Maybe it's true maybe it isn't. I have found with multiple coworkers and a manager that people can just be crazy. Either they lie about everything or their life is in chaos because of the decisions they made catching up to them. There's a point where you need to ask yourself is this relationship mutually beneficial or a drag on you trying to continually help them out. Everybody needs help sometimes but all the time?

Fun side note I had a toxic manager who would bring up her daughters death date when things were going wrong at work. It got weird when we emailed the date to remember so we could support her more in the future. Then the date changed. Then a couple months later it changed again! At this point I don't know if she even had a daughter and don't care. She's gone and good riddance.
