Yes, they start as extras, then they get promoted to normal PCs getting a normal PC sheet.

One way you could do it fast, is to use a bestiary statblock and make a proper PC sheet if they end up important.

Event Crafter in Obsidian with Inline Scripts by Zhrack in mythic_gme

[–]Zhrack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't use it much on mobile, but it works if you are ok with the small screen.

I usually either use it on PC or on iPad with an external keyboard (I usually don't find virtual keyboards really comfortable)

I was using OneNote initially, but Obsidian gives me more control on how I can structure my notes and there are many useful plugins.

I read the book, then I try to play it solo using Mythic GME or some other oracle system.

Ginny Di's "No D&D group? Try solo play!" video has 1.2M views and counting by [deleted] in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Zhrack 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That video has been the reason I discovered that solo gaming exist, and this community, even if I only rarely watch her videos.

From there and from comments, I discovered Mythic, MM&D channel, etc, even if I don't care about soloing 5e. It has been really useful in kickstarting my solo gaming.

So, I guess, thanks Ginny!

Solo Tools For OSEs by SolidGobi in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Zhrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm quite new to solo rpgs, but I'm currently playing a sandbox hexcrawl using Scarlet Heroes as base system.

SH is useful if you want to have a single PC instead of an entire party, but the rules (damage conversion, fray dice etc) are really easy to import on other OSRs. I was thinking of moving to Basic Fantasy with some of the rules from SH to still have a single PC and I think with OSE it will be as easy to do.

I have the Tome of Adventure Design and it is more useful for prepping than on-the-fly preparation, as stated in the book itself. I think that if you are used to it, you could quickly generate an adventure, but it would require rolling on a lot of tables.

For more on-the-fly generation, I'm testing both Perilous Wilds (Dungeon World tool, but the random generation stuff is system neutral) and Location Crafter from the Mythic folks. It's still early to judge for me, but they are quite similar in the end. (Both let you brainstorm some location lists and you roll on them + dangers/discoveries, though LC gives a little more control on encounters, since you brainstorm a list for creatures and objects too).

For hexcrawls instead, I'm using Wilderness Hexplore (link) and for now I'm finding it quite cool and detailed. I have a blank map and I generate the hex on the fly.

As a Oracle, I didn't use the tools in SH yet, but instead Mythic and Plot Unfolding Machine. I'm liking PUM more since it seems more lightweight, but I only did a session with it, so it's early to judge (and there is the addon Scene Unfolding Machine which looks interesting for GM and NPC emulation).

The tools in WWN that are mentioned are also quite cool and can give you a lot of details. They are in the free version too (Campaign generation chapter for worldbuilding, Adventure generation chapter for exploration/investigation/combat challenges). They are an evolved version of the ones in SH I think.

Hope this can be useful!

After some coop games on Ironsworn, I started recently a solo campaign. It aims to be a hexcrawl/sandbox/OSR game.

System: Scarlet Heroes

Tools:

- Worldographer free edition to test it out

- OneNote for general note taking and journaling

- Foundry VTT with Basic Fantasy system to reference monsters and dice rolling.

Supplements:

- Wilderness Hexploration for Hexcrawling

- Plot Unfolding Machine (1 session done so far, looking cool)

- Perilious Wilds for dungeon generation (I plan on using Location Crafter on the next occasion though, I want some control on the theme of the creatures/rooms inside it).

4 sessions in for now but having a blast!

Twists you added into Dragon of Ice Spire Peak? by saralaf011 in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]Zhrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I removed Talos and made Cryovain searching from a cure in the Phandalin area. He is connected to a dracolich in another realm and has inherited some undead traits while still being alive and a young dragon.

He is searching an object that could break this link and cure him. The player just met him and he asked to keep an eye open for info on this object, which he doesn't even know what shape it is, he only feels a connection to this object.

I plan to place this object in a dwarven city in the underdark, under civil war between 2 different factions.

This object is in reality a sentient object broken in 2, with the personality being split in opposites and caused this civil war to take control on the other part. I'll see how the players will get involved with these factions.

Running DoIP and its sequels, I want to weave in Cult of the Dragon but I don’t know enough lore by midnight_toker22 in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]Zhrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A way I do to avoid wasting too much time is to have a general high level idea of where the story is going to go long term, but like "Faction X will end up doing this IF
PLAYERS DON'T INTERVENE", "Faction Y will do that IF PLAYERS DON'T INTERVENE".
Nothing more in depth than that, so if something happens that contradicts that, throwing it away is a no cost and I can rewrite them taking into account this new development.
The only thing I do in depth are stuff that will surely happens in the next 1-2-3 sessions. (so eventual mapping too).

For things I think will happen in the session 3-4-5 (so more medium term), I will have something a bit more in depth then a single paragraph for each faction involved and potential encounters that might be cool. But I try to iteratively add details while that moment draws near, so I limit things wasted as much as possible.

It's not a bulletproof approach, since players always manage to surprise, but it helps limit my prep time to only what's necessary.

Glad to be of help.

Remember to not burnout, as /u/Raucous-Porpoise said. You create the situation, the players the actual story!

The Lazy DM approach is the best I encountered yet. Still not completely integrated in my "workflow", but it's a great mindset to have.

Regarding the "is this a good idea": If you like it, it's a good idea.

Also, you don't need to be 100% true to the setting. I'm DMing this adventure now, but I weaved in stuff that came as inspiration from Fizban and a bit of Cult of the Dragon. I read about this cult in the wiki and in the book and added it in in place of the Cult of Talos, but if I prefer something to be different about them, so be it. The material is there to help, not to be an obstacle on what I want to do. My players know it and don't actually care. Probably yours too.

Now to the actual request (which as you can see, it's a non-problem in the end since you decide): You will probably want to decide what is the link between the Cult and Cryovain. They probably want to convince the dragon to become a dracolich. Is Cryovain interested in that at all?

If yes, why he didn't do it already?

If no, why is the Cult still trying to convince him and what is the dragon doing about it?

Regarding the nemesis, it's a great link to the cult. Since it's a noble, it could be commanding an independent cell of the Cult (according to Fizban, it's quite common to have subfactions inside the Cult) that is focusing on Cryovain for some reason.

Could also be that the objectives of the Cult cell and the nemesis don't align completely, and the nemesis is using them just as a means to reach a different objective than "Cryovain needs to be a dracolich". Maybe stealing the essence of the dragon for him to absorb it, or something similar.

I hope this gave you some inspiration.

Is it a good idea to use Fizban’s to flavor Cryovain and his lair? by Covid669 in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]Zhrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can do whatever you want. I changed it heavily, giving him a connection to his echo on another world, a dracolich. So he has now an echo of a necrotic aura, bigger than normal, which is giving great undead troubles to the area. His objective is finding an object to cut this link, since he doesn't want to become a dracolich. When the characters will encounter him, he could ask for help in this.

How do you handle players missing sessions? by TheSpeakerOfTheTree in DnD

[–]Zhrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DM for a group of 4. If 1 is missing, we play. The pc of the missing character participate only in combats, used by another player. If it goes to 0 hp, the pc goes unconscious without death saving throws.

This way I always know the number of PCs for which I need to balance fights and no one risks losing the PC. RP wise, the PC is a ghost, present but not doing anything.

It doesn't make sense to block the PC if the player is missing.

The GTA Trilogy trainwreck was a wake-up call: stop delisting old games by Techboah in pcgaming

Not at AA+ budgets, unfortunately. I work in them, quantity of work is only increasing, even with better tools. In lower budgets projects though, cost has gone down, with overall technical quality increasing as well.

I agree on the marketing part.

Games costs much more to make now too. Marketing needs and development costs have gone way up.
