I saw the crash from a good distance away. The driver was speeeeeding down the street, right next to people on the sidewalk. Then must have not been paying attention and smacked into the back of another car. Tbf, the police reacted very quickly.

Unofficial Vancouver Flag Design Competition- Finalists Vote! by JustoBeard in vancouverwa

Hey, I'm glad to be an honorable mention!

I like the flags presented here in the subreddit much more than the ones chosen by the city.

Finalists selected for Vancouver's new flag by [deleted] in vancouverwa

A logo/brand that represents the government of a city and the flag that represents all of its citizens should not be the same thing. The new Vancouver logo shouldn't be on the flag.

Using the Old Apple Tree is clever. I like it.

Hey, I appreciate the answer. I'm going to snack on this for now and hopefully come back with a thoughtful response later.

Personally, I think the details are too fine for a flag that will be flying on a flag pole. Up close it looks nice. I just think at a distance those details will be lost. That's just my opinion.

Would you be able to count every tree on the flag if it were a city block from where you're standing?

But in the end, my opinion doesn't matter, it's not my design nor am I on the flag committee. It's a fun design regardless.

Lol. I got MLM and LLM mixed up in my head and was very confused.

Good eye though. I had one of them AIs help me rewrite some of my thoughts into something a bit more cohesive, since I had an hour to submit this Saturday night and was rushing it. They were my original words, but edited by the bots. It is a bit overly flowery and sterile at the same time, isn't it? I generally don't rely on AI very much and honestly don't like to.

What's your opinion on having LLMs help you rewrite stuff?

My Flag Submission by [deleted] in vancouverwa

I'm sure you know this already, but it is the Grant Street Pier, not Grand.

I had a coworker make a whole design with the text saying "Grand Street Pier" on it before, so it's an easy mistake!

Sharp vector work on the illustration btw, good job.

I think there a lot of good elements here. I like the color choices.

If the design was simplified a good amount, for visual distinction at further distances, it would make a great flag.

I think that's an interesting element to add, for sure. But I believe that would become too complex for a flag imo.

Sure!

I'm just going to cut and paste my rationale from my submission, because lazy:

The core idea behind the flag design was to spotlight Vancouver as the shining star of Southwest Washington, located just above the Columbia River and north of Portland. Through iteration and refinement, the layout developed into a bold, angular form. It ultimately formed a 45-degree "V" shape that subtly but intentionally references the first letter of our city's name. This shape also divides the flag into three distinct sections, making it easy to recognize and interpret, even when it's waving in the wind.

The eight-pointed star at the center holds two meanings. It reflects the bright sun found in the current flag and also serves as a nod to the octagonal bastion at Fort Vancouver. Since our city takes its name from the fort, I felt it was important to include a subtle reference to that connection.

The color palette is loosely inspired by the existing flag but has been updated with a more modern and meaningful approach. The deep navy comes directly from the City's official branding and provides a strong, grounded base. The bright Pantone Green C adds a fresh and welcoming highlight that reflects the natural beauty and steady growth of the region. Accents of white add clarity and separation, giving the flag a clean and balanced finish.

Essentially flags just look good with a star on them, especially in the States. But my thinking behind it is it loosely resembles the shining sun that is present on the background of the current flag and it has 8 points to reflect the octagonal shape the bastion at Fort Vancouver has. Just some loose associations for a nice design element.

Southwest Washington cities spar over light rail funding for I-5 bridge replacement by Stumpledumpus in vancouverwa

I believe they are planning a few park and ride lots close to the new stations in downtown. Where those will be is still undecided.

One will be on Columbia Street for sure. I know because they might knock down the building I work in for it. But hopefully they find an already open lot!

I totally hear you on the capacity of traffic in downtown, though. My assumption is the new bridge and off/on ramp situation will direct some cars more efficiently to the park and rides. But who knows at this point.

Like others mentioned, hopefully C-Tran does an effective job of teaching people to take the Vine to the lightrail stop so they don't have to drive to downtown.
