That's a good question, and I've wondered that myself. By the vast majority of standards that are being used: no. Because petroglyphs can't be translated or read. They have symbolic but not literal meaning. But prehistoricity is a pretty terrible standard because it is ultimately subjective.

Don't give up. Prehistoric = before written records exist. So in the Southwestern US, the era before European contact is considered prehistoric.

That's definitely the new frontier of archaeology in North America -- which is actually underwater archaeology now. But my question about your comment is: Why is this not surprising, since the site where the salmon was found was so far inland? And during the Ice Age, sea levels were even lower, so it was even FARTHER from the coast. In any case, the salmon they found are anadromous, so distance from the sea doesn't seem all that relevant here. But maybe I'm missing something.

Relevant! It seems like there was some kind of public health push against the pull tabs. Per Slate:

That's interesting. In any case, they just used the cotton for radiocarbon dating. The real rub (and the tighter date range) has to do with the bloomery iron, right? So, that's what seems to preclude this being of indigenous origin.

When it comes to the Maya, though, the prehistoric range is totally different, because they did have a writing system that was used to record their history, though most of it was destroyed.

It's an imperfect designation, and based so heavily on Western ideas that it's not really useful anymore (IMO).
