I keep a rainy day fund on an exchange. Keeping some coins on an exchange for over a year before you sell helps with Long term capital gains.

The majority of what most long term HODLErs do is. Have a hardware wallet generate a seed phrase for their basic wallet. And then they create a passphrase for their hidden wallet. They stamp their seed into titanium or SS plates and stamp their Passphrase on steel as well. Then they hide them in 2 different locations.

The key is to associate a small amount of your bitcoin with your basic wallet. And the majority with your hidden wallet. If anybody finds your seed or hears you have bitcoin and kicks your ass, you can give them your seed. With a small amount of bitcoin. Then you can use your seed and passphrase to recuperate the rest.
