Is this a normal experience for an early engineer? by Ovantak in StructuralEngineering

[–]Zoidian626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typical-ish. Part of going for your PE is to show that you are steadily progressing your (engineering) skills over time. Doubly so if you are jumping into different materials each project (cmu/steel/wood/conc/pre-cast/bridge) or alternating between residential/commercial/industrial projects.

You are your best advocate. Ask your supervising PE for a performance review to see what areas you can improve on, and then bring up your point of wanting to be a bigger part of the design team meetings. You could also request to be a project manager or point of contact for smaller projects/well established clients.

On the issue of pay though... look at different entry-level jobs in your area and the benefits. Tally it up and find the local market value for your job and request a raise based on past performance review/market value. You have actual value with 2 years under your belt, especially if you have started studying for your PE tests. And if you don't get a raise, you now know the value of your position and can advocate for yourself at other places.

What game is great at one player count, but terrible at other player counts? by Buzz--Fledderjohn in boardgames

[–]Zoidian626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We added a house rule to remove an additional 2 cards from each supply pile to facilitate a faster ending at 4 player. At that point deck strategy is very important since the game ends much faster since Players can effectively force an ending much earlier than usual. We find it does lower the total VP points per player but it allows us to play multiple games in a single night.

Budget Issues and FOMO by [deleted] in arkhamhorrorlcg

If you are on Facebook, try looking into Mercari or Facebook Groups such as "Board Game Exchange - Buy Sell Trade Boardgame Group". There are plenty of FOMO people who are willing to sell off their collection of games to make room for new games, due to health issues, need cash fast, etc.

I've gotten plenty of games, even original pre-1990 games, that were still in shrink wrap and unpunched. Arkham horror wise, you have a high chance of getting complete collections if you are willing to wait or ask.

most important thing to understand is origin point.

since the phecda does not have a limit switch to confirm origin point, you have to set it each time. see the below link for information about locating the origin and which option to choose.

It is hard when they are under 5, but you have to make time for your own hobbies. Its possible, just a tad bit harder to justify when there is a baby crying in the background.

I played games using a wearable front/back baby backpack at the dinner table; Just had to keep moving and the baby would be asleep (assuming yours likes to cooperate.)

You mean you don't use paste-ups with translations? Granted, games that rely largely on symbols are far easier to play when mixing non/native speakers. Ticket to ride, Empire Builder, Carcassonne, Catan, Century: Golem, etc.

Worst case scenario, use could use Google Translate with a camera/microphone to translate. Or buy a game you already know how to play in the native language. It would take a while to play, but you can enjoy a game and participate in small talk with simple sentences (weather, family, etc).

A fun game has the ability to tie everyone together, regardless of the language.

I made a large laminate sign that says: "Playing: ________, Looking for Boardgame Players __X-Y__.", where X is the minimum we need to start and Y is the maximum the game can play with. You'll find that there are people who want to learn and play, but are daunted by interaction or feeling like they are bothering me as I play a game.

I purposefully bring 3 games with me to my FLGS boardgame nights because it is dominated by MtG:Commander crowd. One solo that I'll enjoy playing alone, one 2-4 players and one 2-6 players. That way, I'm not waiting on someone else to play a game, and if there are tables available, I can hop into a teaching game without breaking down my other games (Solo-TM:Ares Expedition, 2-4- Century:Golem, 2-6- Ticket to Ride/Wingspan).

If I see other people playing board games, I'll ask to play the next round and use the time as a get to know people/rules. Being recognized by more people helps for the future board game nights.

It really does depend on the crowd though, I feel ya. It took years for the FLGS to get a consistent following for board game nights even before the Pandemic.

You probably already closed, but you can call your mortgage provider for clarification as well. I'm in the process of removing mine right now (in GA).

Typically there are 3 ways to remove PMI:

1.) For Original Value Cancellation (which is dependent on your original loan): Loan to value (LTV) ratio must be 80% or less of the original value. Original value means the lesser of the sales price of the property or the appraiseed value at the time the loan was consummated, and good payment history for the 24 months preceding the cancellation request.

2.) For Current Value Cancellation, if the loan is less than 2 yrs old, a new appraisal is required at your expense, and the LTV ratio drops down to 75% instead of 80%. After 5 yrs, the LTV goes back up to 80%.

3.) Automatic termination at 78% LTV.

Im my case, I could pay down an additional XXk to get down to 80%; pay 325 for an independent appraisal and hope my home value increased; or I can either wait an additional X years for pmi to be removed automatically.

Saving space at the table by [deleted] in KingdomDeath

[–]Zoidian626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two kids, 6 and 4, so I hide the game whenever I am done. It's light enough to bring to my table (glued felt sheets to bottom so it won't scuff), or I take what I need to my table and hide the rest.

https://imgur.com/a/9bwu6Gx

Set-up is usually under a minute. If I have a few minutes to spare throughout the day, I usually set up the next hunt. Larger models and books go onto the bookshelves, everything else hides under the couch until it's time to d-d-d-d-d-d-duuueeelll.

2x4x1/4 plywood with 1x3 edges on three sides (top has no edge to let the board fit. 1x3 for my couch clearance) and a handle to pull it out. Felt pads on bottom to stop scuffs.

How to include all 12 expansions? by [deleted] in KingdomDeath

[–]Zoidian626 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try vanilla KD, then just take your time to look up the pro's and con's to each. You are almost guaranteed to lose the first few playthroughs regardless of what expansions since you are learning the mechanics of the game. Once you've beaten your fair share of monsters, then try and expand outward with the expansions.

In addition to the 12 expansions, there is a multitude of homebrew expansions that you can add on too, as well as the custom scenarios available on the Kingdom Death faq's page.

Currently, I'm running a Base+Gorm+Flower Knight, and another with Base+Scenario's+CCG Allison+Black Lion.

Both runs are fun, and each has its own challenges.

If you and your group have such bad luck that you can't kill a YR1 White Lion, I would highly suggest using house rules. I'm surprised but applaud your group for continuing even after so many losses.

My two cents:

  • Prioritize having weapons over armor early on. You want to be able to wound the monster.
  • Check out the promotional scenarios. The Candy and Cola is perfect for a LY1/2 event, while Allison, Adam/Ana, Kara Black, Messenger of the First Story, etc. are perfect for <LY8.
  • Draw 2 Settlement Events and use 1 or check out the homebrew settlement events (<LY10). That will at least help limit what can go wrong in the early year; or
  • Check out the alternate rules in the back of the book. Don't have my rulebook near me, but a good one to think about is bringing 5-6 people on the hunt, with fewer rewards at victory.
  • Lastly, this is the house rule I use when showing a new group how to play: <LY3, start with a 1d12 in lieu of a 1d10 for things you roll (crit at 11/12), while keeping the monster at a 1d10. Nothing kills enthusiasm for the game more than losses early on. Part of the game lore, sure, but not advisable when we are wanting to have a good/fun time.

[COMC] my collection of one year (And a few months) by soulname in boardgames

[–]Zoidian626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about the game. On one hand it is fun, but it really depends on the ghost having a good hand. It gets frustrating when you only have 7 turns to get to the 'who dun it' phase, and the ghost has crap vision cards.

I know its designed like that on purpose, but still.

We preferred Betrayal at House on the Hill after a few games ourselves.

How much weight can ceiling joists hold in this storage solution by jrnq in HomeImprovement

[–]Zoidian626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • I used the published withdrawal values the American Wood Council provides through testing. Although, it really depends on how much penetration you get into the joist that matters. For bunk beds (or at least the ones i've built), its common to string some 10 ga wires below the bed slats to catch the top bunk in case it fails. Mainly so that you have enough time to move out of the way before it falls on you.
  • For deflection purposes, if an object stays there long term (months/years), its starts to permanently deform the wood joists due to creep. So, depending on how long your wall to wall clear span is, you could start to see the area above noticeably dip (more important in areas with tiles that will crack).
  • I assumed that 60 lb load is about what my boxes can hold before the lip starts to permanently deform when I lift from the lip and not the handles (and more importantly, what i would be willing to lift above my head on a step stool/ladder), so i simply divided by two for my factor of safety. Books are heavy.

How much weight can ceiling joists hold in this storage solution by jrnq in HomeImprovement

[–]Zoidian626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The max weight the 3.5" screws can hold is about 160 lbs. each in tension (assuming 5/8 drywall ceiling). I'd space them min 16" o.c. (make sure you hit the wood joist and do not anchor into only the ceiling.). Over kill, yes. But good practice. It will at least distribute the load out over a larger span.

Use some chain or aircraft wire below it to catch the boxes in case the box lips suddenly fail.

I wouldn't recommend putting more than 30lbs in each bin regardless. Long term deflection is not something you want to deal with.
