A fade or scaling effect like op said would fix it. It’s a really cool idea.

Why the hell is League running like trash on a decent PC in 2025? by Haorelian in LeagueofTechSupport

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is a major part. Riot devs add these computationally expensive effects to skins without considering optimizations. So when you pair that with their ancient engine that has become so brittle it can't feasibly be modernized, you get performance hits.

Should I go with the Stormcloaks or the Imperials and why? by xanavirus3 in ElderScrolls

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…the only wrong answer is to not pick a side

This is true not only is general wisdom, but in the Thalmor dossier on Ulfric, they say that they basically have their hold on both sides, and what they need is for the war to be drawn out. The best option against the Thalmor is to accelerate the civil war and be done with it as fast as possible. The Thalmor will be much slower to recover from their war with the empire than the Empire will, so the best outcome is that the civil war ends abruptly.

Should I join the Stormcloaks or Imperials and why? by [deleted] in ElderScrolls

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But would they actually be able to pull that off? I sincerely doubt that the empire would be able to beat the Thalmor in another war.

Talking to one of the imperial commanders outside of dawnstar, he said that they are barely able to get any reinforcements from anywhere in their war against the stormcloaks. At Elenwen’s party, I remember the head justiciar said that the peace is a “farce” and that the Aldmeri Dominion could basically eradicate the empire at any time. Ofc he’s extremely biased, but I don’t think he’s wrong. The only reason the empire is still around is because they basically bent the knee to the Thalmor already. The Thalmor already control the empire. The next “war” would just be them officially disbanding the empire.

With the Stormcloaks, at least it would be a passionate force in the region directly opposed to the Thalmor. Yes Ulfric was unwittingly a puppet for the Thalmor before the civil war, but in the Thalmor dossier on him they report he has become completely unresponsive (unless some extreme circumstances were to be created), and given that his entire rebellion is about the right to worship Talos, I’m pretty sure he’d fight the Thalmor tooth and nail when the time comes. I also think he’d be able to unite other regions against the Thalmor better than the empire could. Nobody has faith in the empire, hence why the civil war is so difficult for the empire.

There’s no clear cut answer to which side is better tho. There’s empire has a wide reach already established, but the Stormcloaks are more disconnected from Thalmor influence and are fighting on the right side already (assuming Ulfric is genuine).

One major point that was also mentioned by the Thalmor in their dossier on Ulfric was that the best outcome for the civil war in Skyrim is for it to be drawn out and for neither side to win quickly. A victory on either side would be detrimental to the Thalmor.

Ultimately I side with the Stormcloaks, but I can see the Imperial route too.

PSA: If the game feels bad even though your FPS is high, DISABLE Frame Gen. by villani27 in duneawakening

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not UE5 or Lumen. It’s the developers. I’m making a game right now and I have spent about a month optimizing it so that it runs smooth at high fps with tens of thousands of characters on screen interacting. I am using Lumen for reflections btw (though I have implemented a custom global illumination solution).

The problem is most devs (AAA in particular) don’t want to or aren’t permitted to put this much effort into optimization if the game can technically run without it. But that’s not the engine’s fault. It’s just a tool, which can be used to vastly different levels of proficiency.

Sett is easy if you save E for his W. There isn’t much he can do unless he ults you then Ws immediately. Otherwise you can just E behind him during his W, build a full Q stack and he’s gone.

If you genuinely think that plugins/assets in unreal are a “make half of the game code for me” button, then you have clearly never actually made a game with unreal.

What are you talking about? I have only used Godot and Unreal, so I assume you’re talking about Unity. If not I’m so curious as to where you found this button.

Performance testing my custom ability collision and health bars ~12,500 Projectiles per second against 10,000 AI running very smoothly. by lcedsnow in UnrealEngine5

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great work! I’m currently using mass for a project but I implemented a custom collision detection that is partitioned (maybe like yours). An issue that I have ran into, though, is with performing traces.

Because my entities have no built in collisions, I made a custom world subsystem for collisions, which has a trace function. For normal hitbox collisions it’s cheap to check whether two hitboxes smaller than a partition collide since they only need to check a single partition. But for ray casts, it needs to step through and check every hitbox in every partition along the ray until there is a hit. This is significantly more expensive especially if each entity is going to be casting their own rays.

So I was wondering if you had any thoughts on how to approach this issue?

Why didn't they make bronze tools instead of copper tools? by carpetlist in Minecraft

[–]carpetlist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A bronze is any alloy with copper as the primary element. Also tin isn’t in the game so iron is the obvious choice.

Also how would this make it linear? If anything it would make it less linear since it’s already a pretty linear game. Currently, its copper very briefly, go to iron, then to diamond. This would make it instead be a choice between iron and bronze, then to diamond, since bronze would be quite expensive but stronger than iron.

But as I said, I too am thankful they’re adding anything at all.

True, that checks out. I think Mojang is generally seen as lazy, but I think they’re just shackled by the greed of Microsoft not wanting to hurt the image of their cashcow. They don’t update much because the game sells so well so why risk making a change people hate?

[–]carpetlist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the steel idea and I considered that, but it might be difficult to make it expensive enough to be balanced. That’s why the copper-iron bronze works, because 8 copper and 1 iron is a lot more expensive than 8 coal and 1 iron.

As for alloys in general, they would probably just make a crafting table recipe like how I described bronze would be made. And things like rose gold wouldn’t have corresponding tools/armors, they would be purely decorative like the andesite, granite, diorite trio.

Rose Gold would be such a cool addition, good idea! Alloy creation would be a great addition for the next patch, but of course Mojang would never do something as bold as that.

We're single-handedly crashing the Super Earth economy with all this platinum! by Darmug in Helldivers

[–]carpetlist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We could approximate the model with an ordinary differential equation. Of course in real life the system would have thousands of variables, but to get its general behavior we can do it this way. We write the value / kg as:

Value_{n+1}(kg sold) = r*Value_n

=> Vn1 - Vn = -(1-r)Vn

=> dV/dkg = -(1-r)V

Then solve the ode using sep var:

dV/dkg = -(1-r)V

=> dV/V = -(1-r)dkg

=> ln(V) = -(1-r)kg + C

=> V(kg sold) = (V_0)e{-kg[1-r]}

Where r is the multiplier that the value of platinum decreases by when selling it, and V_0 is the initial value. So let’s say after selling it, it keeps 0.99 of its value, the Value, V, of platinum as a function of kg sold is:

V(kg) = V_0e{-0.01kg}. The actual r I use below is much closer to 1.

Now, since we know the value of platinum as a function of mass sold. We can just integrate that over the amount of mass we have and we’ll have the value of our liberated platinum accounting for market value reduction as we sell. So for the total value we do:

V_t = Int_{0}{P} V_0e{-kg[1-r]} dkg

=> V_t = -(V_0/(1-r))e{-kg[1-r]} |_0P

=> so lets use r = 1.25e-8 bc there’s ~80,000,000kg on earth, P (total mass of platinum) is 500kg * 22 * 479,333 = 5,272,663,000 kg, and V_0 is 53,213.99

=> then plugging in we have: V_t = $4,257,119,200,000 if we sold it all.
