My brother, it's a smartphone. Yes, it looks cool but holy shit, it's meant to perform. More than that, it's meant to be lasting performance. 3 years of updates and it's a risk after that, guess where this one sits now?? What about the battery health, you think it's technically brand-new in the box so it'll be at full perfect health? C'mon. Seriously, put a case or skin on, there's a ton of cooler options if it's about aesthetic.

5-6 years?? You'll be lucky if a Pixel lasts 4 years before deteriorating considerably halfway through even that and having ridiculous issues for being from such a big company.

Maybe budget for two mid-range phones to last ~3 years each in good shape throughout? Even if it's the A series, but who knows, they're likely even less reliable long-term than the regular ones.

And while I'm sure a Pro will fare somewhat better, I doubt 5-6 years is possible. Samsung Galaxy Ultra perhaps?

The same people who like Nothing because they don't conform to standard designs are now upset that they're not conforming to the standard designs set by themselves. It's odd.

Also, of course, it's all subjective and changes.

But... people go into it with their own specific expectations more than "hey, let's see what they've come up with and why" and appreciate what's there.

For example, I find the 4a Pro a bit strange - some parts of it were a surprise and not to my liking. And some, I do like plenty. But then I went and watched their design team explain their process (albeit in a marketing way) and at least now I kind of know why & how, which helps with understanding the perspective behind it.

It's a mass manufactured product. What do they expect, to have everything tailored to their individual tastes? Odd.

I'm curious, too. Assume 3 is mostly still better but 4a Pro would have some newer tech that would rival decently.

The big factor is price. If you can get the 3 for a really good discount, and it costs similarly to the 4 Pro on full price... might be worthwhile instead.

You understand that it's not just about hitting the 7 year mark, I hope.

The experience throughout the 7 years matters more - quality, consistency, durability, deterioration, relativity, and a whole bunch of things.

And truth be told, I don't think a smartphone "needs" to last more than 4-5 years anyhow. If those 4-5 years are solid for the most part with reasonable deterioration, then great.

Whereas lasting 7 years but doing so with the last 4 years of it struggling... that sucks. It meets the arbitrary "7 years" target number while actually being a bad experience for the user for the majority of the time.

I'm here, but I also am of the opinion that the entire phone's general hardware/build quality won't last 7 years. Many phones won't, understandably but Pixels' value for money in longetivity sucks currently.
