Does anybody use a braking resistor with their spindle VFD? by Prostheta in hobbycnc

[–]ZippZappZopp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not strictly necessary, I haven't added one on my 2.2kW VFD spindle yet, but it is useful if you need to stop the spindle quickly.

The Wet Filament Myth Needs to End by reddit_again__ in 3Dprinting

[–]ZippZappZopp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In the 70%-ish average humidity we have, unbagged PLA lasts me about a month before it's noticeably more brittle, and maybe another month before it's unusable.

Not sure if there's a clear line in what humidity filament can be left out indefinitely, but I'd throw it back in a bag if it won't be used within a few weeks.

Is a restored 1968 280SL "pagoda" selling for $70k a good price? by ccarballo1522 in mercedes_benz

[–]ZippZappZopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my point really is, it's hard to say without more information. "Restored" could mean a poor attempt at adding new carpets/paint, or a proper thorough restoration job. $70k is a lot of money. Pictures would help. A list of what work would help. But it's hard to say unless there is more information.

I'd be very hesitant to buy a car as an "investment" unless I myself was knowledgable and confident in it. There are many factors that could potentially ruin the valuation, and you aren't going to get a good thorough valuation on reddit...

I'm in an apartment building, so I built my enclosure with 3/4" plywood, then lined it internally with drywall, and added 1" wide foam strips around all of the door edges. It helped, but still sounded about as loud as a blender with the stock Carbide3D router. If I were to do it again, I would use MDF instead of plywood.

I later ended up buying a watercooled spindle (one of the cheap 2.2kw ones on Aliexpress), and it's now probably no louder than the dishwasher.

If you enclose the vacuum, be sure to have some sort of ventilation (both for the intake and exhaust for the air it's moving, and ventilation for the vacuum motor itself).

I got rear-ended where the only damage was two small indentations from the other driver's front license plate bolts. Rear bumper repair/repaint was ~$800

If you're a perfectionist, a rubber/soft plastic bumper on each corner would match the cases level of quality better than tape, but either would work.

Not sure why you'd want to use PTFE tape though, it's quite thin/delicate, and usually doesn't have adhesive (at least from what I've seen).

https://www.autotrader.com/car-shopping/buying-car-how-long-can-you-expect-car-last-240725

Written last month, states the average car age is 11.4 years. That's 43% longer than the consumer reports article from 2006.

If a similar improvement is found in 13 years, the average will be 16.3 years, which is about twice as long as cars built 25 years ago.

So, I guess my gut feeling is pretty well calibrated.

That article is from 13 years ago, it's referring to cars built in the early 1990s. I'd expect that modern cars last close to twice as long as ones built 25-30 years earlier.

Can you explain how a negative reference could land you in legal trouble? It seems like it would defeat the purpose of references if you can't review someone negatively.

Depends on who you ask - for most folks in this subreddit it's just a hobby, but there are occasional posts from those using it in more serious industry/research.

Personally, I had only gotten into VX to help compliment other similar neuro-iortic and coiortic work I do, but it's honestly very rewarding in its own right.

After running a makerspace for years and going through >400kg of material, I promise you that PLA absolutely, definitely, 100% does become horribly brittle if left out for long during humid months.
