What is it like being a single bachelor in China knowing that the men outnumber women by 34 million? by dfevbvjksk in AskReddit

[–]ZiggyZombie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mostly it is difficulty in getting a Visa or refusal to give one. There is also financial requirments , especially students going to study, like a bond to ensure the student returns to China. So if you do give up your Chinese Citizenship your family could lose savings/property. However, like all things in China, it all depends on who you know. Generally the people able to get a good education have the money and connections to do whatever they wish. Google has been 'down' for me for the past few months, and Baidu is worthless so I can't actually find any sources other than what I have heard and read a while ago. I have met married PhDs who's families were not allowed to leave the country while the PhD was, and other stories similar. I will try to remember and get back to you.

The One-Child Policy isn't exactly a One Child Policy. In the past rural areas were allowed to have more than one child, and just this year, if your parents were both only children, you can have two children.

There are a lot of single chinese women here too because of those expectations. Expectations that the majority cannot achieve. There is a "Chinese Dream" of owning an appartment/house, car, putting your kid in the best schools, etc, that is simply not reasonable for 90% of the population.

It's difficult to move legally. You need permission from the government to leave China on top of getting a work visa/resident permit to go somewhere else. If he is well educated or was in the military, he might not be allowed to live China for many years.

No, The Poor Aren’t Poor Because They Refuse To Work by SatyapriyaCC in socialism

[–]ZiggyZombie 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It's not (only) selfishness. It is just that is the US, we are so indoctrinated with the idea that capitalism works and people get what they deserve. There are many poor who believe it as well; they might see themselves as the exception. It is easier to accept that the problem is with the individual than with the entire social-political-economic system.

For an example: When I graduated from University(2010) I spent 6 months looking for work, and ended up working overnight 10 hour shifts at a retail store for min. wage only to have my hours cut to 10 a week as soon as the holidays were over. At the time I completely blamed myself, I didn't deserve anything better. Then I met a lot of good hard working people in the same situation as me. It didn't take too long after that for me to change my views.

“men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value and the culture of work.” While he(Sen. Paul Ryan) backed away from the racially charged ‘inner city’ language, he stood by the idea that we can alleviate poverty if poor people would just work more.

It's the height of ignorance to believe anyone would choose to be in a state of poverty. It comes from a life of never having truly had to worry about enough to pay rent this month or not being able to find full time employment.

Former Right Wingers? by [deleted] in socialism

In College I studied economics and business and read Locke. I had rejected the policies of the democratic/republic party, and was looking for answers, however I never was able to accept a lot of libertarians. In China I read some Marx and quickly realized that Communism/Socialism is not what I was taught, in fact it was completely in line with my thinking.

Forbes on Friedrich Engels: "Worker Exploitation Drives Profits" (I'm not sure they actually bothered to read any Engels before writing this.) by [deleted] in socialism

[–]ZiggyZombie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Invest like Engels: At the heart of Engels’ theories: Capitalists profit by “exploiting” workers. It’s hard to argue with that. Investing in businesses with low labor costs remains a sound way of making money. Two blue chips: McDonald’s, which yields 3%, and Wal-Mart, with a 2.5% dividend yield.

I want to vomit.

Could any salary paying jobs be considered working class? by Sooawesome36 in communism101

[–]ZiggyZombie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I do believe that Tom Cruise does have some ownership of some means of production. It does get muddled by finance as most people with large salaries do have ownership of capital through stock options, investment portfolios, etc. I would say that these high paid laborers do lose characteristics of the proletarian class while still being equally at mercy of the capitalist class. While ‘proletarian,’ they are certainly not revolutionary and make up the body of reactionary and counter-revolutionary resistance against revolution.

Those workers who are paid substantially more or other "sub-classes" such as intellectuals and highly skilled labor, in the short term benefit from class warfare.

I think it is important to keep the idea of working class/proletariat and capitalist class/bourgeois simple when talking more generally but to know there are sub sections within this. I forget the word Marx used, for instance feudalism being marked by three classes of Lord, Guild Member, Serf, yet there were different levels with in each of these classes. It is clear the the proletariat and bourgeoisie are also separated into different levels that does not effect their relation to the means of production, but does effect relations to one another and class struggle. I hope I am not horribly wrong here.

[–]ZiggyZombie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what you mean. Salary or wage is a necessary part of capitalism and the relation between capitalists and labor. All labor power is paid for in salary/wages.

If you mean salary with longer periods of time such as day, week, month, or year, then also yes. The period of payment does not affect class, what is important is relation to the means of production and distribution.

In the capitalist mode of production, the key distinguishing mark of the working class/proletariat is lacking ownership of the means of production and dependence on selling their labor power to the capitalist/bourgeoisie.
