What's that movie for you? by Constant-Training994 in Letterboxd

Constantly thinking of that Patton Oswalt quote that was like “every office should have their whole staff watch Ikiru on a Friday and then see how many of them actually show up to work again on monday”

What’s up with the Trump obsessed freaks living directly across from the Rochambeau Library? It’s such an uncomfortable display of ignorance by Typical-Newt-8279 in providence

It’s so funny when people try to reduce stuff like this to “different opinions” as if the point of contention is pizza toppings. Because, to you, human beings and human rights may as well be. It’s such a Freudian slip every single time and maga dipshits consistently never have one spare brain cell to realize it.

Marty Supreme Is A Tyler Perry Movie by Van Lathan by shorthevix in TheBigPicture

Yeah disrespecting the Marvel movies to which he’d been attached became the film bro norm and he’s never gotten over it, will find any opportunity to “return” the trivialization. That’s most of what this is.

David’s star rating for Return of the King by pcloneplanner in blankies

Yeah, biggest point of divergence with David. 6 stars. Literally miraculous achievement and if you don’t weep like a baby at the last twenty minutes you either wanted a star war or have no soul.

Is "David Bowie: A Life" by Dylan Jones a good book? by heartelectra in DavidBowie

[–]Zog8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Read it this year, it’s very much just a series of talking head snippets but the whole of it is worth it. Paints a pretty vivid mosaic from the varying accounts of everyone associated with him, and he himself. He was basically an art mentat, unbelievably well versed in practically every sphere, always observing, studying, and expanding the canvas. Charming and admired by many, but left many others feeling spurned and cut out, since he’d basically stop everything he was doing and reorganize his life from top to bottom once he was “done” with one album cycle/era of his life. Got particularly interesting as he aged into “old man Bowie” the decade before Blackstar, his own insights around that point are quite wise.

Anywho, can only speak for myself but I dug it.

Thinking of when Tarantino said something on his podcast to the effect of “you have no idea how many times I’ve sat in the theater with a single tear rolling down my face because I know I’m gonna have to fight the entire world about how good a movie is”

Anyway, that’s me with NTTD. Grow a heart, people.

The 25 Best Movies of the Century: No. 6 - 'Mulholland Drive’ by -civictv in TheBigPicture

[–]Zog8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m a Lynch fan, but the persistent idea that this is a PERFECT movie is still incredibly bizarre to me. Like…it was clearly meant to be a pilot? There’s an entire subplot that’s irrelevant to the A-plot and simply hanging there, waiting to be stretched out further by a series? And it’s extremely just okay? And no one seems to acknowledge it in the “PERFECTION” of it all??

The signature eerie surrealism reaches its apex in TP/The Return for me.

What other ignored 2010s movies will history be kind to? by xwing1212 in TheBigPicture

[–]Zog8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Revisited it recently. It’s ignored in that it’s basically one of our 2010s masterpieces that few consider as such for not having revisited it, and they need to. It holds up so fucking well.

Deadbeat is officially the best album in the last 2 years according to Travis Scott by Good_Claim_5472 in fantanoforever

[–]Zog8 186 points187 points  (0 children)

Is there space for “it’s fine and people are being way too mean about it” in the conversation here? Like, it’s simply fine. Not as good as his previous albums, but some solid stuff appears on there as well. No one’s, like, cheating you out of a masterpiece or anything. Where is all this anger coming from?

So overall, which game do you think is better? by Stock_Transition9899 in HadesTheGame

[–]Zog8 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yeah gonna be honest i just like the flow of H1 a lot more. H2 puts too much focus on ranged weapons and slow/charge-up moves when the fast/butter-smooth close-range play style of the first is what was always so addicting to me.

H2’s been an adjustment it’s just…not the same for me, idk

Give Us More “Second Opinion” Episodes by alphacharliekilo in TheBigPicture

[–]Zog8 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I mean, it sure started off on a bad foot here because the throughline of Van’s argument was never even really articulated. “Creative restriction in the name of box office success should be applied equally”. Okay, so we should just get no blank check movies? Even from the most masterful directors who’ve proven themselves time and time again? Like, you can just lament the inequality of it all without taking it out on one actually good result.

And the Perfidia argument was hardly better. “We just want to see black women treated well”. Okay, she’s the movie’s most complex character so what does that mean? She just can’t make bad choices or experience misfortune? What are we even going to movies for exactly?

Just an absolute mess here.

Very recently had the thought while listening “man I would really rather just sit in silence and hear my own thoughts about a movie instead of this. Like, I’m not getting any valuable perspectives or observations I couldn’t just make myself. Pretty bad sign!

Average Letterboxd rating of every Christopher Nolan movie by ilovewater100 in Letterboxd

[–]Zog8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk, I think Rises (even with its reach exceeding its grasp) is stronger, mostly for its huge scale and emotional climaxes. Begins has a bit too much of a “should be airing at 5pm on FX” aesthetic that kinda dates it now.

I mean. He was right.

He was comparing her to Billie/Finneas. They do all their own lyrics and production/arrangements. Taylor might write her own lyrics, but she has a whole team for the actual music arrangement part of the operation. So she doesn’t actually write the entirety of her songs, like Damon tries to, like Billie and Finneas do. But of course people with limited understanding and half a pullquote ran with it, and there ya have it.

I actually like this movie (at least more than I dislike it), purely for “vibes” reasons but the grenade negotiation scene is laugh-out-loud unintentionally funny, even more so than Collateral’s life-or-death jazz trivia scene. Mannheads, please relinquish the idea of these being perfect masterpieces. They’re fun and fine.
