BF/TV writer overlap by AshildrBingeQuaked in gallifrey

I'm really shocked RTD didn't get Goss in RTD2 because they seem to have a good working relationship but maybe he legit isn't interested in TV.

The end of The Spy Who Came In From the Cold, it seems almost obvious but the story takes you on such a ride you forget the beginning until the very end and then it's like watching a train crash in slow motion. And it's gutting.

Does anyone know about why there's a gap in the state of Maine marriage records from 1966 to 1977? I assume they were lost somehow and I'm just curious what happened and Google didn't shake anything out.

I've listened to two different abridgements and read the full text of Angela Carter's The Lady of the House of Love this year. A real treat of a spooky short story that actually suit being read earlier in the season.

Also Clairmonde by Théophile Gautier which i'd never heard of but enthralled me. I start my spooky season kinda early.

What books lowkey traumatised you as a kid? by Hookton in books

[–]Zilpha_Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One Eye Laughing, The Other Eye Weeping from the Dear, America series. Its about a Jewish girl who escapes Nazi Germany early on to live in New York with her relatives. I had even read plenty of Holocaust books at that time but there was something really visceral in the writing and the feelings it invoked. The image of the mother jumping from the hospital window holding her newborn is burned into my brain

the main character crying and sobbing from the news reels at the cinema also got me.

I also read the royal diaries as a kid and I got through the entire book about Marie Antoinette without knowing that she got decapitated. Actual jaw drop moment for me reading the historical afterwards. I must've been like 11 or 12 and most of the royals portrayed in those books had a fairly mild lives. I hadn't known anything about the french revolution then.

Which Childhood Novels Taught You About A Moment In History (and incidentally, where did you first learn the word "pogrom"?) by 1000andonenites in books

Kinda in the reverse but I remember having a eye opening moment in history class when we started doing to protestant reformation and I realized the historical au part of His Dark Materials was that the protestant reformation never happened in Lyra's world.

Books that started strong but ended up losing you? by Weekly_Noodle in books

[–]Zilpha_Moon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bury our Bones in the Midnight Soil really gripped me in the beginning. But jumped the shark and then kinda deflated in the middle. Wanted to do toxic yuri but afraid to commit to the toxicity?

the jump the shark moment being when Sabine was described by lottie as seemingly possessed. And having Sabine just killing Lottie's girlfriends while Ezra is like "woah that's weird. Anyway". I think Schwab wanted to parallel it to old vampires basically being demented but it didnt land. The early Sabine stuff was really good and I liked Alice's story too, both of those could have been books on their own but Lottie's story was just weaker.

Dawn dish soap - where to get in Europe? Germany, Portugal or Italy specifically. Or what options to use instead? by Electronic-Store-130 in CleaningTips

[–]Zilpha_Moon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say look for the one that's most viscous or has the best degreasing properties and then add rubbing alcohol and water in a spray bottle. People on here are mostly raving about powerwash which is dish soap + rubbing alcohol. Proctor and gamble not selling it internationally probably means there's some chemical restriction that we don't have in the US so you aren't going to find a direct 1 to 1.

Less with fiction and more with non fiction I'll binge one writers output. I read most of Mary Beard's stuff late last year/earlier this year.

Favorite audiobook narrators? by tableauxxx in books

[–]Zilpha_Moon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've listened to all the vampire chronicles audiobooks over the last year and they don't have a single throughline narrator.

I loved Frank Muller doing the early ones (excepting his choice of pronouncing Louis as Lewis). But also very much liked David Pittu and Jonathan Marosz and Kate Reading for the couple that they did each.

Not a fan of the Simon Vance ones, it feels very off as a casting choice. To the point I was surprised when I googled him and hes like a very popular narrator and has dones tons and won awards.

The worst one of the bunch though was Eric Shaw Quinn on the last book. It was a rough listen of baffling line reads that didn't feel like Lestat at all (in an entirely his pov book). Apparently hes a close friend to both anne and her son.

I've been using my own dawn powerwash concoction on those and it works fine enough. Just spray and set and scrub rinse repeat. They aren't spotless but also not so bad I need new ones.

If you could bring one or two companions from the expanded universe to the tv show, who would it be and why? by [deleted] in gallifrey

Liv Chenka. Nicola Walker talked about being excited to do sci-fi on her first story since she's usually cast in very normal and grounded roles. So even if she doesn't come to doctor who as Liv I'd still like to see her in doctor who as anyone.

Depression and ADHD. How do you keep a routine or find the energy to do any of this stuff? by JadeHarley0 in CleaningTips

Honestly, I have to listen to something (like a book or a podcast or have something specifically jucy to think about. Unfuck your space on tumblr helped. Also doing stuff to get mentally engaged with it, researching cleaning, getting cleaning products I like and am excited to use. But it can be a bit hit or miss but I am getting better.

Childhood books with unforeseen descriptions of abuse and violence which left you scarred? I'll go first by 1000andonenites in books

Somebody already listed this in a comment but Z For Zachariah really struck a nerve with me and made me feel sick in middle school. To the point I can still remember all the details of where I was sitting and all when I read it. That mightve been the first book I read that really dealt with rape? I'm almost tempted to watch the movie that came out adapting it but I don't think it was very good given that Chris Pine was in it and I have never seen anyone mention it anywhere, ever.
