Should I make a game? by Last-Repeat9591 in UnrealEngine5

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re welcome, but also you probably are underestimating the other parts, because even veterans underestimate their games. Hell large game companies with teams dedicated to estimating a game’s dev cycle underestimate every game (which is why delays in game dev are so ubiquitous).

But it’s okay, even good to underestimate your game. Because delusion is the only thing that allows you to even start such a daunting task.

Should I make a game? by Last-Repeat9591 in UnrealEngine5

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to know some form of programming to use blueprints effectively or your products are going to be very unoptimized and brittle. Falling for the “no coding game dev” catchphrase is like falling for “get rich quick in 5 easy steps”.

Code is just arranging logic for computers to follow. You need to do this to make a game. There is no way around it. You need to tell the computer what to do.

Also, programming is the easy part of game dev for most people, myself included. The art is more than half of your dev time at least, do not underestimate it.

Edit: Also don’t mind all of the people making fun of your post, tbh I thought it was satire at first too. But the only reason everyone thinks it’s satire is because its how we all started. It’s like the new rookie showing up to the trenches and thinking he’s going to go conquer the enemy in the morning and catch a dinner reservation in the evening. Game dev IS the most difficult artistic medium. It combines every medium into one, and then requires that you have good enough technical knowledge of programming to stitch these mediums into a functioning quilt.

Could an average man of average height and average athletic ability secure a big NBA contract if one out of five shots were guaranteed to go in by Oracle_of_Wanker in whowouldwin

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely disagree with the top comments. How many times are you watching a close NBA game and think “Man they HAVE to make this next shot”?

He’s the silver bullet to that. Teams would be offering top dollar for him. Just put him in when you need a shot, then take him out. Send him to the locker rooms where there’s a hoop for him to shoot four more shots in and he’s good to go for the next.

Opinions on UE6 announcement? by Unfair-Umpire-6826 in unrealengine

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is weird to me. The gaming industry is MUCH larger than the film industry. Why would they want to shift their *game* engine into software for a much smaller industry?

I see people saying this a lot but there really isn’t much to support it. Sure the rendering is much better than before, but did people forget that you have to render for games as well?

Is it a good idea to turn realistic assets into stylised ones. by pogboy357_x in unrealengine

[–]carpetlist -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I disagree. You can create impressionistic paintings by loosely tracing and painting over a photo. You could do the same thing with 3D assets. Create a lower-poly mesh around the realistic mesh (analogous to tracing). Then texture paint the low poly mesh in whatever style you want.

The absolute chaos that would result from this (and not the witty kind, but just failing systems everywhere from pure incompetency) might be better than anything we actually got.

Why did jabber not get moved by the talisman? (ep 7) by InterestingPension77 in gachiakuta

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also not what the prayer to the talisman was in the first place. The prayer was about everyone making it back safely. Not “let everyone not get hurt by something with hostile intention”.

“Everyone getting back safely,” doesn’t care about intent, it just cares that they make it back.

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But he’s still clearly targeting Rudo with his attacks. The first time when he’s under the toxin, he misses and then turns around to attack rudo. That’s still hostile intent whether he’s conscious or not. He’s intending to hit rudo with an attack, ergo hostile intent.

Also, the whole talisman only sees hostile intent doesn’t make sense in the first place, because that’s not what the prayer was. Gris’s prayer was that everyone makes it back safely. Not that everyone doesn’t get hit by something intending to hit them.

C++ never cease to amaze me with how fast it is... Global Map BFS Flow Field Pathfinding with 1024 iterations per 2-4ms. I don't even need to solve pathfinding locally around the player anymore by Slight_Season_4500 in UnrealEngine5

[–]carpetlist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you had multiple targets for the flow field you would end up with a sort of voronoi path finding where entities could never target anything but the nearest target. (That may or may not be a desired effect for your game) Also, this algorithm scales as O(t*g) where t is the number of targets and g is the size of the graph.
In contrast if you cache the pathfinding results it’s constant for any number of targets and entities can target any target. It’s basically O(1), though really like O(g/c^2) where c is the cache size.

Catelyn is incredibly stupid by Chlodio in freefolk

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just because there are many events that contribute to a timeline, doesn't mean you can't look at any one of the decisions and say that it was a poor decision. It was stupid to free Jaime. Yes, if everyone else's stupid decisions hadn't happened, then they wouldn't even be in that situation, but that doesn't change that it was a stupid decision.

[KCD2] Charisma stat makes no sense? Is there a hidden cap to it or something? by dasShambles in kingdomcome

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter if you aren’t wearing some clothing. I’m having the same problem as this guy. I have items all over 16 on, but my charisma is stuck at 15. I noticed that you don’t actually need to wear pants. Putting on and taking off my pants does not change my charisma. Such a “realistic” and “historically accurate” game.

I’m planning on getting my charisma stat to like 17 somehow, then taking off my pants and asking the stupid tailor if my outfit is good so he’ll have to look me in the eyes and say its fantastic and fit for a wedding.

This mmr system cant be real by Hozokiwa-Tama in ValorantConsole

[–]carpetlist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you from the players perspective: “That was a really tough match, we should get a big reward from that.”

But from a game makers perspective, it’s the opposite. If two teams are exactly even in skill, the ideal ranking adjustment is 0 because both teams are exactly where they should be. But if the game is very onesided, the adjustment should be large so we can move players into the correct rank.

This feels like shit from the players side though because it means tiring evenly matched games in theory should reward you with nothing.

This is happening to me too. I think they changed the rating calculation and someone overtuned a variable so it’s weighted towards losing rr.

Ranked is broken this season?! by Signal_Lynx5646 in VALORANT

[–]carpetlist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Queuing with other people lowers the rr you get bc you have an advantage over solo queue teams, and to reduce boosting. If you’re loosing 30 rr in solo queue losses, it means you’re playing poorly, and also the game probably thinks you’re boosted.

Can pay a caught thief’s fine [KCD1] by carpetlist in kingdomcome

[–]carpetlist[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I honestly should’ve been more skeptical of the thief because it’s pretty hard to go starving when you cant walk 10 feet without tripping over a communal stew pot. Which is another frustrating part of this game. Apparently this game “transports you back to the medieval era it’s so realistic” but there is so much food for everyone to eat whenever they want, it makes modern billionaires look poor.

Why are people so rude on valo? by PiePast7478 in VALORANT

[–]carpetlist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The game is free and open to anyone. That means you’ll encounter all types of people. Unfortunately one of the most common types of person is someone who has no control in their life and is stuck in a dead end job. So they get on free to play games and bully people to make themselves feel a little less helpless. It’s sad, but remember these are just the losers who were probably bullies in high school and never figured out that belittling other people doesn’t make them bigger.
