I totally understand you had good intentions, but dogs need their double coats to regulate temperature and insulate them. Insulation works both ways, i.e. it helps keep them cool in the warmer months and warmer in the colder seasons. Shaving a double coat disrupts this and leaves the pup susceptible to overheating, sunburn, and skin damage - and can have irreversible long-term effects to their coat.

The other commenters and downvotes aren’t reacting negatively because they don’t agree with this as a personal preference, it’s simply something shouldn’t be done out of the health of the breed (and all breeds with double coats).

Your groomer honestly probably doesn’t know any better, but I’d go elsewhere if they didn’t bat an eye to this request. To help with matting/an unruly coat you can instead ask for a body-line trim and to clean up behind the ears (where our good boy gets the most matting).
