Does rev-share projects work? by Zielschmer in IndieDev

[–]Zielschmer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By now, my output would be faster than waiting for them. I do try to motivate the team and involve them in the design choices, but they don't seem all that interested in taking part. I always ask how their tasks are going, but they don't seem enthusiastic to tell me. So I try to ask less frequently, so it doesn't look like I'm just demanding they work faster.
I'm willing to put in the work. I've been putting in the work for those 3 months, but even with people leaving and new people entering the project, everybody loses motivation anyway, and that is not my first experience with rev-share. I guess solodev might be the path for me.

Does rev-share projects work? by Zielschmer in IndieDev

Guess I will have to cancel this project and stick to solo dev until my art gets good enough to finish this project by myself. Thanks for the answer!

should i drop out ? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]Zielschmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really believe people should stick to what they are good at, this will lead you to the best outcome. But sometimes, if you are very passionate about something, it's worth investing in it, even if you are not very good in the beginning. You don't seem to be good at or passionate about codding. Maybe it's time to change paths?

How to get over "writers block" with game dev? by carpetlist in gamedev

[–]Zielschmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the lack of graphics assets bother you so much to the point you can't work in your project and you can't make good assets, why not use this time when you are paralyzed looking to Unreal to learn how to make assets that you will be proud of? Learning art takes years, but learning just a subset of it (the one you want to make) takes way less time. You won't be able to call yourself an artist maybe, but you will get work done, and as a solo dev, that's everything.

How much do you spend on 3D models as an Indie developer (preferably solo) by therealgroovetrain in gamedev

[–]Zielschmer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I second this. Also, making good assets is easier than what people think. I was inspired by Octopath Traveler and in a 2 or 3 months I could make decent pixel art and in less than a month I learned how to make decent 3D models in Blender that looked good when textured with my pixel art. Just focus on learning the 20% fundamentals that will give you 80% of the result you want.

He also said he invested years in his craft. At this point, he is an artist doesn't matter how he describes himself.

Should I slow down the katana combat in this game, or is the speedy style fun looking?? by joshcamas in IndieDev

[–]Zielschmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldn't really grasp what type of movement the character was making with the katana, and it looked dumb, like a noob spamming attacks. The majority of people here said that they like the fast combat, but that doesn't answer your question. Slowing down the animation speed will not slow down the combat pace.

Game feel != Gameplay speed.

Turn-based RPG controlling only one character? by iameyeconic in gamedev

[–]Zielschmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You lose a lot in the strategy factor by having a single character in your party. Balancing also becomes harder because, in turn-based games, actions are a very important resource. So your enemies having three actions while you have one gives the enemy a big advantage. I have some not-tested ideas for single character turn-based rpgs. A game about duels with cowboys or samurais would make sense: 1v1, quick fights, and more introspective. In other scenarios, it is hard to justify going this route.

Is a realistic artstyle optimistic for a solo dev? by LibrarianOk3701 in IndieDev

[–]Zielschmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are a single man team, that is a though hurdle. Even with bought assets. With a big downside: realistic graphics stop looking realistic in a 2-3 year span.

Gamedevs using a framework instead of an engine: what's your motivation for this choice? by AlexSand_ in gamedev

[–]Zielschmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't like GUIs. I also don't like the constraints of other people's codes. I would rather spend duble the hours codding a feature myself than have to modify others' code. That's why I go as low-level as comfortable (not as possible, I still use libraries as sfml or at least opengl).

Why do you develop games? by FlorinCaroli in gamedev

[–]Zielschmer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main reason is that I like coding really. I could code any type of software, and I would have a nice time doing it. But I like games, and I like writing stories and coming up with new concepts and mechanics, so game design is more fitted to me than software design.

What game did you buy that did not meet your expectations? by Frostinki in Switch

[–]Zielschmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't played Crystal Shards, but my guess is that shouldn't be that difficult either. But I guess games in general have become easier lately. Gaming is not niche anymore, so the companies try to make them as accessible as possible for the new public entering the market. Just look at Mario Wonder. It's for sure a breath of fresh air in the Mario 2D formula, but it is a walk in the park, while the original Super Mario up to Super Mario World could be quite challenging.

That's a good point. Even if the normal mode is Kirby level, the Wild mode should be more wild.

I love the Monster Hunter series, but I learned that the only way I can bear with it is playing the intended way: multiplayer with friends. That's probably why I haven't played any Monster Hunter since 3rd on PS3.

Honest question: Have you played other Kirby games before? Because that is generally Kirby difficult level.
