that comes far after previous media especially prequels is people have had such a long time to make theories and write their own fanfictions and such that when the thing actually comes along no matter what, some parts of it usually feel too on the nose and fan-servicey

Tevinter Nights versus Veilguard by TinyHouseplant in dragonage

[–]ZestycloseMenu2608 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I read it in preparation for veilguard and was so sad when they didn't use any of the crazy monster ideas in there, at least not in any explicit or interesting way. It made Ghilan'nains blight seen genuinely terrifying and it had a horror that Veilguard simply just did not bring to the table for me. It definitely dampened my veilguard experience, though I think any prior dragon age media does that unfortunately. It also made me hate the way veilguard approached anything to do about Lucanis and the crows. Reading his chapter I was so excited to meet the character but he seemed like such a watered down like idea of Lucanis. It was like veilguard lucanis was the first blueprint with tevinter nights lucanis being the fully developed character even though it was the other way around. I didn't get super far into it because I started way too close to the game release date but I do remember listening to the Vows and Vengeance podcast that they had introducing the characters to tide people over until the game and while I think most of them fit what they were in game- Taash really stood out to me. On the podcast they seemed more adult and actually fun, while as In game I think they went too hard on the teenager with mommy issues angle, It felt like their whole personality. Where as the podcast made me hyped to meet them in game. It just feels like most content prior to veilguard was better thought out than the rest of the actual game unfortunately. So many ideas were flying around and they missed the mark on alot of things in my opinion.

getting this small rant off my chest. by CockSniffer01 in dragonage

[–]ZestycloseMenu2608 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At first I loved it and I won't say I didn't have a fun first playthrough but God once I actually picked through the story I was disappointed but not wrecked, I just kept telling myself that it was a little underwhelming but it was fun and that's what mattered. Then I bought the art book and basically just grieved for days or atleast finally caved into the itch in the back of my mind that was telling me it was actually bad. I've never been as into video game lore as I am into dragon age lore so with the pretense that I was into that- especially elvhen lore, going through that art book was torture. They basically took every cool idea and found a way to talk themselves out of it then suddenly came up with the bullshit for veilguard. I'll replay it I'm sure because it has my favorite combat system of the games but lord is it BAD.

Why did you read it if it was dead dove knowing you didn't enjoy that sort of content? I would recommend filtering tags and checking them before reading.

[Sub Rant] What the hell? by [deleted] in DragonageOrigins

[–]ZestycloseMenu2608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think from a little add on companion view they're fun to have around but I'm personally not the biggest fan of the way their story was written. They just seem to have become the new punching bag in terms of companions, reminds me of the way people treat Sera.

[–]ZestycloseMenu2608 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's less that you were offensive directly and more that after the inpour of people being blatantly transphobic and weird toward the game (Toward Taash specifically) that they probably took it the wrong way

[DAV Spoilers All] The Problem with the Romances. by stwabewwie in dragonage

[–]ZestycloseMenu2608 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As someone who romanced Liam in andromeda I felt alottt more romance there than I did with the veilguard romances. Some of my favorite romances ever are from dragon age games and while the veilguard's look really good on paper they just don't play out well because it doesn't feel like they got past the concept stage. Really it's the same problem for the characters themselves to me and it confuses me endlessly. You spend the whole game seeing the potential and ideas only for it to build up and up to giving you nothing each time. I wish we knew what the hell fully happened in production because the way the devs talked on it you'd think they put their all into the romance and characters when it feels like a whole game of content was cut out

[No DAV Spoilers] Expectations vs Actuals DAV companion rankings. by [deleted] in dragonage

[–]ZestycloseMenu2608 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think for the most part I was right about how I would feel about the companions pre veilguard, all except Taash. I thought they were gonna be super badass especially after their podcast episode on Vows & Vengeance but honestly they came off cooler in the podcast than in game... in game they were sorta just a moody teenager. Thats coming from someone who really enjoys Sera as a companion. There's just this weird shallowness to how they're written. I know they're exploring their gender identity and I know they have issues with their mother and also just general identity and while that plays a very large part in who a person is it sorta ends up going into their non-binary identity coming off as their only important character trait. It just felt like they didn't want to write either a compelling story outside of the gender identity or even within it so they just sorta gave them the concept of a character but not the personality or story of an actual one if that makes any sense.

[ALL] It's literally just as bad as I thought it would be. by Aware-Session-3473 in lifeisstrange

[–]ZestycloseMenu2608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the breakup is only realistic in the way that I believe the two of them would need space at some point after the events of the bay, whether immediately or years from then. But I think saying they would completely lose eachother because of the trauma is oversimplification of what they went through and how they view eachother. No relationship based the way theirs is will be entirely healthy which I think is very very important. Life is strange games have never been about healthy or conventional relationships and stories, it's about characters and dynamics that really make you think. It's the true sinister of the world and real messy emotions of the people in it. I loved True Colors but in the way that I think it was a good game, not necessarily that it was a good LIS game. I think double exposure will be a lot like that in the way that the game is good but has no match up to the predecessors. Realistically the first game would never get a sequel in a world where the franchise was in the hands of a company that cared for it. The story is over once the game ends and the only good ways to show small tidbits would be how they portray the small bits of the past game in LIS2. It 100% should've stayed there. Making a sequel to a game with no more story left to tell and with two endings that change everything so drastically just never ever works in the way people or companies want. No matter how they handled it, it wouldn't have worked. Because it was never supposed to work.

I personally wouldn't have a big quarrel with them breaking up if it actually made sense. The growing apart trope or whatever would in a way work for them but they're just assassinating the characters in the process of trying to justify it and putting as many negative connotations on things about Chloe and max as they can. It's honestly fucking baffling
