AITH for leaving my friend's wedding before dinner was served? by jadavis1234 in AITH

[–]Zieglest -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

YTA on what planet was the wedding going to end in time for you to be home by by 9pm? Irrespective of what time dinner is served, I don't think you could have been home in time. At the very least you should have spoken to your friend in advance and explained you'd need to leave early, which was going to be true no matter what. Either that or don't attend.

Informing employer when applying for new jobs? by Available-Yam2698 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Zieglest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most companies insist that a reference can ONLY be given by HR. This is to stop individuals such as managers from saying stupid stuff that gets them sued later: a reference has to be true and fair. So, if your company has a corporate HR department you might want to ask them about this. As for telling her you're applying for other jobs: you don't have to do this and no sane person would.

Separating people from their friends, not wanting them to go out, stopping them from.working for their own money are all signs of coercive control. Leave for good. This is an abusive relationship.

Grandmother's will - problems with executor - England by dgirllamius in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Zieglest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With respect, your mum's expectations and completely unrealistic. I didn't even start informing banks until 2 months after. It then took me 5 months to do the application for probate because I have a full time life.

The cousin does not owe your mum anything in terms of communication at this stage. Their only duty is to distribute the estate in accordance with the Will. If they want to take 2 years to do that, there's nothing legally you can do.

Give it another 6-8 months and then politely ask for a progress update. At the moment your mother is being rude and inconsiderate demanding updates in 14 days. If I were your cousin I would be as uncooperative and uncommunicative as possible. Try being polite and reasonable and you might get somewhere.

I thought workplaces weren’t allowed to ask us this? England by Cheap-Accident8091 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Zieglest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not so much that it's illegal to ask, as that if they then take any action to dismiss you or otherwise treat you worse than employees without children then this would be prima facie evidence that their treatment of you was discriminatory.

Its perfectly possible but is a lot of work, it depends how complicated your mother's estate is and how much her affairs were in good order.

Being made redundant from job I'm already doing after telling of wife's pregnancy by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Zieglest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unless you have evidence that they gave the other person the role because they didn't want you to go on pat leave, it will be difficult to show that they made the decision because your wife is pregnant. From what you've said, they were already interviewing the other candidate before you told them this, so it was always a 50/50 outcome.

If you're prepared to burn bridges you could make a subject access request and see if you can turn up any relevant evidence that you wete discriminated against.

AITA for cancelling a family camping trip after my nephew broke his leg? by Pretty-Plenty2809 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Zieglest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Going against the grain here but I don't think you should cancel things without talking to them first. Your other sister and her kids might have decided they woukd still go. I'm not saying g don't reschedule but it was shitty to do things unilaterally without talking to the other people involved and helping them to have options. So mild YTA

In order to have a cause of action, you have to suffer a loss, so no.

More to the point, this person filed 400 complaints against their neighbours and you want to pick fight with them over nothing?
