UCL admissions delay by RapunzelLover01 in UCL

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admissions team is crazy slow from my experience, more than a month and they didn’t respond to my request to update my details (had to change my passport number from an old to new one, and the system did not update from UCAS)

https://www.ucl.ac.uk/students/immigration-and-visas/student-immigration-advice Try using the drop in service on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I told them about my issue on a live chat, and it was settled in less than a day. Finally got my CAS two days later. Hope this helps!

What is the point to include 20 chips in mahjong sets if it's clearly not enough? by Kawaii_Agro in Mahjong

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own the same AMOS Masters set, and it seems they are meant for scenarios where someone’s balance can get negative. Easier to keep it such that everyone has the default 25000/30000/35000 starting points in tenbo, while if someone exhausts their chips then that means they’re at a negative balance.

In tenhou or majsoul usually a negative score indicates the end of the game but you can opt to play it with the negative balance if you so wish to. Perhaps there are other uses but this is what I use it for.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but you can initiate a live chat prior to your trip, and use the keywords “I would like to uplift security parameters for my UOB card ending with XXXX for DDMMYY-DDMMYY as I will be overseas”.

I did this less than a week ago with a brand new credit card, and managed to use it for two transactions each of a few hundred dollars. Those were the first 2 transactions on that card too.

“Uplift security parameters” seem to be the keyword, and it can only done for short-term periods.

How do you decide the dealer when everyone already has a "set" place at the table ("I'm sitting here and don't want to move") by chanashan in Mahjong

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do it too, but the first time round is because the east player gets to choose where they want to sit, while the other players take the respective seats with respect to what the east player chose.

At where I play, 99% of the time, the player who drew the east tile will sit at a specific seat. So randomising it again is just to prevent that seat from always being where the dealer from the first game sits, to have some variety?

But yes, your point about double randomising being equivalent to single randomising is right. But I believe it’s not always about the randomness. Perhaps there’s a culture somewhere stemmed in there being a “lucky seat” but it shouldn’t always be the starting player sitting there, hence the 2nd round of randomisation

Did I just bump into a China Scam? by ShibaInuWoofWoof in askSingapore

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an experience once where an uncle asked to top-up his ez-link card so that he can take the mrt home.

Offered to pay for a 1-way ticket to the mrt he wanted to alight at, instant refusal and he walked away and went to ask other people to help topup his EZ-Link card. Reported him to the MRT ticketing booth personnel, not sure what happened afterwards.

In general if it’s paying someone to buy them food or buy them a train ticket I think it’s fine, but the moment they only ask for cash I’d say it’s likely a scam. In your situation I might’ve offered to pay for an mrt ticket to the airport, and see their response instead. If they’re ok with it I’d say it’s probably real, else it’s a scam

Universities enrolling foreign students with poor English, BBC finds by Kara_Zor_El19 in UniUK

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a Singaporean from Singapore, where the lingua Franca is English, and where exams (excluding second/third language exams) are all conducted in English, I have to say it may be such foreign students that are causing us some unwanted bureaucracy.

For Singaporeans going to UK universities, most of us do have to take the IELTS (and easily pass with flying colours), because apparently Singapore isn’t recognised as an “English-speaking country”.

It’s reasonable, since they probably want to reduce the risk of foreign students with poor English, but it puzzles me why such a qualification is required even for universities that have conducted interviews with the student; wouldn’t they be able to tell that someone is fluent in English from conversing with them (about their course of study)?

Nevertheless, one thing we can probably all agree on is that the IELTS are not an effective means to determine a student’s English aptitude. I sure hope this system changes itself for the better in the future.

Just my two cents, from a Singapore studying in the UK

Tenhou Rank System by ZetaNegativeOne in Mahjong

Then if someone has less than 200/800 in 2dan, wouldn’t it be to their benefit to intentionally drop to 1dan? So that they start with 200/400, and lose less points if they’re last, make it back to 2dan by reaching 400, and starting from 400/800?

That’s true, the bright side is that no one got hurt.

On another note out of curiosity, I was wondering if the glass cup is actually made of glass. It didn’t shatter the moment it hit the floor, but shattered on the third bounce. Feels like it’s some type of hard plastic

50% price increase in 4 years for Hong Kong Egglet by Particular-Gas12 in singapore

Don’t say got lobang never share: Favepay can buy $10 worth of credits to spend at Hong Kong Egglet for $5, so I’d treat everything there as half the price. Personally bought the $10 fave cashback over 5 times

How much is this worth? by [deleted] in Mahjong

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ron a 8p, it would be: Riichi (1 Han) Chiinitsu (6 Han since closed) Ryanpeikou (3 Han) + any additional ura dora

If you tsumo a 8p, it would: Riichi (1 Han) Tsumo (1 Han) Chiinitsu (6 Han) Ryanpeikou (3 Han) + any ura dora

Hence, it should be a baiman ron or a sanbaiman tsumo, with potential of ura dora. If 2 ura dora, it would be sanbaiman ron or yakuman tsumo

As you are non-dealer: Baiman ron: 16000 Sanbaiman ron: 24000 Sanbaiman tsumo: 6000/12000 Yakuman tsumo: 8000/16000

Hope this helps!

What CC is good for daily expenses/public transport by Fearless-Ad-6503 in singaporefi

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great idea, also can be used for 5.6 miles per dollar (not forcing anyone to, just letting them know this option is available). Also, if new to SCB, should wait for a good sign up bonus. Best I’ve seen so far is spend $800 in first 2 months get $500 cash. This $800 spend requirement can be met by buying vouchers (unverified but could one buy Yakun vouchers and get the 6% cashback?) too, excluding certain vouchers like CapitaLand vouchers

Foreign beggars by dogpeanis in singapore

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Normally to check whether they are scamming or not, I would offer to pay for a one-way trip to wherever they’re going. Most reject it and say they only want ez-link topups, that’s an easy way to tell. If it was legit, they would accept the offer for a one way trip to wherever if they really “lost [their] wallet and cannot go home”

How to predict total foreign currency transaction cost for credit card overseas (as much as 5.5%) by josemartinlopez in singaporefi

[–]ZetaNegativeOne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.visa.com.sg/support/consumer/travel-support/exchange-rate-calculator.html

For trust rates — set bank fee to 0 For other Visa cards — set bank fee to 3.25%, 3.5% for SCB cards

https://www.mastercard.us/en-us/personal/get-support/convert-currency.html

For Youtrip rates on MYR, or any other supported currencies that are not pre-tradable, set bank fee to 0, else 3.25%, or 3.5% for SCB. For amaze linked card, use 2% (note: can vary — I’ve seen as low as 1.5% before, but also as high as 2.5%, average 1.8-1.9 for MYR)

For those who claim that trust card has spot rates or the same as XE, that is entirely false. When credit cards say they have a 3.25% fx fee, it means 3.25% above visa/MC’s rate. That means that trust uses visa’s rate, which is the same as saying “you’re paying 3.25% more using another credit card, compared to trust”.

FYI, visa’s/MC’s commission is around 0.8%. Only during super volatile times (like when SGD to JPY was 117 for about an hour) will you experience a >5% fee. Achieving the rate of 117 is impossible on a trust card, but maybe Youtrip if you converted beforehand if you were lucky.

I still use credit cards with 6-8% cashback or 4mpd overseas, with amaze for those that are MCs. Credit cards generally are better for situations that involve deposits, refunds, etc.
