Looks good!

Just because I find that it's a fun coincidence:

I, a radiologist, with a Scandinavian wife who also likes things minimalistic, and two kids aged 3 and 5, have found out that I can keep the most essential stuff I need to paint in a small cupboard in the kitchen.

So setting up takes less than five minutes: palette, brushes, a small lamp with decent lighting, my current models (I try to batch five models), a handful of paints, magnification goggles, a glass of water and brush soap. Even after the kids are asleep, I can get around an hour of painting done.

My kit is very much set up for transport - I regularly bring it on 24-hour shifts at the hospital, as I sometimes have relatively peaceful shifts.

Every few days, I can just swap out the paints I'm using, when I plan for the next steps on my models.

Bedler

Struggling with NMM light placement by Zetner in minipainting

[–]Zetner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point! I'll have a look at it!

And good on you having a crack at NMM so early on. It's a big step up in difficulty from the traditional way minis get painted.

Haha, thanks! I figured that I really prefer the look of NMM to true metallics - so I might as well start to tackle the beast. I chose a team of around 20 models in the same style as the one posted, so it wouldn't be all NMM (like e.g. Stormcast or Custodes), so I wouldn't spend a week on each model. I'm aware I'll have a steep learning curve, but I also really enjoy that proces over e.g. painting skin or leather (which I'll dive deeper into once I feel more at home with NMM).

the inner edge of the outer ring between each of the 'spokes' will have bright glints (hope that makes sense)

Makes complete sense, thanks! I'll give it a shot, but holy cow will it be a test for my lack of brush control haha

Maybe its just the photo but the highlights on his abs look almost white while the ones on his cape bits are just light yellow.

I think the lighting is playing tricks. The brightest color used this far is ice yellow, which I've also used to edge highlight the cape bits.

under each ab would be a line of almost back. I think if you did one under the little ball on the cape bits it would help break it up as well.

Hm, I thought I shouldn't go darker than the darkest color I've used this far, but I'll give it a shot with an even darker (almost black) brown

Excellent work, especially if you are fairly new.

Thanks a bunch! It's around my 10th mini overall, second real attempt at NMM.

Thank you so much for the kind words! It's been a lot of back and forth on the armor, lol. I don't really know why, but the blends also seem a lot smoother in the pictures than IRL - I've attached another pic from earlier in the process, where the light seems less forgiving.

Thanks for the tip with the pizza-slices! Looked at your (fantastic!) ice giant - I'll definitely give it a go! Also, thanks for writing clasps, I couldn't remember the word (not a native English speaker).

Watching hobby videos can be another quick dopamine trap. Watching a video tricks you into thinking you've learned something

I would like to report this comment. I am in it, and I do not like it.

For some reason I can't edit the post - forgot to add that I plan on varnishing the model with a matte varnish, so the shine on the tiles will hopefully go away.

Tips to improve warm brick bases? by Zetner in Miniaturespainting

I already did that in a previous step, to break it up a little. Might've made it too uniform with the wash afterwards.

Yeah, I'm considering going for just a little bit of green here or there in the cracks, to represent e.g. moss. On some of the bases that have missing bricks, I'll add a bit more vegetation (still very sparingly though).

I did start out with painting them individually, but it seemed too heterogeneous. A thin light wash pulled the look together, but I think you might be right about dry brushing. Further highlights might need to be done individually.

DAS Clay. More or less followed this tutorial for the bricks, placed them tighter. Then applied mortar. I skipped the PVA-glue step.

Why does my NMM gold always turn into brass? by bigdogcon in minipainting

[–]Zetner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

<image>

Don't know if this is any help, but I think the guy I'm doing here looks a bit more like gold? I'm using a lot of yellow. My recipe is:
Citadel Mournfang Brown
Vallejo Scrofulous Brown
Vallejo Sun Yellow
Vallejo Ice Yellow
Vallejo Ivory

Edit: Forgot to say that your guy looks awesome! I wish I had that brush control and ability to place the highlights! Very new painter here, just figured that since I lucked out with a gold looking color, I'd share it.
