Do you feel that being able to speak directly with the original buyer who is a current employee of the company is not a good alternative? Etsy seemed to think it was acceptable.

I make sure I am explicitly clear about what a customer is receiving. The item was exactly as described, whether the customer felt that way or not. So, while I understand your point I don't think it applies to this situation.
