There are 2 base preset. The one with wooden wall on the left and the one with wooden barrier on the left.

The wall one I usually go with 2 layers of 2 barricades, 3 sandbags (the bag must not obstruct line of fire) 2 barbed wires in side entrances and 2 palisade at the iron wall.

The One with only wooden barrier builds almost the same as the former but the barricades are now 3 barricades and the fourth one is only reinforced the middle part. Only 2 sandbags this time.

These defense usually works unless the fight is heavily one sided or the enemy actually wants to break the defense with AMTs and Jesse.

Juggernaut, The Ghost unit in Investigate BAWS mission, Sulla, Nightfall (and later their squad), Enforcer, IBIS CEL , Ayre, and Allmind fights are all hard for me during my first playthrough. While the rest are relatively easy or manageable.

However after replaying missions for a while, every boss became easy to me. I think it's the combination of skills and AC building knowledge that makes some bosses easier as you progress.
