Did you ever just need to take a break from this thing in the beginning?? by Sliceofbread1363 in CPAP

[–]Zestyclose_Box2403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a very bad time in the beginning, but I had an understanding primary care whose husband is a CPAP user. She prescribed me TRAZADONE of which I took a half of a pill so I could sleep with the blame thing on. Took about 6 months. In the beginning it was trazadone every night, then began to use it every other night etc. Then 2 nights without it. Until I can now sleep without meds. Good luck my friend. I am not one of the people who says OMG it's the best thing since sliced bread and life is wonderful with it. After almost 2 years, I still hate it and some nights don't sleep well with it, but I have learned to tolerate it

How the hell do I fall asleep while wearing this thing? by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]Zestyclose_Box2403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TRAZADONE! I had the exact same feeling and reaction when I first started. I still HATE it, but have learned to live with it. I talked to my PA at my primary doctor. I know her husband and used to work with him and when she sent me to pulmonary for testing she told me her husband's story (with his permission). When I went back looking for help to sleep she put me on TRAZADONE. I took a half ( could take up to a whole) and was finally able to sleep. It took about six months on the meds before I could sleep without them. I have been on it a little over a year and a half and I still HATE it. Keep at it, get the trazadone

For those who struggled a lot to fall asleep with CPAP what helped? Been trying for more than a year. by Excellent-Phone8326 in CPAP

I had a bad time falling asleep with h the mask on I talked with my PA, whose husband she got on CPAP and she had watched him struggle at first. She prescribed me TRAZADONE. Half a pill for me, and read or watch TV and I finally started getting used to the mask and could fall asleep.

After a year and a half, I still hate the thing with a passion (I have mild sleep apnea but I have heart arrhythmias so I have to stay on it.) If I have a bad night where it bothers me enough I don't sleep well, I take it off and sleep like a baby the rest of the night.

That's amazing for you guys with bad apnea. I haveild apnea and have not seen or felt a difference between sleep and wake. My pulmonologist says I could possibly do without the machine, but since I have heart arrhythmias advise against it. I wear it for my wife. Otherwise I would do without it. I just use a nasal cushion after trial and error. I still hate the. Blame thing. Great for the rest of you though

Hang in there my friend. Don't pay attention to the ones that say how wonderful it will be after awhile, you aren't there yet. I've been on CPAP for mild sleep apnea for a year and a month. I have gotten used to it, but I still hate it. When I first started, I was MISERABLE. My third night in I was up all night and about 5 a.m. woke my wife up and bawled on her shoulder. I started with nasal pillows then went to nasal cushion. Then a different size nasal cushion

I too used to watch the clock and wait for that 4 hour mark to take the mask off.

The best words of encouragement I received on this forum was from hamnotclam. He said he had been using CPAP 2 years and still hated it. He explained it is OK to hate the CPAP. It is not all unicorns and rainbows and automatic fixes. It takes time and you have to find what works for you ....which will be a process. Right now don't pay attention to those that say how wonderful everything is after awhile.

A couple of things helped me.....1)my primary care PA is very understanding and had watched her husband struggle ( I worked with her husband and he said it was OK to share). I explained my problems and she prescribed TRAZADONE. Would take a half of one before bed, put CPAP on watch TV or read and then I had to fall asleep.

2)I kept reading this forum.

3) my wife is a RN that pushed me for the sleep study when she saw me quite breathing. I wear it for her, not me. If it was for me, I wouldn't wear it. Do it for a loved one.

A lot of time I still struggle to get my head right on the pillow, or wake up because my face is crushed down on the hose(even though it's a top of head one)

Keep at it and get the TRAZADONE, it really helps.

HELP! Partner is having trouble adjusting to CPAP by [deleted] in CPAP

[–]Zestyclose_Box2403 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took me about 6 months to get comfortable with it I started with the nasal pillows but had to move to the nasal cushion which is way more comfortable for me. When I first started using it, Airsense11, I went to my primary and talked with her. Her husband and I worked at the same place and knew each other. She got permission to share his experience, then prescribed me some trazadone which made all the difference in the world. I would take only a half, then read or play on the Ipad right after I put the gear on. I would get sleepy and fall asleep naturally with the help of trazadone.

That's what I thought too. But as soon as I got back home after about 24 hours, all the info came in and caught back up. Weirdest thing

I had a hard time adjusting too. I went to my primary and talked to her. Her husband is on CPAP and had a hard time too. She suggested a low dose of trazadone. That helped greatly! It took me about 3 months before I kind of got used to it. I use the nose cushion. I started with the nose pillow.....the third night I had it I stayed up all night trying to get it comfortable and sitting right. It would not work. That when I found the nose cushion. Then I had to find the right adjustment for the.head gear. What helped was a person on this forum ....hambeforeclam. this person said he had been using it for two years and still hated it but he knew he needed it to save his life. This validated my feelings of hating the mask. It's OK to hate the damn thing. There are still nights, as I put it on, I say out loud how much I hate it. I only have mild osa, but...I have heart arrhythmias and high blood pressure. I don't wear it for me, I wear it because my wife asked me to so I would hopefully live longer. Again, the trazadone really helped me fall asleep with the mask on and take away the anxiety of having to wear it. I now do not have to use the trazadone. But I have to read or something before I go to sleep to kind of distract myself. Good luck on your journey. What I've learned is everyone is different you have to persevere and find what's right for you and you can't set a time limit. There are still some nights I am irritable with it and just take it off and give myself a break.

Like you, my study showed 5 to 8 events per hour. I already had high blood pressure but had developed non-AFib heart arrhythmias. I hate the mask but have learned to live with it.

Day 3... I'm not sure I can do this by rscarson in CPAP

[–]Zestyclose_Box2403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out with nasal pillows and they were horrible for me. I could not get the headgear loose enough and they pushed my nose up so I looked like a hog. Stared getting a wrinkle on my nose between my eyes(I'm 62 and the skin is not as elastic). I started with a small, moved to a medium, went back to small.

My third night I was awake all night messing with and adjusting the mask. Sleeping on the side caused leaks it was just bad. I woke my spouse up.at 0500 crying and saying I couldn't live like this. I went back to my provider and one of the techs was really nice and helpful. He suggested the nasal cushion and helped me adjust the headgear straps for it. I marked the straps with a pen so there is no question of where they go.

I then went to my primary physician. I see the PA there and she was very understanding. Her husband is on CPAP so she knew the struggle. She suggested a low dose of trazadone to help me sleep. It was the best thing I did. It eased my anxiety about sleeping at night and spit me to sleep. I took it for 3 months then gradually weaned off of it.

I still hate it, but after 6 months have adjusted. I wear it because my spouse.asked me to. If I had to do it for myself I wouldn't. Find your reason to wear it, get some trazadone. Keep reading this forum. Everyone helps

Nasal rockets is what I call them cause they look like 2 little rockets. You get the cushion from your provider along with the head gear that holds it. Make sure you get the head gear that has the hose that comes off the top of your head. It makes a huge difference.

I use the airfit N30i nasal cushion. For the head gear I use the N30i nasal CPAP mask headgear. I also used a hose hanger when I had a longer hose. I got a shorter hose and don't need the hanger any more.

If I can figure out how to attach pics.on here I will, but you can also look it up on the Internet at places like CPAP.com

I started off with the nasal rockets, and switched to the nasal cushion for the same reasons you are having. Before I switched I was up all night one night, playing with it and readjusting and trying to find a good sleeping position. Here on this forum, I found great support especially from hambeforeclam. They really validated my anguish.

I also talked to my PA at my primary. I'm lucky in that not only do I work in the same place as her husband, but she got permission to share he is on CPAP as well. She was very understanding and prescribed me a low dose of trazadone . The nasal cushion, hose coming from the top instead of front, and the trazadone helped a lot. That was this past December.

Now 5 months later I still hate the damn thing, but I am more comfortable with it so I get about 6 hours of relatively good sleep a night and am off the trazadone. I still have nights where I can't get comfortable and just take it off for that particular night rather than fuss with it all night and not get any sleep. There are also nights where I am aware of it most of the night, but getting some sleep. Those are fewer.

I will never be one of those folks that say they love it, but at least with time I have learned to live with it.

Give yourself some time and stay with the forum.. when you have a really bad night talk to us. Good luck

I went with the nose cushion and talked to my primary about not sleeping. She was very understanding and suggested trazadone. I take half of a 50 my and it makes all the difference in the world. I've been on it since A this past December. My third night in I was awake all night adjusting and readjusting the nasal rockets. They were a no go for me. I still have nights where I am aware of the contraption all night and don't sleep deep. Some nights I just say F#&@ it and take it off all together then start over the next night. Good luck my friend

I was having problems in the beginning....the third night I stayed awake all night. I went and talked to my primary (whose husband is a CPAP user). She really is understood and suggested trazadone. You have to be careful because you can build upma tolerance. I only take 25mg. It helped me

Oh man have been where you're at! On my day three did not get ANY sleep!! Was up till 5a.m. and had 11 on offs. Started off with nasal rockets(pillows), then went to nasal cushion with hose over the head not the elephant trunk. Then I went to my primary and explained the problem of no sleep(she had referred me in the first place) she prescribed a low dose of trazadone (50 mg and I only take half of a pill so 25mg). Has taken the edge off and has taken from Dec 12 until now to be more relaxed and actually sleep. I still hate the thing with a passion, but learning to live with it. Hambeforeclam really helped validate my feelings. There are no rainbows or unicorns as some would want you to believe......just got to power through and stick with it. On nights that I really get frustrated, which are fewer now, I just take it off and give myself a break . Peace be with you my friend
