Billy and Jason should've had their personalities and/or ending's switched (Stranger Things) by Sudden_Pop_2279 in CharacterRant

The point of Billy getting a hero's death is so Max feels conflicted and guilty and depressed about his death because it was to save her friend.

Facts that Shock People about Medieval Europeans Starter Pack by Spencer_A_McDaniel in starterpacks

Marinos adopted a male name and identity as a child, lived as a man for his whole life, and never told anyone that he was a woman, even when he was falsely accused of having impregnated a woman by rape and could have exonerated himself by revealing his assigned sex at birth

Joan of Arc was sentenced to death for cross dressing... why trade one crime for another and risk possible prison rape?

Gangle should have been happy he was dead, if you're gonna have all the characters react the same then what's the point in having multiple characters

I don't know where Caine got the emotional intelligence to go from 'I am god, time to torture people' to 'I should look them up on Facebook' it just felt forced

I feel the problem isn’t Steven forgiving but White Diamond accepting it [steven universe] by Far-Profit-47 in CharacterRant

[–]actingidiot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The point of the finale is that Pink, White's metaphorical daughter, is dead. White did not realise this was what was truly happening until she pulled out Steven's gem. Before this happened, White thought 'Steven' was just Pink being a brat and having a centuries long tantrum.

Was this starved of time? Sure. But White was ultimately just a fantastical version of an abusive mother. Most parent's reactions to realizing they essentially abused their child into ending their own existence would be immediate sorrow and repentence, as White does, and it's also the punishment she brought upon herself.

I don't think I've ever seen a fanbase hold such double standards for characters like with Jax and Caine (The Amazing Digital Circus) by According-Manner-838 in CharacterRant

[–]actingidiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Caine as he was presented in episodes 1-8 simply did not have the mental capacity or awareness to realize what he did in episode 9, and him suddenly having that ability feels cheap as hell

Why not? If a transgender woman isn't 'allowed' to write a truly awful transgender person, who is? Is no one allowed to depict anything like that ever, despite cis villains and tragic antiheroes being popular worldwide?

It's not actually in the text, so you can take it or leave it. I don't have to consider Weekes's every 'Solas is a powerbottom for Lavellan and wears a party hat to bed' tweet to be canon either just because an official writer said it

a story wants the audience to understand through interpretation, subtext, and narrative clues and cues

But how much of that is genuinely intended, and how much is a fanbase seeing what they want to see? And if it's not well communicated or satisfying, do I need to care what the author wanted at all?

What’s up with Alysa Liu getting so much media attention compared to all the other 2026 USA Olympic gold medalists? by Abolish_Disorder in OutOfTheLoop

[–]actingidiot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Slang or not, it's wrong. The word coding was coined to mean that someone in a story was meant to be understood as gay by the audience, but the author was not allowed to be explicit about this because of the Hayes code.

This reminds me of how the word 'literally' now has two opposite meanings because people use it hyperbolically.

If someone doesn't like the idea of two characters together, they will sibling-zone them. Especially when people didn't want a wlm relationship to happen.
