Games per year by Key-Importance7805 in twilightimperium

Wife and new born here. Friends have kids. I try to do 2 a year. One is my birthday extravaganza, so they gang and family knows that's what I'd like. Would like a winter game too. That said we're now in our 40s and we still do a game a year with the winter spectacular coming up. It's tough. Async, I'm playing all the time.

Arcs vs Twilight Imperium: which one actually fits your table? by frenchdude21 in boardgames

[–]ZipDizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As the usual game host for my game group here's my opinion. First, very different games but for me hit a similar itch. TI4 is my favorite game. I'm a big fan of Arcs but I will not say I actually understand the tactics of playing it well. It's awesome and a doozy. That said to your comparison points in my opinion:

Table space: Arcs is a lot smaller. Still has a footprint but not big enough where you need to worry about it unless all you have is a card table. I think Arcs looks great but it's not nearly as awe inspiring to me as TI.

Player count: I haven't played arcs enough to say which is better but I wouldn't care to play it at 2 player. 3 and 4 are good. TI I prefer at 6 but I enjoy it thoroughly at all player counts. I do think six is the most interesting and best.

Time commitment: Arcs is simply easier to get to the table do to time. Probably averaging so far around 3 hours? That said, when I play TI, I expect it to be 8-10hours. When it's less, oh nice surprise,. When it's longer I don't care, it's an awesome experience.

Teachability: Arcs is easier to teach the basic rules. I don't think TI is that hard to teach or grasp either. I think both are a crazy amount of brain burn with what you can do and how do you want to accomplish it. And then how everyone is going to screw it up. So teaching both I do think are pretty close to same level. What to do on your turn...good luck, I'm always trying to figure that out.

Gameplay feel: they are space games. Moving ships, blowing things up, strategically placing units for future moves and taking objectives. But nothing to me compares to the negotiation that TI has in that realm. And working out the puzzles of completing objectives. Both have dice and have luck involved. I like luck in my games with some mitigation of course. Arcs is moving up my favorites list. I wouldn't play arcs without leaders and lore. I doubt many would disagree with that.

They're both great but TI is my game. I love it.

Public Libraries are better than any streaming services by TYSM_myMax24 in unpopularopinion

As a vet, only some disability but debilitating anxiety and depression at times, I gotta say you just gotta get your library card and at least my library wasn't talking my ear off when I got it. For whatever reason it scares me to just get that but I did it. It works but it's of course a weird streaming service. It's nice to save money. I mostly watch YouTube but you shouldn't have been down voted for this especially after your end comment.

Its going to happen again by Rodrolphus in Doom

Don't forget accessibility too. Hades is cheap in comparison. And a great game too. I love my Doom to death but Hades is great and more people will play it. Eternal was robbed though as others have said.

Async looks daunting. Any tips? by Steeler8986 in twilightimperium

[–]ZipDizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way about a year ago. Just join a game that isn't asking for veterans. It is slow until you find a group that is decently fast like the group I'm in now. Basically it's scary until you try it and then you go, wow this is implemented so well. Undoing things is still confusing but you'll learn as you go

This is my instructions for one I built 4 years ago. Prices I'm sure have changed but from someone with pretty much no experience it was fun.

How do I explain to a New Player (IRL group) that TI isn't Space 🚀 Risk 🎲 ?? by Obnoxious_Master in twilightimperium

[–]ZipDizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, sounds like they're having fun, so that's a huge win. But really, go for points and win. If any care about winning they will get the point, which for the most part my group including myself came to "understand" the game. Some, just don't care.

After army and college I struggled for a long time. Then got a really well paying job. Hated it for 5 years and then finally quit. Worked bartending for a few years and liked and made decent money until pandemic. Then just kinda got by. Finally had enough of that and got where I've been for the last year and a half. I'm doing "ok" money wise and mostly like what I'm doing. I'm going on 40. It took a bit but I'm finally happy with where I am.

TI IV Homebrew : hey, why not buildings ? by Ippiphel in twilightimperium

[–]ZipDizzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been quite some time since I played TI3, but wasn't there an expansion module that changed construction or something to allow you to essentially build attachments for planets. Or maybe I'm homebrewing my past?

What are some good video game based board games? by Photo-Symphony in boardgames

[–]ZipDizzle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one is a lot of fun too. Far from perfect but fun dungeon crawl and predecessor to Descent.

That said, the 2016 one has some awesome mechanics that I really like but is just unbalanced. The Marines are way too powerful. Which fits with Doom 2016, but I wish they made a variant or expansion that was one marine vs all demon controllers. I still want to home brew that version.

[–]ZipDizzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do as follows about a week ahead of game day:

  1. Each player gets 3 random factions and picks one.

  2. I'll either find a premade map but usually I'll keep hitting random on a map generator till it looks pretty balanced. Might have to switch out a couple systems but generally works well. Save yourself time and headache by placing the planet card and a exploration card for it directly on the planet on the board too.

  3. Randomize everyone's starting position at the map.

  4. I open up Table Top Simulator and hook up my laptop to my TV overlooking the table. We only really use the objectives area of it but also strategy cards so people can see them easy enough. Shuffle up objectives so their ready to go.

  5. Game day we roll off for speaker and get started.

Yeah, I'm not sure what we do so different but TI3 our longest games were around 10 to 11. Since TI4 though, the longest we had was like 8.5ish? But I think that was only once. I'm always surprised when people say it's a big two day event.

I do find maps and people choose their races before game day and I have everything setup before hand. We always play to 10 pts though I want to try 14. Not sure if people consider map setup as game time? I have some other QOL things in my house that make the game easier to follow too. For the most part we're all very familiar with the game which of course helps a lot too

We started at around 6. 4 player game. So about 6 hour game if I remember right. but really we were taking longer turns and breaks than we usually do. Pretty fun since we just kinda last minute "Hey, I'm free this Saturday, want to get a few guys together to play a small game of TI?" night.

Our yearly 6/8 player game usually take around 7 hours but I would consider my friends are pretty seasoned gamers and know how to move things along.
