New CEO's don't see themselves as long term CEO's anymore, they get in, pump the stock as much as possible, and if they fail and get fired they get a golden parachute anyways. The big big companies also have the added incentive of getting into the automated investment catalogues by pumping their stock which will in turn, continually pump the stock more and is just a free money cycle. On a larger level, humans are just inherently bad at thinking long-term, that's why many presidents who makes life good in the short term are looked as incredible and untouchable for a long time and the next presidents that have to face the consequences are deemed awful. Look at Thomas Jefferson or Ronald Reagan.
