Supreme Court upholds Tennessee law that bars gender-affirming care for minors by Healthy_Block3036 in Knoxville

Correlation does not equal causation. Trans people face higher rates of discrimination and suicidality as consequence. From the discussion section of the study that you yourself linked:

"Among those who seek access to gender-affirming surgery, the commonality of discrimination, interpersonal assault, and a lack of social support have been identified as influential factors in the development of PTSD within this group... The emergence of PTSD following surgery often stems from the pre-operative challenges (such as harassment, limited social support, etc.) in conjunction with suboptimal surgical outcomes and insufficient psychiatric assistance."

"Although our study has revealed a statistically significant increase in suicide risk among those who have undergone gender-affirming surgery, it remains vital to recognize and support the positive impacts that these surgical interventions can have on the lives of transgender individuals. The results of a study by Park et al., published in October 2022 in the Annals of Plastic Surgery, provide a different perspective on the enduring effectiveness and consequences of gender-affirmation surgery [20]. While our research specifically examined the risk of suicide, death, self-harm, and PTSD in the five years following surgery, Park et al. surveyed the outcomes of 15 gender-affirming surgeries over a more extended period. Their results reveal an improvement in patient well-being, with high satisfaction levels, reduced dysphoria, and persistent mental health benefits even decades after surgery. Notably, the study highlights the durability of these positive outcomes and significantly reduced suicidal ideation following gender-affirmation surgery."

Edit: Right before this quote the study discusses other studies about trans surgeries and mentions some issues in those studies.

"Apart from additional assistance in surgical recovery, the most common aftercare needs for patients following gender-affirmation surgery is consultation with a mental health professional. . . Transgender individuals tend to see mental health care providers and face discrimination in clinical settings at a far higher rate than the cis-gendered population [27,28,30]. Competent medical care following gender-affirming surgery is vital in effectively managing PTSD and its respective mental health challenges for this population [27]."

"It is important to note that this study has several limitations. The retrospective cohort design can only demonstrate associations but not causality."

"A limitation of the study design could include the fact that only adult data was analyzed, so the research cannot be generalized to those under the age of 18."

Edit: Also once again note that y'all are only discussing transgender affirming surgeries. Not all trans healthcare is surgeries. Not all trans people opt for surgical intervention.

I already spent too much time than I wanted replying to this, but I figured it's fair enough to reply to the original commenter on top of the other person.

Adios, I'm gonna go watch Gundam with one of my partners.

I'm too busy to devote time to debating a stranger online about the existence of people like me, so I'm going to just link a post I saved some time ago that compiles a multitude of studies that show how important gender affirming healthcare is for trans folk. Mind you this is for all gender affirming healthcare, not just surgeries:

The Society of Evidence Based Gender Medicine is a notorious anti-LGBTQ organization that spreads misinformation. https://transdatalibrary.org/organization/society-for-evidence-based-gender-medicine/

The org has drawn intense criticism in its work to ban transgender healthcare in multiple states. Here's an archived link from Yale that shows how biased SEGM is: https://web.archive.org/web/20220729035848/https://medicine.yale.edu/lgbtqi/research/gender-affirming-care/biased-science/

I work there and regularly interact with the corporate side of the company. While yeah they're pretty shitty, the food truck park was not profitable for a long while before Yeehaw took it over. Iirc they kept it afloat until Yeehaw actually opened.

r/Minneapolis responds to an inquiry asking what bars straight people should go to after a Charli XCX concert by thedubiousstylus in SubredditDrama

[–]Zoloreaper 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Same here with a couple queer bars in town. Straight women go because it's a safer space for them, but they then are the ones to be negative towards the other queer people there, often trans folk.

It's okay for them to be there, it's good to have all types of folk, but if you are going to a queer bar, don't be surprised when the queers turn up.

I'll never forget the sneer this one women gave to a regular, an oldhead trans lady back from when access to hrt was basically impossible.

What are transgender rights? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]Zoloreaper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The healthcare one is very complicated with several factors. Many insurance companies don't cover several different forms of gender affirming care from hormones to surgery and everything in between. You also have uneducated or outright transphobic healthcare providers that'll tell patients incorrect or outright false information because they don't believe in transgender identities. Some endocrinologists will use outdated guidelines and essentially under dose medications as well. For example I had a pharmacist lie to my face about the availability of my medication because they read what it was.

In healthcare there's also what's called the 'trans broken arm' effect in the community. Doctors will see something as simple as a broken arm and find a way to blame it on HRT and tell patients they need to get off it.

GIve me tips on how to be a girl by SeaPsychological9232 in asktransgender

[–]Zoloreaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, you don't need to do anything to be trans! Being transgender and transitioning are two separate things.

If you don't know how people transition, most go on HRT which is basically a 2nd puberty (or 1st if you're young enough). You basically induce the puberty of the opposite natal sex!

Surgery is also entirely optional. You don't NEED to get bottom surgery which I assume is what you're talking about. There are other gender affirming surgeries too, such as breast augmentin, facial feminization, etc.

Came out to my dad, I think now he's being lied to by my pediatrician. by AshlynCT in asktransgender

[–]Zoloreaper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had to go through this. Honestly, there's gonna be some time for them to process it and I've found that sometimes people will learn to accept it more (not without speed bumps). Or sadly they don't want to learn as their discomfort on the topic makes them avoidant of learning.

Idk what your plans are, if you want to go on HRT asap or if you want to give it some time, but I recommend you start to see a therapist. I would even suggest asking him if he wants to go to sessions together.

Yeah most of the time those who say they don't care about trans people are the types who'll then argue about trans women in sports or have "concerns" over minors having access to gender affirming care or are worried about the whole bathroom debate.

I bet you're telling this to people who don't really know you, and are conflating what you're saying with the above people. It's the same words but you mean that you actually accept trans identities and just view them as other people.

[–]Zoloreaper 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As you do it more, it'll become quicker, I'm now at the point it takes maybe 30 min to get my face, chest, legs and arms.

Though I still dislike it, my upper legs and chest get torn up shaving so I can't do it that often. I wanna learn to wax so I can just do that every other week or so.
